Title: Super good day
Post by: PonoBill on May 26, 2020, 06:53:51 PM
There's good, and then there's today. Perfect wind--steady 20MPH with a few gusts maybe to 23. Nice rounded swells in mid-river to chase and ride. I started out on a 1020 wing with a 340 tail with my 6M F-one wing.  I loved it, but I was overfoiling fairly often. Lots of lift and not a lot of stabilizer. Admin and Chan quit after about a two-hour session. I wanted to try another wing so I went for the 1010. Holy shit that was great. I was a bit overpowered since the wind came up a few MPH, would have been great on the 5M. But I stayed out for another hour, maybe a bit more. I was pretty toasted when I came in, and I'm exhausted now, but it was so fun. The 1010/340 combo is fast and smooth. It takes a lot of pumping to get up, but once I'm up it doesn't come down. I got two 95% switchfoot jibes--I didn't fall, but the board came down when I didn't switch fast enough. I'm going to sleep like a baby tonight unless my shoulders wake me up. It's seven pm and I'm yawning.

That was me yesterday, except for the wing and foil part. We were a my sisters place on the beach. Sunny, waist high, and not to much wind chop (manageable). Only a few people out, tons of waves. I was out for about 4 hours. I could smell the prime rib on the BBQ. Sat there with my wetsuit pealed half down, with Chinese salad, potato salad, prime rib, drank Modelos and watched the sunset. I slept like a baby. You'll be a little sore tomorrow...... unless you go out again:)

Mine was good too.....5 yards of stone dust delivered at 8:00. I was moving gravel and dirt preparing to lay some pavers. I was a bit overpowered with a large shovel so i switched to a smaller spade. No wind in the morning and it was warm so i was sweating my ass off. Felt great when it got a little breezy and cooler in the afternoon.....my shoulders are killing me too ........:)

Glad you had a good one bro. I'm getting on the water tomorrow for some flat water cruising. Oh and the new machine came today, got it set up tonight and ran a test cut....looking good.

That was sweet!  It doesn't get any steadier than that.  72 degrees air.  Ahhh!  That makes the 53 degree water feel awesome.  The ripping current was putting up a super clean small swell. I was doing mini downwinders to the kite launch and coming back up upwind by going downwind a little less :).  I saw one of those jibes, Bill.  It looked great.

We did Blackened Steelhead sliders on the grill.  I had 4 of those and I don't remember walking to bed.

I went to bed early to read, I think I managed to turn my kindle on, but I woke up this morning with it under my face.

Sounds like your timing was better than mine guys, I went out too early and used too much energy trying to make the 3.6 work.  Surprisingly it did, just not confidence inspiring. The last hour or so (3:00-4) was really nice on the 5M though. Sadly I had pumped the 5 first but deflated it ::)

The grass at the event site is open now making for pretty luxurious launching. Looks like the parking might be open now too.
Too bad there'll be no wind for a few days...

Go big early. That feels like a mixed metaphor, but fat assed guys have been doing that since the early days of windsurfing, and it's what I've always done. You can always rig down if it's too much, but I've always found the likelihood of a rig change is much greater if you go too small than too big--you can live with being a bit overpowered, as I did yesterday and still have a great session--but you generally can't enjoy being underpowered.

That's not as true for skinny folks, I've also noticed that women windsurfers need to be spot on with their gear choices, and generally get very good at choosing what to use. It seems that guys are sloppier because they can get away with more. Nothing scientific there, just anecdotal.

We are going to get Wingable easterlies today and tomorrow.  It is 15-17 at Viento right now.  :)

It was a very good day!  I know that I'm progressing when I start to get techie.  I was on a 4.2 wing with a 400 stabilizer.  Randy was on a 5.0 and a 440.  He was perfect and I had too much.  It was still a great day, but for the first time in this sport, I found myself thinking I should go in and tweak my rig.  That usually means two things, I'm hooked and I'm learning.

Another magic one today.  Super high quality wind again.  20 to 23 for a while and then 15 to 20 for a long stretch.

Bill and I stopped by Viento but it had already dropped off too much there.  We flew my new drone and then I headed to Stevenson on a 14 to 17 reading.  iWindsurf is so killer.  By the time I got there it was steady 17.  I rigged 6.0 and my 1020 because of the strong current and lighter wind moving in the same direction.  That worked out really well.

