Title: Sunova "Point Break' Review... an amazing 12' Surf SUP
Post by: supthecreek on May 20, 2019, 03:16:53 PM
ok.... he we go!

I have had 5 amazing sessions on this board since I picked up just over a week ago.
non breaking weakers .... head high and juicy.... small beach break..... windblown pointbreak
Outstanding on everything!

This is the board conceived by RbGar, for riding some remote points in RI, after riding my 14' Search.

The board he came up with is a totally different board than the Search, and was designed to be "surf specific", not an all purpose board.

Johnny and Bert Burger worked out a design that really caught my attention, since I was in the loop on it.

It does share some bits with the Search:
it's pointy and longer than most Surf SUPs... but that's where it ends.

I HAD to have one.... and I knew others would be very interested as well, so the Sunova Distributor agreed to order 8 of them.
4 are spoken for already, so if you want one.... email me soon, to order. Click my link email below.

This board surfs entirely different from any of the other "big" boards I have ridden.
It is like a blown up short board SUP, and doesn't surf in a "longboard" style.
Being 32" wide, it has a nice rail curve that loosens up the turns and allows it to be surfed from further forward than others.

It feels incredibly light and agile on the water, whether surfing or paddling.

I have set it up as a thruster... and am totally happy with it in every way.
This board is going to fill a LOT of my needs.... it's a ripper that is super stable and easy to paddle long distances.

There has been a lot of discussion on forums, about surfing 12' SUPs..... the time has come for this board!

I'll add more info and pictures later, but I want to get the video up now.
it's hard for me to believe this is a 12' board!

Great review Rick, now I’m seriously frothing to get home! I know this shape will also excel with confidence in bigger waves!

Nice video Rick.

Enjoyed the long length of the video. Loved the way your threw the nose around on the board for turning a long 12' sup. I imagine the narrow length helps out too.

Thanks for sharing the video.

I love how Rick is in a 2 mil paddling top and board shorts and everyone else is in 4/3's, hoods, booties and gloves.

Hooray for 12's!  That image at 2:20 and your first few seconds of video cements this as a new benchmark.  My Venom is too narrow for me to take in multi-swell surf but paddles like a dream.  Funny thing tho' ..only a tick over 10' stays wet.

.... I could sure use your extra width!

How is that goin' to fit in my apartment? Looks like fun though, especially given the number of non-breaking waves that go by me in the Rockaways.

Sweeeeet! Thank you Creek for taking the time to create such a cool video. Fantastic to see such long rides - very inspiring too!

rgbar, your design looks like a real winner and could well be as popular as the Speeed and the Creek in Sunova's range!

Are there any on the way to the UK?!!

Thanks Zonoids! ....
and thank you RbGar!!!!!!!

Rbgar.... I am also seriously frothing for you to get a nice session on your board!!!

I'd love to come down and film you..... let me know when you plan to go out!
Cataract surgery can keep me out of the water, but not off the beach!

Can't wait for our first remote point surf together!  :)

NEplay..... it's more than a little fun, enjoying the sunshine while they are wrapped in neoprene  ;D

Wetstuff you are correct .... the width is what gives it such buttery smooth turn-ability!

SS.... get creative! or 2- piece or move to a bigger place  ;)

supcymru - 2nd request from UK today.
I am sure you could order from your local dealer and have it on the next available container coming into Germany.

OA.... there is a way to know the first few apart.
for some inexplicable reason, they say "Search" on them.... I voiced my displeasure over that!
Tino said, the are the Search "Point Break" edition..... but that will get changed.

I told Tino I was going to print up "Point Break" stickers to put on the boards  ;D
Tino loved the idea and said he may make up Point Break shirts as well...... he said "what size?"   ha ha.... triple-X!  ;D

oceanAddict was the first "live" delivery I made (since RbGar was out delivering a yacht somewhere)

here's the "Kook Hat Cam" shot from the delivery to OA!
Thank you, that was fun getting a tour of your home breaks.... very cool spot and perfect for the "Point Break"

Maybe a thinned out custom.

Hi J

Perfect question to help define this design!

first off....  a "Point Break" mission statement, of sorts:
make no mistake, this board was designed to maximize fun, in the waves most of us actually surf.

