Title: Down wind foil tips on the fly
Post by: Jacko on April 27, 2019, 09:29:06 PM
Hope someone gets some tips from this, I was not planning on doing a vid and was really just out teaching a mate to fly and thought why not talk some **** while i'm out here.

It is 9 minutes so be warned but if you want to learn then you might just pick up something that will help. https://www.oneoceansports.com/one-blog/2019/4/28/downwind-foiling-tips-on-the-fly

Nice job Jacko! A lot of useful information there. You and Jeremy Riggs are both good at filming and narrating while actually doing. I find it most difficult to maintain focus for a long downwinder. Losing concentration usually ends in coming down off the foil and having to pump or paddle to keep going. Another guy on Seabreeze, I think JB describes something he calls “retreating”as when you use the speed or energy from one bump to peel off that one and search for the next and so forth. I learn more each time I go and as many have said,it gets easier the more you go. Thanks for sharing

That is my friend Eric Terrien (he used to be a pro supracer). For this race it was flat for 4 km so he couldn't really fly, then it got super windy with big bumps, at this point he did one fly for 12 km (40min) never landed until he reached the beach.

Truy epic. He just flew pass everyone once the bumps started to get bigger.

I looks like Eric could use some tips on the fly from Jacko. He is paddling way too much :P

Eric just got the new 900 Axis, he said it make a huge difference, way more glide and speed, effortless. Nothing to do with the classic wings.

I wait for his report on waves to see how it surfs. Seems like Gofoil and Signature are really good in the surf so.

Are you coming to the Gorge this summer Jacko? One way or another I'm going to be downwinding on a foil this year. I may have to cheat like mad, or lose 30 pounds (cheating will be easier) but by damn I WILL be doing it.

There a number of the better foilers on Maui using 900 or 920 Axis in the surf and downwind. As I recall, the 920 is a bit lower aspect with more anhedral. Anyway, they work really well in either environment. Junya McGurn rips on his, as does Kathy Shipman and Mark Raaphorst.
