Title: What's coming
Post by: Admin on May 20, 2019, 05:40:49 AM
We are starting to see some higher quality vids for this new gear.  Stoked to be able to what is actually going on.

Here is a new one by Naish which shows some technique and light wind potential.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQgJupaQubU

One from SPG which was deep in another thread.

This video shows it going ugly. The rider is an expert foiler, BTW. Where’s the 3m when you need it.

If I tried that, I might as well book ahead for my next shoulder surgery.

DW:  Was this his first time?

I suspect Robby Naish has been out a few more times with his Willy Wonka contraption than this guy.  No matter what level you are at related sports this is new and you still have to put your time in and expect a few beatings.

Thansk for the videos Dwight.

The guy at Real looks like he is holding the wing with a really wide grip and also very far forward compared to the Niash videos.  I have not seen any instructionals on this yet.  Is there a difference in where you hold it. The further forward grip looks a little harder to handle along with also having the hands wider.  Also the Real guy looks like he is trying to muscle the wing rather than just hold it and direct it. I have no experience with these but I do want one. Just my observations and looking for pointers for when I get one.

I don’t live in NC anymore, so wasn’t there to know any more details. I know the riders Dad pretty well. He’s from a family of water sports experts. Kiters, windsurfer, foilers, so if he makes the first time in high winds look challenging, then it could be the same for most of us.

Roughly, two centuries ago, we winter folk (not me) had similar for speed skates.  Like cheezy, chrome dinette sets 'all that's old is new again'.

I really liked they touched the light wind/protected water in the Naish video since that is where I would probably
spend most of my time with a rig like that, but how realistic is this from a beginner stand point?

One thing I noticed was in the earlier videos, probably because of their windsurfing background, they were switching feet on the tack and jibes on the foil. That added a very complicated move. In all of these videos they are not switching feet. It's more like front side / back side sailing.

What are your thoughts on the SPG dual strut design vs Naish's single strut? Has anyone had a chance to try either one?

The dude getting overpowered on the Naish wing would probably be a happy camper in about two weeks. Even with my limited experience I see two things wrong--he isn't getting the foil up high, and he's sheeting like the wing is a sail.

TD,  This photo was taken 94 years ago, but I would bet there were people doing similar before that as there was no Netflicks or NASCAR.  The couple I remember seeing were one-handed, where the forearm and fist locked in like a medieval shield, requiring a stop and change of tack.   (notice - branding already established - the Chinese were on it.)

Okay, gotta call Tony, I'm tired of waiting. Otherwise I have a couple of old kites that are going to meet a grisly end.

The only thing keeping me for going crazy waiting, is I tried the latest and greatest windsurf foiling gear and I’m blown away. I’m coming back to windsurf foiling after having walked away 3 years ago when it wasn’t as good as kite foiling.

I just finished putting a mast track into Little Fugly. As soon as we get some wing here and I stop shaking in the cold I'm gonna go play.

Bad news....I windsurf foiled a SUP for awhile. It works, but feels like shit. The foil, being forward in the board, makes it track like shit. It’s squirrelly just trying to pump the sail and go straight due to that foil placement. It uphauls terrible. It wants to spin into the wind as soon as you tug on the uphaul. The forces don’t balance out ideal once up on the foil. My wife refused to ride it. She’s a good windsurf foiler too.

Slingshot has it right. Their boards and that Infinity 76 foil balance out the forces beautifully. Combine it with the Sailworks Flyer sail...magic, easy, fun.

The idea of having one board to do two sports is one of likable qualites of the windwings.
If the Sailworks Flyer sail could be mounted and easily used with my foilSUP it would be much more attractive than havining to buy another board, even if it's not as "simple" windwingsurfer.

It seems like it should be doable... to some degree... maybe?

Please tell me again why I want to quit windsurfing? Those 3.2 days at the hatch aren’t fun anymore? Those nice big swells aren’t fun on just a plane old JP Wave? For the manufacturers it’s a no brainer. “ It will change your life”. Sure bet.   It will be fun to see how it shakes out.

People who foil think everyone will jump on the bandwagon and those who don’t, sit and wait not understanding the attraction. I think this is why Slingshot still has so much old gear sitting in warehouses selling dirt cheap. They are not the only ones who guessed wrong on the public adoption rate.

It’s a sport you have to do, to understand the attraction. Nothing I can say will convince you.

The Hatch is basically empty in 4.7-5.0 conditions now.  Why not throw in something new?

For someone like me who did light wind-surfing and never got hooked and the idea of Kiting has the appeal of Colonoscopy, this setup looks promising.
No experience whatsoever but I'll be giving it a go very soon. Foil or not, just as in the Naish Video.

That drives me crazy--not knowing whether you've watched 1% or 90% of the video.  It's one reason I don't have an instagram account.  Although my dog does, and he uses it every day.  I guess when he watches a video, whatever part he's watching is the best video ever for him.

That’s the best tanker wave footage I have seen.  You need a foil.  It would be all time.

That wave had way more size and whitewater push than I would have imagined.

What people don't realize who haven't been on a foil is how much we feel 'Sorry' for people on surfboards.  Last summer on the East coast I would watch people surf and realize that the longboarders were GLUED to the edge of the whitewater.  There was NO way to escape down the line and do carving turns.  Sure you can on a Steamroller of a 10 foot wave in Fiji but NO WAY IN NORMAL SURF.

The foil changes all of that.  You can fly down the line and play 100 yards away from the whitewater AT SPEED. Turn hard enough to stress your legs out and come out FLYING the other direction with NO LOSS OF SPEED.  Those tanker waves would let you get in and then just go crazy with all that shoulder.  In fact they are probably better than typical ocean waves.  At Steamer Lane for example we can get rides for up to 2 minutes 600 to 800 yards but it has to be 15 ft+ @ 18 seconds.

You have a semi-predictable shipping pattern.  And if there is wind - NO PROBLEM.

Here was a shot taken last weekend.  It was 4 to 5.5 feet on takeoff and the shoulders would fade to nothing.  Turning with speed on nothing.

So true Beasho! The more I foil the less I want to SUP.

I miss Insanity Cruz, The lane, 3 mile and Waddle.

I'm envious of your rides....huge waves and long rides. One day I'll get better :)

Here's a video I made for friends from the other day. The cam is on our deck and unfortunately the 150 yd rides are not in view.

Yes, pretty crummy surf in Hood River today. Why would anybody drag a surfboard around here? We did have an excellent paddle to Ruthton and back though.
