Title: Mega random but perhaps helpful
Post by: PonoBill on October 26, 2019, 09:28:29 AM
This is beyond random and I hesitated to share it, but I found it interesting and potentially helpful when I came upon it a week ago on Ted, and now it popped up again on Pocket. With my deep bag of neurological quirks I'm always looking for ways to discipline myself. So maybe someone else finds it useful. https://ideas.ted.com/5-effective-exercises-to-help-you-stop-believing-your-unwanted-automatic-thoughts/

emotional freedom technique: tapping is also a very good form of releasing stress, anxiety and repetitive behaviors.  Its well studied and practiced in the VA's.  I have all my clients use this technique, I use it as well.

"...our more usual state is one of mind wandering, which is often characterized by a good deal of mental disagreement and disengagement."

Chit, if I had a penny for every...    The bad news - for me anyway - it has gotten worse with age.   It is particularly difficult to manage multiple 'tasks' or simply listen to a flow chart podcast without 'wandering'.

Bill, the topic is worthy.  I may have to print this out ...' storm cells coming thru - I need to check radar.

What happens - or does it mean - that while reading the article, your thoughts start wandering all over to the point of not finishing the article, and having to come back here to ask the question? Did they happen to mention that somewhere before the end of the article? If so, can someone please tell me how far down the page a need to go to find my answer so figure it out rethink things in order to then then be able backtrack to where I exited...to then finish learning how to not become so distracted with my thoughts, and complete my reading? Thanks in advance.  :o :D

SanO, lol. But Iíll add that like surfing, you can learn and get better at stuff like this. Iíve made a 180į turn in my life over the last 15 years and it didnít cost a dime. Just like I couldnít surf once, and couldnít run a business and couldnít do, and, and, and... my mind got trained. And most of it was stopping all the negative stuff I told myself constantly.

Maybe I actually donít want to do that... or maybe Iím scared? How do I know, right?

I canít tell you what will work for any of you, but this sort of stuff works 100%. My life and my happiness are living proof. I just wish Iíd figured this stuff out sooner. But then again, the first part of life was ďinterestingĒ lol.

Sano--when you're having that kind of problem you know you're on to something. Same thing happens to me--it's just part of my life, part of how my mind works. When I get distracted when I'm doing something worthwhile and I want to leave it off and do something else, my internal excuse is "I'll do this later" or "I'm going to take a break and come back to this". I've learned to laugh at that and ask "how will later be better". If I can't answer that reasonably then I stand up, walk around a little, and get back to it.

I need to try digging into this. The added layer of a fucked up head doesn't make it easy but something has to change.