(not the offshore monster reefs, that most other 12+ boards seem to be designed for)
-------------------------------------------------------------

I have had it in up to just slightly over head high (not to be mistaken with Hawaiian terms)
Running it as a thruster with relatively small fins..... 4.5" sides and a 5.75" center
I had some very late drops and hard bottom turns
It always felt rock solid.... not even a hint of discomfort

So..... until it proves otherwise, I'm going to surmise that it will be quite comfortable with some actual size  (for normal humans)
I would not hesitate to take it out at my favorite RI pointbreaks at up to DOH.
These are not sucked up, thick monsters..... just manageable waves I ride all my fav SUPs in.

It would be perfect at the "Wall" in Portugal at up to DOH as well....
it's the first break I thought of when I rode this board.
My buddy over there, said the same thing, after he saw the vid.

This board has very foiled rails and sits low in the water for a 200 liter board. (pic)
Combined with the rounded pin tail, will suit a wide range of waves comfortably
It has a wonderfully shaped nose that is great paddling into waves.

surfinJ..... the rainy cold, unnamed point that I paddled to in the vid, was your brothers house  ;D
Frick'n perfect for that gem!

as a note:
I would never consider riding my 14' Search in the DOH waves I have discussed....
That is a board that I only rode in specific benign conditions.

The "Point Break" is a totally different board, that is extremely easy to surf in most conditions
It surfs more like a blown up "short SUP"

Johnny "RbGar" is a genius for starting us down this road... and Bert nailed this design!

Please use responsibly!
In the wrong hands, this board could unreasonably dominate the peak.  :(

Wow!  VERY impressive!!!!!  That ride starting at min 0:45 is very very nice....it looks like an easy breezy board to maneuver. And especially perfect for small summer New England days....like you said "gonna make a lot of non-surf days surf days.

Of course, equally impressive is the fact that your trunkin it in 50 degree water with others around you in hood, booties and gloves!

First the "Creek", now the "Point Break"......what could possibly be next??????????????  Maybe the best nose riding SUP ever??

Creek, I like how you finagle nontraditional sizes and make them work so well. The main inspiration for getting my 9'2" Ace-Tec for cruising were your videos of cruising on a small board.

Looking at the picture of Rick paddling in the harbor, he seems to be the perfect rider weight for this board.

199 liters is a lot of volume. I imagine it might be a bit floaty for someone under 200 pounds.

A 170 -180 liter version for lighter riders would be cool.

My friend Ryan took the Point Break out while I set up the SoloShot3, and rode it really well, right out of the gate.
He's about 175 lbs.

Ryan loved it.

Big boards do not run by the same volume rules.
It's big for a reason.
Heck, even with me riding it, the weight to volume ratio is 1.84.... well over recommended volume for a rank beginner.

Big boards have always been ridden amazingly well by small guys.... there are videos everywhere disproving the same old talking points.

This board has a design that can be ripped by a 12 year old kid with skills....
or an easy board for a novice to learn on.

It's a big board..... not a short one.
But it feels super light and agile on the water.

Sequence my SoloShot got of Ryan, on my Point Break, as I carried his Laird out to swap with him.

Insert is Ryan on his Laird.... which is heavier than the 12' Point Break

Just curious as always.

Does the Point Break have a flat deck or a domed deck?

So, other than being 2 inches wider, 20 liters more volume and more fin boxes, how is the Point Break different from the standard all around Search 12?

Actually the only thing that’s the same is loa, it’s s completely new design: outline, rails, widths, tail, nose......

I can see how the overall outline and tail and nose widths would change with the board being 2 inches wider.

How are the rails different?

very nice sequence, rick

and ryan hits home the concept that the board may be big and exploits those advantages (glide, easy paddle in, access to more distant breaks, etc) yet allows an impressive unexpected nimbleness on the wave

stuck down here with graduation (actually my last HS'er and she's done so well and is off to her top choice college--so not "stuck" at all--lucky stepdad in fact) or id get up by you to swap you into my new quiver and get a try with the point break

thing looks so fun

Well when I was going back and forth the with Bert,Dylan and Rick on what I wanted etc I didn’t particularly ask what exactly the rail shape diffs between the Search or any other shape in his lineup, in my book that would be a over tweaker question, same goes for overall bottom contours and rockers , I asked what if questions and went with his recommendations, as I said earlier pressing further just flags being a tweaker, and people who over tweak usually end up with flawed designs.

So, other than being 2 inches wider, 20 liters more volume and more fin boxes, how is the Point Break different from the standard all around Search 12?

