I liked the "Boost" mode the best.

Pretty cool how they can take that level of movement and make it clear and smooth!

Yeah, I haven’t really thought of upgrading til this new gen. It’s truly crazy.

I’m still rocking a Hero 2. Might be time  🤣

I have a few days in with the hero 8 now and the stabilization is very impressive.  Drone Gimbal impressive.

Even on "High" it is really good.  "Boost" is incredible but it is not available in all resolutions because it uses outside pixels for image adjustment.  This isn't an issue for me because I don't really enjoy super wide angle self shots (or self-shot video at all).  For  away facing video this camera is incredible.  Not only does Boost work but you also have easy access to modes that do away with that typical fisheye go pro look and offer linear undistorted video.  The menu system is really top notch now as well so you can easily see which stabilization modes are available in which resolutions.  I hadn't owned a GoPro in quite a few generations but this one got my attention and it is really well done.

For somebody like myself who almost pulled the trigger last night on the Hero 7 black for 329.00 only because my friend has one and he loves it, says its pretty simple to use. Now the 8 is out which is 399.00 again I'm a total newbie with go pro, which one should I buy?

There are deals online all over for discounted 8’s. It’s a quantum leap.

Best I could find is 399.00 comes with a few extras, same package was 349.00 at black Friday and Christmas from Best Buys. The 7 black is 329.00 with no extras.

That is really cool.  Somewhat related, but anyone have any opinion on what the best camera is for shooting away from you?  I don't have much interest in shots of me out on my board, but I love getting footage of dolphins, whales, etc.  My one issue with GoPros is how close I need to get for good footage--anything further than 20-30ft away is pretty hard to pick up in much detail.

Any other cameras out there or ways to monkey with the GoPro to get things more clear?

BTW--here's a good deal on the Hero 8:  $349

Since they retired GoPro Studio, what software are folks using other than Quick?

I've looked for the same thing over the years, but haven't bought one yet. I have a Canon PowerShot A590 IS in a cheap waterproof bag. I've got some great shots from it, but It's a pain to operate in the bag. The zoom is near impossible to adjust in the bag. The bags stay water tight, but I've never had it more than a few feet underwater. One of the WaveSki guys at SanO has a small waterproof point and shoot that he has mounted on a handle / pistol grip. He wears a fishing / kayak vest and just slides the grip down into a pocket so the camera is mounted like a GoPro chest mount. He can quickly pull it out for handheld shots on just film while it's in the pocket. The spec's and reviews are pretty good on this Nikon

I tried Quick and I hated it. It might be good for people who know nothing about editing and don't want to learn. Almost all the editing programs are the similar in format. I've used probably 4 or 5 now, and most including Adobe Premiere Pro took me about a hour to get use to. I haven't even scratched the surface with Premiere Pro, but I've done just about everything on GoPro Studio. I've used imovie a bunch of times years ago and it's easy. If you have Windows 10 the basic Video Editor gets the job done. It lacks smooth transitions and fades, but you can add music, trim, edit, add titles, etc.. with it and it's quick and efficient. If you want GoPro Studio which still works great, I can drop box it to you. Just pm me.

The newer GoPros have a mode to reduce distortion. Get on YouTube and check it out. You can adjust the width of the shot now.

Still not the same as a camcorder but I promise, you won’t carry and adjust the settings on a camcorder. The best camera is the one you have on you.

If you want to try, you could carry a phone or most any other camera in a bag but it won’t be very useable. Consider the environment and more stuff you try, the action cams make more sense.

I have hopes for the 360 cams where you can crop later and pull the shot you want, but we’re about one generation early still.

goporo's are excellent and have great utility for many, but..............

remember when gopro traded 80 bux and i said right here on the zone that the stock was an obvious short?

gopro was one of the trade layups one sees if one pays just a little attention--nothing else to do, sitting in my office all day

only other call i made here was to buy crude in the 30's--trades the 60's

no more calls--next will be a disaster!

Hi Bulky,

The new 8 is excellent for this.

I am with you.  There are very few subjects that are exciting or engaging in in selfie-shot wide angle fish-eye (normal go-pro footage with the camera aimed at the rider).  I usually get 5 seconds into those videos before clicking out.

The 8 has a linear and a narrow mode which not only narrow the frame of view (which "brings the background closer") but also does away with the massive distortion that goes along with the widest modes.

Interesting comments. I’m just the opposite. GoPro was always designed as a durable wide angle (close subject) selfie action cam from day one. That has always been, and remains it’s key feature. 5 seconds into a head or chest mount cam of something in the distance, or nothing but water, and I tune out. Some blurry shot of a rider being filmed way off in the distance, same thing. But then again I’ll take any video over a 4 paragraph sleep inducing verbal discussion of someone’s last session. If nothing else I can progress faster watching selfie videos of my mistakes :P

Insta360 is announcing a new waterproof 360 action cam this month. That has peeked my interest, otherwise perfectly happy with the Hero7.

Thanks!  I appreciate the screenshots for comparison.  Might be time for an upgrade....

So I can really get some close-ups of my friends surfing, I picked up a Sigma 100-400 mm. On my crop frame Canon DSLR it's a 150-600 mm equivalent. My old T2i still works great but the AF tracking and Shutter speeds are a little slow. I'm looking to upgrade the body to a Canon 7d mark ii. Anyone want to trade a 7d mark ii for a Coreban Icon and some cash?
Here's my new lens and some shots I took of Dave Boehne a few weeks ago at San O. Great lens.
