Title: Gofoil 6.5 Pedestal and 14.5" Tail
Post by: 805StandUp on June 26, 2020, 02:27:42 PM
Ordered the GoFoil 6.5" Pedestal and 14.5" Tail and after one session, I am so jazzed on this combo!!!

The 14.5" Tail fills all the gaps I was looking for in a GoFoil tail--pumps like the 18N, tracks like the Maliko and carves closer to the Kai.  I was afraid that moving from the 9" to the 6.5" pedestal (GoFoil's equivalent to moving to a short fuselage) would be like learning to foil all over again but after a couple of waves to get used to it, I found that I was able to throw turns that I haven't been able to before without the added twitchiness I was expecting.  Had to adjust pump frequency and carve to stay up high on the foil but it is oh so fun... If anyone is considering this combination, to me it is a gamechanger!

What front wing is that?  GL180 or 140?  How much do you weigh?

I weigh ~182lbs.  GL180 on a 6'x28x115L Kalama E1.  Pretty much the only wing I use right now.  I thought of picking up a GL140 for the bigger winter swells here but then the shelter-in-place orders came so will have to look at the smaller NL next winter.

I haven't been happy with mine.  The tail required a bunch of modification to get it to sit straight since the holes were drilled crooked.  The pedestal itself is obviously handmade and wasn't really shaped to fit the tail so I think the angle isn't set right.  I tried a variety of washers and shims but gave up after since it never rode right.

sorry  to hear about your troubles jondrums...yes they are handmade maybe you just got a weird one...hopefully they'll make it right...the 6.5 was a total game change for me too...way better pumping  turning  carving everything....the 29.5 mast with the plate adapter GL180 and the 6.5 is THE hot setup.....for now....

I’m with Jondrums. Same issues with pedestal -  My experience with the new pedestal is not of “game changer” status. It’s definitely improved turning performance and I am grateful for the upgrade despite the issues. However, I love the 14.5 tail.

Wow--I guess I got lucky with my handmade one then!  Hopefully the production ones that come out in July fix the issues you have had... maybe Alex will swap the ones that you both got especially since the custom ones were sold at a premium cost?

If anyone could recommend the appropriate angle for the tail, that might be helpful.  Or perhaps a good photo from the side showing the angle of the tail.   I'd be psyched to give it another shot

Not sure if this will help but I tried to line up with a wall as guide though I do think the street angles slightly downward...

So how or where do you get your hands on a set of those (14.5 tail & pedestal)?

@jondrums - nice meeting you foiling today--was a surprise!

@sano - Word is that the production versions come out in July.  If you want it sooner, you may be able to get a handmade one directly from Maui (e.g. Gofoil or shops there)--you do pay a premium for the handmade one.  I will message you the shop I got it in case they still have inventory.

Hilarious that we crossed paths a day after you did me the favor to take a picture of your setup.  Thanks for doing that - I know it takes time but it is helpful to try and get a sense for the right angle.  See you out there tomorrow again I'm sure.

I got the PM, and thanks for the info. From what I'm reading, I think I might just wait for July to get the production version that hopefully has all of the kinks worked out of them, and there'll be a bit more consistency in what one's buying as far as the angle of the dangles go and all.

Actually, I'm really just a cheapskate, and if I can get a nickel off on something for waiting a couple weeks I'm taking it!  ;) ;D

Based on what I am reading here, a wise choice... and if it will save you $70+ even more so!