I knew it was going to be an amazing session before I ever hit the water because luck seemed to be on my side.  My evidence:

1. Earlier at Viento I had set my drone to follow me mode and set it to track Bill who then got his evil grin on (his whole countenance changes, its really quite frightening) and scooted off through some very dense woods...and no crash.  So far so good.
2. I remembered to plug the strut on my 6.0 Swing before pumping.  That was the first and will likely be the last time for this.
3. I set my gear down on the beach and carefully attached my wing leash to my fuselage to keep the wing from blowing off.  Sadly, it wasn't the wing leash that I attached but rather the board leash.  So, despite full wind exposure my wing sits perfectly still while I am leisurely getting my suit on and then as I am walking over to it, it wanders gently up the grass to meet me.  Oooh!  This is going to be one hell of a session.  Needless to say, my board stayed right where I had left it because it had been so nicely anchored :).

The Swing 6.0 is such a versatile wing.  I easily could have been on a 5.0 but the 6.0 stays so mellow and solid.  With all that extra power I could point super high and did a few long upwind reaches and made up a lot of ground despite the strong current.  On one super powered reach I was heading straight upriver.  So cool.  My new Sky Wing 5'4 was really perfect in this condition.  I like that thing more every time I use it.  This was my first day trying big wing, small board, big foils and that combo works great.  What a great way to do self powered downwinders.  No shuttle, no hassle.

I stayed out for an hour and a half.  A kiter launched from the kite launch upwind about half way through and apologized for tainting my solo session.  Hah!  That guy was terrific to watch and had some major skills.

This was all on a no wind forecast.  Pretty sure most days are wingable here if we watch the sensors.  Tomorrow actually has good easterly wind in the forecast so that looks great as well.

My thoughts exactly.

At least we’re getting to see some before/after pictures and wind meter charts ::)

Also anxiously awaiting some GoPro 8 footage Mr D

I picked up the new Mavic Air 2.  What an incredible piece of kit.  I had posted about it here: https://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,35715.15.html .  This was its first flight over water.  I zipped it out across the Gorge and straight back and then used Bill as a test subject to see how the active track features work.  Once we got those settings right it worked really nicely.  Water below doesn't seem to bug it and it threaded through a very tangled no-path forest with zero assist from me.  I am ready to use it for shooting someone else using the active track feature.  I am not sure about going full autonomous for self shooting leaving the remote on shore.  I will probably get there in a perfect situation.  I would say that Bill could shoot video of me, but he has the attention span of a 5 year old with a short attention span.  He is just as likely to become distracted by the nearby plaque which details Lewis and Clark's canoe portage of the old falls as he is to stay flying the drone.  Chan said above that she is getting techie with her foil gear but mind you that she also came in and said, "my back flipper doesn't feel right".  She does stuff like that to torment me and Bill and more importantly to never be asked to do something like get stuck flying the drone.

I didn't shoot video of Bill bushwhacking at Viento.  I was really interested in the active track.  Active track uses the camera to follow the subject so if it follows well it can film well.  I filmed my grandson on the land around the house when this showed up and the video quality is really clean.  I am not worried about that part at all.  It is shocking how calmly this drone flies.  I had it out at my house in 30+ winds and extremely gusty.  It did fine.  I had a rebate so $730.00 and then I added the Fly more kit for extra batteries, props, etc.  How incredible is that?

Damn, that was a torture session. I knew I needed my 6m, especially since I still have the 1010/340 combo for foil, but I did the 5M for some stupid reason. Got up right away though, and drifted across the river like thistledown. Blew the jibe, as usual--didn't fall though, just came off the foil--and headed back. I got up after a bit of pumping and jumping, but the wind was suddenly lighter. I made it 3/4 of the way across, came down, and couldn't get back up. With all the screwing around and the heavy current I was downriver from the preferred landing, so I went back out to gain some upwind distance. I couldn't get up, and with the heavy current that meant I was even further downriver when I slogged back. So I waded back upriver, left my board on the beach, and went for the 6M.

The wind looked even lighter when I got back to the water, but I popped up right away and was able to make way upwind nicely against the brutal current as long as I stayed high on the foil. Blew the jibe (of course) and couldn't get back up. Fortunately, I was far enough upriver so that even slogging I came back to the launch. Unfortunately, I saw some whitecaps coming, popped up on the foil, and jibed to go back. Almost made the jibe on the foil, which was cool, but I came off the foil and couldn't get back up. I went to mid-river, jibed, slogged back, and got to do the wade of shame again.

