Title: Innegra Rails or Kevlar Rails
Post by: Night Wing on June 10, 2019, 08:34:47 PM
Which is better material wise for durability when used in sup rails? Is it innegra or kevlar?

Kevlar, but it's hard to work with.

I love kevlar. I just pay for it though. Lol. Super durable. It will dent. But will only break under extreme pressure.

Kevlar is pretty, and it's tough, but UV weakens it rapidly. Make sure if you get it that the hot coat blocks UV. Bitch to cut, bitch to laminate.

You might want to go to the Innegra web site and read up. Formula 1 race cars proved Innegra out performs Kevlar during a crash. Innegra is just better for us. But you want to be careful what you buy. Lots of stuff being sold as Innegra is really fiberglass with a few stands of Innegra woven in. Not the same as 100% Innegra cloth.

Also don’t compare 2oz Innegra to 6oz Kevlar.

Thanks for the replies. In hindsight, I should have clarified what I was thinking about late last night .

Infinity uses innegra in their rails and Blue Planet uses kevlar in their rails. I was trying to determine, without Railsaver Pro installed, which sup would be more likely to encounter paddle "scars" when the paddle blade hits the rail inadvertently during a paddle stroke.

Winger...   I just looked at the weak-side of my Blue Planet and there was one 'mark'   ...nothing needing attention.  I DO remember those boards made in sailboard factories with that matte finish that looked like sprayed getcoat. Those were prone to chipping just moving them around.

Besides, this, is a tool ...one was probably appropriately called a 'Hammer'.  The board depreciates 40% (if you are lucky) the minute you take delivery. Some ding'd up plastic tape is not going to turn depreciation into appreciation - it just puts you further in the hole.  Spend the extra $ on a decent paddle. (then rail tape the paddle if you're compelled)

Admission: I have 3M impact/abrasion film.  I used it on an SUV and then fell prone to herd movement on one of my early boards.  It looked like c'hit on the board after a season.  I suspect those people selling it for SUP were smart enough to put stripes or designs to visually mask markings.  Clear shows everything ..but then why would I want to mess up the look of my board with non-matching shelf-tape?

Trust me, life is short - play hard worry less.

Night wing, Which two boards are you specifically referring to? Ive had multiple cf and Kevlar railed boards and another factor i have found to rail strikes showing up is color. My lighter boards hid them much better than the darker opaque colored boards. The new production boards from infinity look top notch. And are similar to a customs construction. I may be wrong but aren't most of blue planets boards of the sandwich construction method? I would think the infinity for me would be a “happier long run purchase” overall. When just specially talking about construction methods. I agree with wetstuff. Just use it and forget about it. Can’t really go wrong with either one. Like ford vs chevy. Id choose the one you would rather paddle design wise.

The harder composites, CF, Kevlar, innegra and even S-glass provide a more rigid skin and therefore will, to some extent, protect the paint from deflection and delamination.

Whatever extent that is has to be extremely small. Any painted surface that you hit with a carbon fiber axe is going to ding and chip. That's a function of how tough and well-adhered the paint is.

And since we're talking about boards that someone else built, you won't know the quality of the innegra or kevlar. Board composition is a marketing tool, and marketing is not about telling the complete truth. From a materials suitability standpoint there isn't much to distinguish them.

Really, you won't know until you own the board, which means IMO Railsaver pro is a good investment for any board you'd like to keep pretty. I like the way it looks on a board when you get a suitable color and pattern. And I bash the shit out of rails, so I know if I don't use it, it won't matter what the rails are made of, they're going to look like crap very soon.

Night wing, Which two boards are you specifically referring to?

The two production made boards I'm looking at, not just for me, but also as a guest board are:

1) Infinity Wide Aquatic All Around 10'3" x 32" x 4.75" @ 183 liters (with 3 fin boxes)

2) Blue Planet Duke 10'5" x 32" x 4.5" @ 190 liters (with 5 fin boxes).

The Infinity has innegra rails and the Blue Planet has kevlar rails. These two boards with lots of liters of volume; will work well on the upper Texas coast, with its smallish waves, where I sup surf at.

I've got Railsaver Pro on my One World and both of my rails still look great just like the day I got my board from the shipping terminal. No marks on the rails (yet). When I'm flatwater paddling, I don't bash my rails. Every so often though, maybe once a session, I will slightly "tick" my rail usually on my right rail and I'm right handed.