Simply put: nothing like the Search
except the both are long.... and have a pointy end.
and every Sunova shares the look and XXX Balsa construction.

ways they differ:
Point Break was designed from the ground up for maximum surf-ability... not as a multi-tasker
Point Break is wider, which gives more rail curve and hips to make it turn much easier.
Point Break has a rounded Pin Tail
Five fin boxes instead of one
The nose on the Point Break is fuller

Bert worked his magic on the rocker, fin placement and rail foil.
I don't profess to know anything about rail foil or rocker, Bert is an acclaimed, world class shaper. I leave it to him

They feel entirely different when paddling.

heres an easy way to compare the two:
compare the Point Break vid above.... to the vid below of the Search.... night and day.
The Search is a slow deliberate pivot turn and the Point Break is a smooth carving machine.
The Search is a blast to surf, but I only take it out on smaller days at soft, peeling or non breaking waves.
I will use the Point Break endlessly in lots of conditions.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Dh-O8HAdik&t=96s

Different sizes, but to even a quick glance, it's obvious that they are entirely different boards (pics below)

I like that you set it up as Thruster.

I just bought a 4 3/4" +- FCS II Thruster set for the Outer Reef. This should speed it up a bit. I also bought an inexpensive 6 inch Futures center fin just to play around with and see how it affects it.

It came with a big 9 inch longboard fin with two small quad rears and it felt over finned. I've never understood the reasoning behind having big fins on longer boards. I don't think board length affects fin dynamics all that much, at least for the way I surf.

The ad copy for the Outer Reef states... " custom 9″ TCPS single fin that’s big enough to offer an efficient flat-water stroke rate, while still allowing for easy turning."

So if you don't care about flat water tracking...

Also, how big (tall/deep) are the quad rears that came with the board? Interesting to know if those supplied are the same size as the "recommended" 4.26" quad rears that you are urged to buy separately.

Ok back to the stylish Point Break...

I actually think the center FCS box is a little limiting.  You can always throw an adapter into a US longboard box. (as most do for nubsters etc. I have two of them )

For long flatwater would be nice to throw a big fin in there to help tracking as said above.

either way board looks great!  Sure someone that concerned with the center box would just do a custom with a LB box.

Im still enamored with that 14 search.

When it gets really big and the board starts to bounce down the face or you just reach a higher speed, that slightly longer center fins keep the board engaged.  I've had my small quads wash out on the face of an OH wave many times. I'll get forward (middle of the board) for speed on a high line and the tail slides out a little. Never happens running a 6"center - thruster setup. 9" no. You'd get pretty locked in with a 9".
This is the quad set I have now which I use 90% of the time. https://www.thesurfboardwarehouse.com/p-2335-future-fins-rusty-r1-5-fin-set-br-smoke-hexbrused-from-finatic-free-shipping.aspx

This isn't about fins and you know it.

Please.... re read all your comments on all of RbGars build threads and how you derailed them.... changed the conversation to suit you.

Years of comments bent on destroying the "Search".
Every thread, every video I posted.... there you are.

RbGar was excited about his custom, he shared his stoke with us.

You never missed an opportunity to disparage RbGar's design for being much too wide at 32"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Allow me to recap your negative comments about his 32" wide board:

"but 32" still seems unnecessarily wide for a 12 footer IMO. "

"I'm surprised he widened it by two inches.
That is going to slow the board down and decrease glide.
Do you really need that much stability in a 12 foot board? "

"There is a ton of surface area there working to slow the board down."

"It might take a heavier rider to move such a big wide board."

"The hips and shoulders of the board are fairly wide which takes away from the boards ability to glide."

"Adding 2" to the width is going to slow it down even more and adding 19 liters to the volume isn't going to help IMO."

"To me, the whole reason for having a 12 foot board is the increased glide. I want to get into waves as early as possible and then be able to turn and carve once on the wave."

"If a 12 or 14 foot board can't catch a wave significantly earlier than a 10 footer of the same width, there is little point in surfing it."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then you went out and bought a 32" wide board.

I have to agree with Rick 110%. I’ve silently kept up with the threads about rgbar’s custom and it’s been fun to see his idea take shape and finally see the end result, however, I’ve become tired of badger’s endless passive aggressive criticisms and “IMO” statements. Enough badgering already.

It was not my intention to derail anything. You guys are reading into my comments and imagining some sort of passive aggression that isn't there. All those comments that Rick quoted above seem sound to me. I'm sorry if people are taking them the wrong way. In the future I will try to be more sensitive of how others might be taking what I write.

