Title: Mid September Lows
Post by: OkiWild on September 15, 2019, 04:54:03 PM
Big tropical depression sitting off the coast, pushing some good swell our way, but also killing it with the wind direction. Wind speed and direction limiting spots available on the east coast, and with Sunday being the weekly national day of surfing ;-) it can be hard to find an uncrowded spot without a long drive.

So with high tide being around 0730, the whole island was doing the surf-scramble. General rule for Okinawa is three hours pre, to three hours post high tide. A spot that normally gets pretty crowded was dead empty because of the wind, but we decided to go check it anyway. And then the wind just died for about three hours. So we had this spot all to ourselves (me, another guy I SUP with, and one of the pronie groms that follow us around). Still pretty sloppy because of the current (headland), but good and head-high on the sets.

Did well standing and paddling in in the turbulent water, with the "no knees" commitment in full force. Rain drops really screw with blur on the camera lens, but it is what it is. All nose footage... Surfed four days this week, and this is the only day I had the camera out, so it's all I have. Just got the paddle mount, so I'll begin experimenting with that, too. Also got a good surf in in the evening at a break close to the house. Haven't looked at the footage yet.

Blue Planet  NP10 10'x28"x128" nose rider that I try to surf like a short board... :-)

Thanks for watching!

When the wind died, you got some nice head high waves to surf. Wish I had those type of waves.

Thanks for sharing your video.

Thanks for the video Oki!
Boy you really have to surf with bump on the water!

For the water drops on the lens:
just before you paddle out, put a few drops of dishwasher water spot remover.... then swish it around in the water to take to "smear" of liquid and smooth it out.
I use Cascade liquid rinse aid... or Jet Dry rinse aid for dishwashers

Keeps lens crystal clear  :)

The bump and wind doesn't always make for the most memorable sessions, but sometimes you just have to deal with it. There are a few gems in there and that's all you need to make the drive worth it. Thanks for sharing and the commentary.

Awesome advice, and will try. I've been doing the lick or spit thing and splashing with water, but even with a wet lens, when a rain drop hits it, it blurs. I've even gone the other way with Rain X, trying to keep the water off... Will try the dishwasher stuff for sure.

For sure with bump and chop, but the SUP makes what was formerly not surfable, surfable ;-)   I often wonder if people like the commentary, or if I just look like an idiot (which I am...) LOL.

Don't worry about what anyone thinks.

Many will appreciate your commentary, because we are interested in other SUPsters and people around the world.
When you talk, you personalize it, and we get to know you better.

Keep talking  :)

Storm Rider! I knew you over paddled that first wave even before the rug got pulled out from under ya! Nice sup surfing in that mess. Did you lose your bucket hat at one point?

Nah, I hate the hat, but the UV's in the sub-tropics, even when it's cloudy, and I've lost all my hair up top... If it gets dark enough, I put it away LOL.
