Title: Offroad Wing Skate Board
Post by: red_tx on February 21, 2020, 05:50:04 PM
What is the best off road wing skate board folks are using? I would like to get something that would work in grass and or the beach. Possibly with full or half foot straps. Maybe the ability to change out wheels based on sand grass etc. I looked through this category and did not see this discussion. Let me know if I did as i don't want to re invent the wheel here.

Thanks

You want the ones with pneumatic wheels.

I used to sand sail a mountain board--fat tires, wide trucks, footstraps. I changed out the knobbys for wider slick wheels with a deep center ridge for sand. Sailed it with a 3.0M windsurf sail. It had brakes but I ditched them in favor of just running the thing into the ocean when I got going too fast. My crummy 1990's GPS said 40 + mph on the packed damp sand.

I have your basic (nothing special) MBS Atom 90 mountain board with the foot straps removed. Maybe $160ish on Amazon (?).  Only tried it once (just haven’t had the time) on this Bermuda grass field. Way more rolling resistance than my street long board on pavement. Didn’t have enough wind on that one attempt, but it seemed very doable with decent fun potential

Straps are risky for taking a spill so I immediately removed them. When you remove the foot straps you can easily “catch” the wheels so you have to concentrate on keeping your stance narrow or mod the board with “end bumps”. I think I’d get caught in foot hooks just as easily as straps (need to move your feet really quick to bail out without falling).  I think I’d also have a lot of fun on some hard beach as well. Just need to find the time!

In a hilarious twist, I got a super cheap longboard that had horrible bearings. That’s actually probably about right to learn on. Just tighten them down and you’ve got built in brakes. Lube them and get nicer bearings when you progress.

These things are $50-$60 online or at your local sports store.

I think power-assisting a Onewheel with a wing would be fun - Daytona here I come!

I tried this once in some gusty wind and it was super sketchy haha