I'm not perfectly happy with the Outer Reef and am certainly not promoting it over the Point Break, but being a large board, it has something in common with the Point Break and I thought it was relevant to the conversation to bring it up. Running thrusters on boards this big is unusual and is an idea worth exploring.

Now that the Point Break has arrived and we're getting more information on it and seeing videos, I'm intrigued to the idea. That's why I've been asking questions about the volume, rails and any other aspects of the design that separate it from the Search. The Point Break seems like a step in the right direction.

Years ago, I did have the Search 14' for a couple of weeks and used it quite a bit in that time. I still stand behind my comments on that board. My main complaint was and still is that the description of the board on the website is misleading.

It is a nice looking Point Break. The color looks to be "teal" with my graphics card. It is also nice your 12' sup comes with 5 fin boxes. With all of those fin boxes, you're set up to handle any wave heights you may encounter.

Thanks for sharing all of the photos of your PB.

Very nice indeed. I don’t know why everyone doesn’t have this sort of board - they are so incredibly versatile. I have a PSH 12ft gun which is 28 7/8" wide and 4 3/4" thick, and a Hypr Nalu Hawaii Gun, which is 12ft6” x 29” and 4 7/32” thick and they are two of my most treasured boards. I even took the Hypr Hawaii gun for a 5- mile pure flat water paddle today, when I could have taken any one of my several raceboards instead. They are just so relaxing and easy to paddle. And they will catch absolutely everything wave-wise, and get you in and out early.

It’s great to see Sunova doing this style of board too. The Point Break should do very well for bigger guys, whereas the PSH and Hypr Hawaii guns are probably a bit lean for really big guys, at 170L, if you want to use it for distance cruising as well as surf.

At the wearhouse now, picking up the last 2 Point Breaks for delivery!
There is one on hold, “pending payment”  for the 2nd one I sold today, during my 7 hour drive.
I should spend more time driving... seems like a winning sales strategy 😂😂

That Board looks awesome.  Feeling the new board stoke.  Just the best feeling!

The custom color really ops.  Such a cool way to deck out a Sunova.   Has me missing my Style......

Gorgeous blue dancefloor on that point break.  Has me thinking longer for my next ride. Waiting for the cinematic premiere!

Took it out for a flat water paddle yesterday with the 10” single fin and got my marks on where the rail savers are going. Very nice glide and with that fin she rode very straight and felt fast. I’ll deff race it in the “ run what ya brung” class. Really didn’t feel like 12’ in the water, lively and light. Super stable so the not so nice days will be doable, very stoked to get it into some surf!

Purely out of interest what is the bottom shape on this board?

I'm wondering if there's any comparison that can be made to the JP Hybrid which seems to be a bit of a touring shape up front but an out an out surf shape to the rear?

Hi Tube1
Thanks for the interest!

I sold the last one yesterday, as I was delivering two.
There is one that went to Primal Surf Shop in Brigantine NJ, which may be 4 sale, but I suspect the owner may keep in shop.

I’ll check on that

The next container will have more but I don’t know when that will be.

The owner of Primal is a very nice, very accommodating guy.   I'd give a shout.  He's got a litter of Sunovas at anytime and some other great goodies at his shop.

Prob. the best selection of performance Sups in stock in  NJ.

Got the board last Thursday. Got my first chance to get it wet yesterday.

It surfs as nice as it looks. It took about a third of a mile to get my balance paddling.
I probably rode 20 waves. Very nice, a cruzzy type  of nice. Not a bottom turn cutback
bottom turn cutback type of board. It does it but spaced out compared to tight.

Paddling out thru waves was also nice. Most of my longer boards seems to get caught
by passing waves and just you get stopped. Not this board, pops right over and keeps
going.

Not sure yet, but this board may work well for our outer reefs that rarely break.

Rgbar, this is a great design. I may have got an early one as mine says search
and has deck plugs for a net. I also have a mast base for wind surfing and looks
like a vent plug. I pulled and reseated the vent plug before use to make sure it was
tight. Was not sure about the fins. Looks like it came with the option of single,
twin or quad. Looks like trailing fin is large for thruster. I pulled a bunch of spare
fins to see about thruster options but ended up using the four for quad. So far
so good.

Thank you Rick and Jeff for making it happen. I wish Rick could have delivered.
This board is sitting in my beach trailer on the ready. Right next to it is a new
10' long board I also really like. Choices, choices   nice to have.

Sea ya

Thx for the report 1tube, and congrats on your board. I’ve been playing with fins all in small waves, currently running a smallish 2+1 setup that seems to be a good all around for small summer conditions.
