Title: Don't even think about it.
Post by: southwesterly on April 09, 2020, 12:04:10 PM
The surf in Santa Cruz is closed.

Stay home and don't even think about it.

Love seeing empty perfection!
Reminds me of surfing in the 60's  :)

I also enjoy seeing empty lineups.

Tyranny not so much.

When I was in my twenties I had this shirt (see attached photo), I don't even sup surf anymore and I have responsibilities this week.  If I didn't I might dig up that old shirt, dust off my SUS board and paddle out at the Lane.  I mean shoot it's usually way to crowded to take off at the peak on a south swell with a sup, and during paddlefest there usually isn't any south swell, might be a once in a lifetime opportunity - totally worth a $1000.

Surfline has this piece about beach closures, I didn't bother reading because I am certain I disagree with it.  The comments at the bottom I am loving, so glad to see that surfers still think for themselves and don't believe the official line:

Seems like a win-win situation to me.

$1200 hundred dollar stimulus check and a thousand dollar fine.

So you're telling me, I get to surf an empty line up and clear 200 bucks?

Sign me up.

Amen.

My skin is crawls with every decrease in freedom willfully swallowed (nay rejoiced) by our society.

Local surfers in Hawaii are having the best spring in years - No tourists! Check the web cams and see. At least HI determined that you can social distance in the ocean and they closed down parking to suit.

4 feet at 11 sec in one of my spots on Sunday. Primo swell direction. Netflix is non-essential for me, paddling out is.

Will report back.

That is really a beautiful photo Southwesterly!

What makes that photo even better is that it void of surfers.

Something you just don't ever see nowadays.

Ozone team rider said MEX police were confiscating boards about 5mi from them...  I asked where-there-was.

Checking back in. The swell hit as predicted, but Sunday also happened to be Easter and April 12 which is my wife and daughter's shared birthday. So "Don't even think about it" was in full force not by the authorities, but the real authorities.

However, one of my friends is a sheriffs deputy in the beach area and his birthday is April 12 too. I sent him a bday message and asked if I would get ticketed, and he gave me tips on what local LE was doing at the beaches. Locals are having a blast, just like in Hawaii, it is all about access.

Yeah, we can still surf on Maui, but nobody is working or going to school, so what else is there to do, but surf. With all you friends and their friends. We are having a good spring at least, but nobody is making money or buying boards so business is slow.

Same here locally. The surf industry is pretty much stopped. I just talked to a good friend who sands for a bunch of local board builders. He hasn't worked for about a month now. This time of year he's usually working 7 days a week if he wants. The surf industry is pretty fragile as it is. It's not going to be good for surf shops or anyone who works in the surf industry, restaurants, bars, barbers, dentists, etc, etc.
Hopefully the next good financial set is not too far away. This lull sucks.

Doheny was packed this morning. Probably 200 + surfers out. Looked like a busy weekend....

Parking is closed, but you can cycle in or get dropped off. I was tempted. Still am??? Just want to get wet!

Malibu first point has 5 people out at first light this morning. I would imagine that we will have "exponential growth" of surfers in the water there over the next week. They cleared out by 7A, but my guess is they will try to push the boundaries.

Keeping people out of the water is hard and it appears to be more embarrassing for the police than the surfer.

http://goodtimes.sc/santa-cruz-news/coronavirus/what-comes-after-shelter-in-place-for-santa-cruz/

A friend drove up the coast to SC county line during the ban hoping to find a spot to sneak in, he reported he saw cops posted at every beach enforcing the ban.

I have been supporting restaurants and shops doing curb side take out when I can, they say they're in survival mode and really appreciate any and all patronage.

I just read yesterday SCruz county beaches and parks will re-open. No school, no work and surfing OK, kids in SC are stoked!

The more we find out about this virus the more we see it attacking immuno compromised and obese people. Forcing people outdoors is probably the best way to go - big picture.

Yes, the Santa Cruz beaches are open as of Friday, 4-17-2020.

 Have at it.
