Title: Maliko video
Post by: gone_foiling on September 24, 2019, 10:32:36 PM
I guess dw videos are falling out of fashion with this foiling craze  ;D
Just a gorgeous day on Maliko run and fun waves.

I'll take a sup downwind video over foil any day, even a month after the fact ;D
I'm glad you took the F16 over the Bullet, it seems to have a relaxing affect on you ;)

Thanks for keeping the sup stoke!

I enjoyed watching this DW video. We just don't have the downwinding wind and water conditions here on the upper Texas coast which is where I spend my saltwater sup time. If we had the right wind and water conditions for downwinding, I would have bought a downwind board.

As for foiling, it doesn't appeal to me at all so I never access the Foil Sup category here on the Zone site.

I am still watching over and over again Peter Petersen downwind videos in Cape Town five years after they were filmed :-)
my dream would be an autopilot drone that automatically follow the boards when down winding while filming......
Foil....what's...to each its own.....

Thanks for watching and commenting gents!

@DavidJohn Thanks man! Miss your videos, always enjoyed your stuff.

@burchas Lana was trying to beat me so I had to resort to her f16, since my bullet was confiscated 😂 Yeah f16 is very easy and damn it surfs well.

@NW I am very familiar with your conditions- I live in Naples FL on the gulf coast. Here, I prefer compromise boards - my favorite for now is my infinity downtown. Although they sell it as dw board it is not a slouch in the flat water. Gets my approval. Thanks :)

@Luc Those vids are classic. Like them a lot. Drones already exist that will follow you - it's the battery life that still lacks. Hopefully soon.

Follow me is pretty standard on current drones, even the low-end ones. With a little planning you could easily do a drone-followed Maliko run. You just need to pick the place the drone will cut off to when it's battery gets depleted to a predetermined level that gets it safely to shore. I've set up flights with my Aspire2 to do long follow me on a bike runs with a cut off to land a mile perpendicular to me at a programmed location when the drone calculates that it needs to bail. Wind directions can screw that up and I had one short landing out of six or seven that I tried. The exercise was to prove I could do a downwind follow me. I think I can do it, but it's a $7k drone, so I haven't had the nerve to try it.

The cool part is that battery life on a downwind (bike) run where I was going about 10mph all the time was over 30 minutes where the usual random directions is 24-27 minutes.

I also played with a fixed wing drone to do downwind filming, but even with the biggest, draggiest wings it flew too fast, and you have to maintain speed faster than the wind to retain control authority within the limitations of the autopilot. 20kt wind, 30kt drone, 10kt paddler. Nope, nope, only works as a fly by.

Well i not even have a GoPro so a jump to a $7K drone that needs NASA programming might be a little bit steep :-)
I have seen video with a Virb360 and it was very nice when DW in a group. Did not like the price....

Then try the GoPro fusion. Same crap $400 less. Some of the DJI drones with superb quality are going under $500 with all sorts of sales. No need to spend 7K

I think this is your best video yet, and the others are great! I wanted to save this on Vimeo, but the Vimeo link on the forum viewer does not seem to work, and when I went to your Vimeo page, I could not find this new video. Would it be possible to link this to your Vimeo account so that we can watch it later?
Thanks.

Yeah, the $7K drone is silly, that was the end of Christmas and birthday presents for me, it was getting like a potlach. Diane loves presents, doesn't really matter what they are, she just digs it. I see them as a liability. Stuff I might not even want that I have to use and pretend to like. Nope. Done with that. I get baubles for her, with the agreement that she doesn't for me. Last Christmas she got me blackwing pencils. I love a good pencil.

The DJI Mavik Air is about $5-600 depending on who is having sales. I picked one up at Costco in Maui for $450 and it's every bit as good for what I do as that crazy Aspire 2 with its ridiculous cameras that I don't need. People are making movies in Hollywood with that gear. I don't even edit my videos. Most of them I look at once and toss.