Oh well, I got wet, had a couple on nice reaches, and got some excercise--mostly wading. Had a good salad and crappy burger at Lewis and Clark, sucked down some suds, and went home.

Definitely not one of the better East wind days but at least it was warm. Hot by the time I got home, what an odd feeling.

I had pumped the 5 back up after you went out but one of the paddlers came by and after several minutes discussion I deflated it again... momentum towards the water is important.

Pumped the 5 twice and the 3.6 once so got my share of exercise.

Maybe wind again Saturday.

Hah!  We said the same thing.  Why was that?  There was plenty of wind from 11:00 to 12:30 (4.2 and 2.8 for us) and some screaming reaches but I felt like I was flying upwind over chop the entire session.  Flow was at 400 while we were out.  I'm blaming that.  The upside is that this should be about the peak for current.

We may get light wingable westerlies this afternoon right at home.  They are calling 10-13 for Event site and Swell.   :)

Sitting outside at Lewis and Clark--the little restaurant near Bob's--I watched the wind pattern on the water, it was bizarrely narrow and focused on the Washington side a few yards offshore in a band perhaps fifty yards wide. There were whitecaps in the band and nothing on either side of it. The "whitecaps" looked a bit suspicious though, more like big current ripples that were getting their tops blown off than wind-generated whitecaps.

The day didn't do anything to improve my opinion of east wind in the gorge. I've had some great east wind days, but there's always something basically fucked. And I've had some horrible east wind days when I spent most of the time self-rescuing. Never going to be my favorite.

I also should have changed out the 1010 for the 1020. I have to get the 1010 above a fairly high critical speed to get it off the water and I couldn't do that in the marginal wind with the current cutting down on total lift. The 1020 gets up at a much lower speed but would be like riding a bronco.

Damn, that was awesome!  So nice to have the Event Site back on line.  Foiler's heaven yesterday with the sand spit completely blocking the current.  Trying to beat the heat (I don't get along with 90's), I got there early and rigged 6.0 for a crazy steady and sweet solo session.  Lots of Kite foilers and windfoilers joined in towards the end.  Bill came when I was derigging and I passed him the baton.  From the looks of the charts it stayed equally as steady but just got better as the day went on.  What a treat.

Looks like a bomb is going to drop today.  Forecast is for thunderstorms here and 40 to 50 out east with gusts over 60 knots.  May be a rest-up day because it is looking great starting Sunday.

Here's the quote from iWindsurf:

By the mid and late afternoon, gradients from Portland to The Dalles will exceed 0.30". When you combine the mighty WSW gradient that sets up in the afternoon with highly unusual atmospheric instability and intense wind shear aloft, what you get is a sudden, violent blast of nuking WSW winds for the Eastern Gorge but also a life-threatening risk of severe thunderstorms that could produce large hail and wind gusts in excess of 60 kt.

Well, that was crazy. I went out on my 920/340 foil and 3.5 M f-one. Heading out on the first reach everything felt great. Crazy wind, the gusts were extreme and the strongest gusts came with a lot of south in them while the more steady stuff had a lot of north. The wing was getting yanked all over the place but there was enough power so I could just feather it over my head and run upwind moving super fast. I wasn't having much trouble with the foil, it felt really locked in even pushing it faster than it really wants to go, but the swells were big and they were ripping apart on the top, so there was a fair amount of up and down just running over them.

I could see the big gusts coming--they tore the swells apart into spray which hit me like a fire hose a few times. I tried to jibe, almost made it--that little wing feels like a toy--but I fell switching feet. Got up and headed back and I couldn't stand up. I've got a habit of getting up switchfoot and swapping as I stand on a starboard tack, but this time when I tried to switch the wind and swell just blew me off the board. I tried to come up regular foot but when I got my front foot swung up onto the board it would round up a little and toss me off. Tried both ways about ten times and finally ran across the river on my knees with the board coming up on foil several times, which was kind of fun.

My fake boom was coming undone. The Velcro I've been using has died so I've been wrapping the whole shebang with some line. In all the thrashing that came undone and was flopping around, attached only to the front handle. Like I needed something else going on.

