Title: Mr. Fugly gets Tracks and other stuff
Post by: PonoBill on May 22, 2019, 01:58:36 PM
I added tracks to the existing Tuttle box on Mr. Fugly so I can use the Axis foil plate mount. I also have the Axis tuttle adapter, but I figured it might be nice to try some adjustability. In the process I learned something new. I was going to just add mast tracks, but when I went by Chinook to pick them up one of the guys said most board makers are using the 10 inch fin box instead of a mast track. The fin box has the entry slot for the T-nut in the middle, which gives a little more adjustment and no chance of popping out the nut if the plate is adjusted to near the end of the track. Furthermore, the fin boxes are a little stouter--both a little deeper and thicker walled. I didn't realize that.

Chinook can't keep the 10" fin boxes in stock, so it's fortunate that I went by. They were just finishing a manufacturing run and I got four that I had to wait a few minutes for because they weren't quite finished. Good timing.

Can you share how you installed them?

This should be a good test for a 'custom' installation of tracks.

As you know I am sour on tracks having witnessed so many rip out.  I suspect you reinforced them with something.

All ideas and photos appreciated.  Nature, the Columbia River and 16 to 17 stones will work through the hypotheticals.

Actually, no. The block of PVC that the tuttle is embedded in overlapped the slots by about a half inch. I had plasnned to make half-cassettes but elected instead to just gorilla glue the tracks in place, relying on the connection to the tuttle block for reinforcement. Then I lapped a sunstantially bigger piece of carbon over everything with a layer of 6oz satin glass as a sanding layer. I think the combination of existing carbon, the PVC box, and a bigger second lap of carbon is sufficient. We'll see.

Mr. Fugly styling both the tuttle adapter and the plate mounts. Here's a little quiz. What's wrong with the first picture. Besides my shop looking like it was ransacked.

Easy, you mounted the foil the wrong way, it should be bellow the board and not on top of it, right.
You should open a Ponomuseum!
