Title: Foot Straps
Post by: VB_Foil on October 21, 2019, 08:01:45 AM
Who is using foot straps when winging?  I'm considering adding some to my FSM SUP using NSI adhesive surface mount inserts.  Was leaning towards the Armstrong straps.  Two up front/offset to allow switching stances and one strap over the mast.   While looking at NSI's sight, I came across this T-90 Foot Strap:

Seems to have come out some time ago to quite a bit of ridicule from kiters (big surprise).

I was thinking of setting up a similar orientation with the two Armstrong straps up front.  Anyone think this 'man thong' front foot strap would work well for Free Winging?

I suppose I need to get proficient on the wing before I make this leap, but I'm always interested to hear others thoughts on the matter.

A single LONG foot hook would work better. It will give you the security of a strap, but work both tacks. And the foot falls out in a crash. This one is made with heated and bent 1” PVC pipe. Flattened and wrapped with a footstrap cover. It works better than the ones you can buy.

It’s what my wife and I used during our kook kiting stage.

Thank you for reminding me of this DW.  I think I will give this a shot.  Need to find something else to wrap the pvc in.  Maybe old wetsuit neoprene and black duct tape.

Here is what I have been using on my flying V. I think NSI calls them low foot hookers. Work like charm. Took it out yesterday for foil surfing and they do feel great. Just another option.

Excellent, Dwight...  'Just got 4 straps off eBay for a 'thingy' and was concerned about twisted ankles, or worse ..the enviable.   Looks like three holes in your tube; how many did you use?  Thanks.

A single front strap on the centerline was not doing much for me.  On my front foot my toes are just crossing the centerline.  That means that even with the strap tight they aren't getting much from the strap. When I went to two angled front straps that put a lot more foot in the strap and my control improved a lot.

Hi Admin, in another thread (Fone Swing) you said "I had almost given up on footstraps after a failed session with front and rear straps last week, but I decided to give it one more day with just the two new (stick on) angled front straps. "  I too have been looking around for angled strap solutions, I'm an old windsurfer, so prefer switch stances. Could you tell me what your using for the stick on mounts and straps, and any measurements for placement would be nice too! Thanks, Rob

Hi Rob,

This is where I am with the straps.  These are NSI stick on inserts that had been suggested to me here.  My board has centerline inserts but they did not extend far enough forward towards the nose.  I put the stick-on's 3.5 inches in front of the front insert option.  I am using one of the existing inserts for the back  of the straps.  It is a single screw through both straps doubled up.

Remembering Gzasinets' mention of 'blocks'..  there is this big long video on foil safety presented by Robert of Blue Planet...

I have not watched it all, but I remember seeing something...  Push forward to 25:49.  Look at those little jammers...

That's a great video, watched it couple of times already and as you progress you always find some useful tips that you hadn't paid too much attention before.
Those foam blocks on Robert's board look really nice. So far I have been enjoying my NSI ones. I started initially with two blocks on the tail - I couldn't find a strap with my back foot because I am just too new to this foil thing. I did really liked having the front strap on the board - made things a lot easier - I have felt that I was more in control. But then when I started winging that angled front strap wasn't doing anything for me when I was riding switch. So that's how I ended up with foam blocks for the front. So I will stick to them for now. But I do feel though when I am proficient enough I would like to go back to straps - I have airs on my mind  ;D

@Admin - That's the ideal setup I guess. Works for surfing, winging, etc. I will probably end up with something similar.