I came in and re-tied the boom and headed out again. As I did the wind suddenly jumped another ten kts or so and the two windsurfers got blown flat in the water. There were three kiters out, the two windsurfers, and up at the hook I could see a couple of sailfoilers. The sailfoilers disappeared while I was struggling to get to my feet with spindrift hitting my face in a steady spray. Finally got up and ran back out. I didn't want to go all the way across, I could see that the combination of current (350,000 CFS) and wind was making epic swells. If it had been smooth and steady that would have been a blast, but with my wing flipping around like a hooked fish it just didn't look inviting. Tried to jibe just before the current hit, got blown off the board on the downwind turn (faceplant without overfoiling) and had the same problem getting back up even though I'd given myself a good talking to about it being all in my head. This time I got up on the foil on my knees and made it almost all the way back to the event center.

I did one more reach, which went really well, had the same problem, knee foiled all the way back. As I was approaching the event center I had a kiter on one side of me who was sitting on his strapless directional board zooming in, and on the other side a kiter sitting on a foilboard, flying it effortlessly. People in the event center were congratulatory about the knee-wingfoiling, which I thought was kind of weird given that they were ignoring the kiters who looked like they were doing it on purpose. I assumed I just looked like I didn't have much choice (I didn't), but whatever. I decided to give it up and get some stuff done since it was more work than fun.

I windsurf says it was 17 gusting to 41 when I started and popped up to 25 gusting to 45 on my last reach. I think later in the season I'd think that was no big deal, but I'm used to gentle zephyrs right now, so I need to harden the fuck up a bit.

I'll take a look later to see if it calmed down a bit, or at least is blowing just in one direction. I love using that little wing and I'm sure it's going to get some good use this year.

This was in the central Gorge and it looks nuts but out East it was blasting and there were hurricane force gusts at over 75 when this peaked out there.

Here are some great ones of Mark:

TJ's wife got some great shots too. So you're saying we should have gone east, eh?

Looks like 5 days of Normal Nuts coming up.  25-35 and much less gusty.  That sounds dee-lightful.

Was getting everything ready to try my first winging Viento run yesterday morning on the 3.6 but at the last minute chickened out.
Had a fairly nice :o run on the surfski instead, so glad I didn't try it. Wouldn't even try it on the sup with this current

We saw a supfoil board sitting along the railroad tracks on the shuttle back to Viento. That coulda been a really unpleasant walk back for me as I always go barefoot.

Looking forward to the next week ;D

Dan got some fantastic photos.

Those are some of the best Gorge actions shots I've ever seen!

Yeah, it's a river. No, this doesn't happen every day, but it happens a lot.

Great shots.

Did the guy get run over by the barge?

I wonder how often that happens?  I do recall staying well clear when they were coming down river.

I don't think so, I know it looked bad but I assume it was telephoto foreshortening.

I've been in that position once, many moons ago. I was distracted and didn't see the barge coming (surprise, surprise) until the sudden block to the wind made me fall. I looked back and saw nothing but barge. I tried to water start but the barge was blocking the wind very effectively. Just before I abandoned my gear and swam for it I got a little shot of wind that gave me 3/4ths of a water start and pushed me out of the way. I got to watch the barge go by up close and personal while a deck hand trotted along the length of it and called me a dickhead over and over. I think he might have been more scared than I was, though I was pretty much at the saturation level for scared shitless.

I still sometimes realize I haven't looked for barges. They are really not all that sneaky, there's no excuse for not spotting them other than being an idiot.

Have some old video somewhere of a winsurf rig being run over at Celilo while the guy swims out of the way. Also of him getting a ticket in the parking lot for obstructing commercial traffic. The barge came to a stop and actually backed up, then continued on and looked like it ran over it a second time.

First Wingsurf Viento run yesterday! Solid 3.6 7/8 of the way until Wells Island and rolling in the usual spots. So much fun I didn't even care that I had to paddle the last 150 yards to get in (how can it go from 25+ to 0-5 in half a mile  :o )

Looked like a classic setup but apparently too Southwesterly to fill in East of Wells late in the day.

The guy in red jersey is my longtime friend Bob. He winters at Alta, Ut. and summers in the gorge. Rough life. He just took up winging.

Wow, it usually takes them a long way to stop.

Back in the 80's or early 90's there were two windsurfers that went missing a year or so apart. Everyone assumed they got blendered by the tug behind the barge.
