Title: Prone Foil Rig
Post by: red_tx on April 07, 2019, 09:58:27 AM
What is your favorite prone foil setup? Board and wing?

When you respond, know that I know how to surf(well) and are a beginner stand up foiler.

I have a decent Stand up foil rig (IWA 170) and Hypernut 7'0 or 7'4 , I forget. And am looking for a prone foil rig that my buddy and I can start trying.

I am 150LBS at 6 foot and my buddy is 5'2 at 130 something lbs.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts team foilers.

I found a couple of other helpful threads. Hope these help others also.

This one is pretty detailed.

I have the all Gofoil set Kai/IWA/M200/M280

For prone I use mostly the IWA front wing with Kai tail wing. Really good for pumping back out, good for turning.

I have a 4'3 x 19.5 33L as an all around board and 5'6 x 18 50L (my lazy board, the idea is to have a super efficient prone paddling board) both by Brawner from San Clemente.

Frenchfoiler, Thanks for the feedback. I keep reading about the Kai tail wing as being easier to turn/pump. I think we will land on a board between 5'5 and 6 something to start out with.

Robert, I clicked through the blue planet site and you were out of stock on all/most the blue planet prone rigs. Maybe I clicked wrong.

Thanks again Frenchfoiler. I'll post more as I gather info.

I've been on a 4'10" x 20" x 38L for about 6 months, and I'm 6'3" 200lbs.  My board before that was a 6'2" production Jimmy Lewis foil board that I grew out of pretty quickly.  I've been prone foiling for almost 2 years now, exclusively.

If you're going to get your pump on for 2 for 1 and 3+ for 1 waves you need to go shorter board length.  I also ride a Go Foil Iwa/Iwa tail setup.  Best combo for pump, surf, turn, etc...  My next board will be in the 4'6" range and alittle narrower, keeping same volume.

A 5'5" to 6' to start might be alittle big IMO.  Your weight I don't think you need to go that big of a board.  When going prone, and you're paddling in, you're going to lose that "glide" paddle in you're used to on the SUP and normal board surfing.  You have to come to grips that you're going to lose that...to gain the pump out to more waves....which really open up some additional fun.

DailyBread, awesome response. I appreciate it your tip on the 5'5"-6" being too large, and also your wing(s) recommendation.

Curious:
What brand/model is your 4'10" x 20" x 38?
What 4'6 ish size brand/model are you looking at? Maybe they are both custom.

Thanks again!

Actually I've had my 4'10 for almost a year, June to be exact.  Make by KT here on Maui https://ktsurfing.com/ .  He makes boards for Kai Lenny and many other pro's.

He's developed thet concave deck and tail kicker in the deck that has become a comfort that I want on all my boards now.  The flat deck boards just feel weird to me now.

All carbon, all custom.  He does have production foil boards also.  But my board has never had any box failure usues, no dings, etc.. color fades some but that's expected.  Solid construction and almost looks as new and it's been almost a year, and I foil almost daily.

Looking at KT doing another custom, he's super easy to work with, and keeps your files on computer so it's easy to tweak.
