Title: Learning stuff
Post by: PonoBill on April 19, 2019, 11:49:44 AM
Interesting article. https://getpocket.com/explore/item/how-i-rewired-my-brain-to-become-fluent-in-math

Oddly, the author is one of the instructors in the "learning to learn" course that I've been spending absurd amounts of time with. My criticism of this and other Coursera courses is that it's too conceptual. I read the article before I realized that.

If I really want to learn something, I head to Kahn Academy or some other online tutorial that emphasizes practice and working examples. I believe that understanding the fundamentals of any complicated topic is critical to understanding, but retaining the ability to use the knowledge gained comes from practice, even if that practice is boring repetition.

EB, That piece in the Atlantic was an eyeopener or maybe adds to confirmation bias.  I have pretty much always been a skeptic because there almost always seems a financial angle (like when 'non-profit'* leaders, like the Red Cross, remodel and raise pay after 9/11) or when a person ascends to guru status, sexual deviation seems to evolve; how many centuries has 'The Church' been an international pedophile society?