If I get a third board, I'll put Railsaver Pro on both rails just to be on the safe side since some "guests" will be using the board too.

You might be right.

I was just drawing from my own experience.  My carbon boards, (Black Fish, New Deal and Naish LE) show very little rail damage, compared to my others, past and present.

I hate it when I make a mistake later on and can't edit the mistake in time.  >:(  The correction is:

1) Infinity Wide Aquatic All Around 10'4" x 32" x 4.75" @ 183 liters (with 3 fin boxes).

I have not researched Innegra, so can't say much about it.  I can say is that since we implemented the kevlar rails on our boards, we hardly ever need to repair damages to nose, tail and rails of our rental boards, whereas before these areas were most likely to get damaged regularly.  Kevlar can't be sanded, that's how resilient it is, that's why it's used in bullet proof vests.
In terms of paddle chips, the primer, paint and clear coat used is really important too.   On the early C4/ Boardworks boards the paint chipped off very easily.  The paint on our boards now is super tough and rarely chips off unless you really hit the rail hard and take a chunk out.  Rail tape keeps it looking nice, so we always recommend it.  It does keep the board looking good and preserves resale value, in my opinion.

I'll say that the Kevlar rails on the Blue Planet boards are worth their weight in gold to me. A couple of hits on rocks that did nothing but chip the paint off, when I thought I was doing a ding repair for sure.

Then...a couple of weeks ago, I brought a knife a gun fight. Was supposed to be small, so I brought the BP NP10 long board, but it turned out to be head-high, hollow, and shallow. Pearled, and felt the board come to a complete stop when the nose made contact with the reef. Coming from short boards, I thought it was going to be a write off. Ended up being a couple of 1" cracks. I could feel where the EPS had been compressed about a half inch, but that's where the damage stopped. A little sanding, some glass, and paint. The boards are incredibly tough.

My days of doing skate tricks on surf boards are done, so I could care less about a few pounds extra if it makes a board more durable. Don't care about resale, and I hate fixing boards, so I want tough boards, and they all get rail tape.

@ OkiWild

I've been doing my "research" on Blue Planet's boards with regards to toughness and durability. While surfing on YouTube, I ran across a Blue Planet video which actually shows their boards toughness and durability.

In the video below, when a BP board is sent from their manufacturing facility to BP in Hawaii, the staff at BP checks the board to see if there is a factoryndefect within the board. If a defect is found, the manufacturing facility requests the board be destroyed by "cutting the board into pieces".

But in the video, before this particular board is literally destroyed, the guys at BP in Hawaii demonstrate just how tough and durable their boards are. Even Robert gets in on the mayhem.  ;)

Hey Oki, I rented a 10' BP Nose Performer in Waikiki for a couple of weeks last August.  Great board!

To Robert's comment, I've found I can sand exposed kevlar nicely if I soak it with superglue.

@ Bean

The Blue Planet "Duke" has a nose rider nose since this board is in the Waikiki series.

Hey NW, at 32" that's just a little wide for my taste.  But on some days, it could be just the ticket.  At 28" the NP could be a challenge on some mornings, but very maneuverable.

Funny thing... I've hated longboards my whole life. Bought a couple of high performance ones here and there over the years, and sold them right away. When i got into SUP, something clicked, and I'd rather surf them than anything else. The NP10 is my favorite board. So much so, that I think about buying another one as a back up...LOL

@Night Wing  I haven't seen that one. What a horror show! They are tough.

Hey NW, at 32" that's just a little wide for my taste.  But on some days, it could be just the ticket.

I have a cranky lower back so my physical limitations have to be considered along with the wave and water conditions I usually find on the upper Texas coast. This is why my 11'1" x 30" One World, at 30" width, means I do not want to go any narrower than 30". Also, my (B) friend didn't like the 30" width on my One World when he was flat water paddling it. But he did like my One World, with it's 30" width, when he was sup surfing it down on Galveston Island.

BTW, I bit the bullet and ordered the guest board today, but I won't disclose what sup I ordered here in this topic thread. I'll put what I ordered in a different topic thread, the "A Guest Sup: 3 Main choices" topic thread (after I leave this topic thread).
