Title: Great Year For Concerts
Post by: Quickbeam on March 19, 2019, 10:59:12 PM
Just yesterday I managed to get some tickets to see the Rolling Stones. I’ve seen them before. Twice in fact. But that was a very, very long time ago. So I’m pretty stoked to get these tickets. But this is really just the “icing on the cake” so to speak. My wife and I go to a lot of shows, and this year is turning out to be one of the best yet. As I said, we’ve now got tickets to see the Stones. But we also have tickets to see Paul McCartney (I’ve seen him a number of times previously and he always puts on a great show); Queen with Adam Lambert; Elton John; and ELO with Dhani Harrison. Is looking to be a very good year, at least concert wise!

There is some unbelievable music being made right now and its an incredible time for live performance.  I do find the top grossing tours of 2018 pretty depressing, though.

1. Ed Sheeran - $429,491,502 (99 shows)

2. Taylor Swift - $315,186,362 (48 shows)

3. Beyoncé & Jay-Z - $253,514,983 (48 shows)

4. Bruno Mars - $237,770,168 (100 shows)

5. Pink - $180,402,074 (88 shows)

6. Justin Timberlake - $149,277,272 (76 shows)

7. U2 - $119,203,900 (55 shows)

8. The Rolling Stones - $117,844,618 (14 shows)

9. Kenny Chesney - $114,333,176 (42 shows)

10. Journey & Def Leppard - $97,095,894 (60 shows)

I'm looking forward to the SeaHearNow, 2 day concert festival in Asbury Park, September 21-22.  Last year was a total blast, this year there is a whole new line-up, but it should be equally as good!

Two weeks ago, my wife and I went to Jackson Rancheria Casino on Northern California, to see Journey Live.  Not the Journey that has been seen and heard over the past 30 years, but almost the original Journey. Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie, the original founding members of Journey, got together last year and did a single concert with 3 other very talented musicians.  That concert was named Journey through Time and was so well received they decided to tour in 2019.  We went to the first show.  The difference between the "pop" music of the Steve Perry fronted Journey, along with all the singers who followed Steve Perry, was that this concert would include many of the songs from the first 3 Journey Albums.  If you have never heard them, check out the first album "Journey", and the 2nd "Look into the Future, and the last album before Steve Perry, "Next".
The concert included all of the hits from the Pop version of Journey and they played 7 songs from the first 3 albums.  The last time I heard those songs live was at Winterland around 1975.  It was surreal to be sitting there watching Neal and Gregg, playing songs they haven't played in 40 years.  Neal is as sharp as ever on guitar and Gregg sounded great.  The drummer was amazing.  He actually was a Steve Perry sound alike and fronted Journey when Steve Perry quit years ago.  He played the drums and sang all the Steve Perry hits, you would expect to hear at any other Journey Concert.
Much of the audience were obviously Pop Journey fans, and when they started the concert with 3 old Journey songs you could tell the younger "Don't stop Believing" crowd didn't know what to think when they played 7-8 minute instrumentals.
If you like "Old" Journey, don't miss this show.  If you can't go, google Neal Schon Journey Through Time.  There are  a lot of videos on line of them playing last year.

A few weeks ago I secured a couple of good tickets to see Peter Frampton during his final tour (Vina Robles Amphitheater), and it will be his final tour due to health.  Hopefully he will still be healthy enough to perform to his own standards when this concert finally happens,,,,,,,,,,, next October.  One has to act early to get good seats.

Why is that?  It shows how popular music still is, as well as how many people have enough disposal income to be able to attend those concerts.
Or is it that you don't necessarily like the music that is so popular?
Music is an elixir towards happiness.

That's the one (with the resuscitation tours being the odd exceptions).  Someone spiked the punch but the Hi-C rose back to the top.

Alrightythen, I'd go along with that, I would have like to have seen the Rolling Stones (on that list) about 20 to 25 years ago, but the Strolling Bones of today?  Nah.

Saw the Stones in 65. Before good PA was figured out. Lotsa screaming. Fun.

Again in 69 at Boston Garden. Mick Taylor. Incredible show!

And the Steel Wheel Tour. Living Color opened.

No interest in seeing 'em now.

But have fun!

Thanks Mr. Big. As I said in my original post, I’ve seen the Stones twice, but it has been a very long time. I’m actually really looking forward to seeing them again, and am pretty sure this will be the last chance I get.

Too funny! And while I’m not as old as Mick, Keith and company, I’m still no spring chicken! So for whatever reason, time to see the Stones.

The whole scene has changed so much. The bands we grew up with were huge.
When I was young The Stones, The Who, Richie Blackmore’s Rainbow, Frampton, Tull, Boston, The Good Rats, Springsteen.....
my teen years were a crazy time to be young and into the music. All started with the older crew I surfed with taking me to Led Zeppelin at Madison Sq Garden when I was 13yo.

Fast forward to adult family years with a wife that’s crowd averse and it was done.
A couple of years back and my come of age daughters got me to take them to some rock festivals, the new thing, 2-4 days of multiple bands and stages. Hearing a whole new slew of bands that are smaller but still rock. Different but cool.

I’m excited to be back into it, though I’m one of the few oldies, earplugged and sober.

This summer, no longer working, I’m planning to hit a couple, PinkPop and BBK live.
And a band I stumbled upon in NY in the late ‘80s, Living Colour in a stand alone show in Manchester.

I'm playing at  my hometown's  summer celebration, and a couple of art faires.  Lots of fun.  Make a little less than Ed Sheeran though ;)

I am still stuck in my time too much. I saw the Eagles on the Hotel California tour and Fleetwood Mac on the Rumours tour. I went to a stadium concert with over 100,000 people (Dog Days Rock Fest in Atlanta) to see Aerosmith, Santana, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Mother's Finest and a few others. I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd perform songs from Street Survivor (as well as their prior hits) a couple of months before the plane crash. I saw Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP, Foreigner, Foghat, Robin Trower, Alvin Lee, The Kinks, AC/DC, Beach Boys, Chicago, Derringer, Bob Seger and others I am not remembering all in the space of maybe 3 years. And yeah, there is a reason there are more I can't remember...

I saw Cage the Elephant a few years ago with one of the kids and that was a good show but most of what I have seen or heard in the last few decades just doesn't do as much for me.

Don’t know why I’m not, my daughters maybe. My two brothers still listen to only music from ‘their’ time. Although my concert going had stopped, I still stayed plugged into the new music scene. This started as an avid fan of WLIR when growing up in NY and these days it is tuning into college radio stations.

And yea, the warm haze of the memories is definitely clouded.

What’s that saying - If you remember the 60’s then you didn’t go through them? So while my memory may also be a bit cloudy, it was a great time to grow up. And there was some very, very good music. And like RideTheGlide, I’m still very much into the music of my youth. Mostly from the 60’s but also some 50’s. I just don’t think there is anything that compares to some of the music from that era.

But truthfully, music is such a personal thing and we all have different tastes. I should probably also clarify that I do like music beyond the 50’s and 60’s. I actually like a wide variety of music, but my passion is the older 50’s and 60’s. I have a pretty decent collection of older music (mostly 45’s) and one of my treasures is a 1959 Seeburg Jukebox (and wallbox) that I play my 45's on.

As for concerts, I’ve been going for as far back as I can remember. And am still going to this day. I love live music, but then I also like stage plays and most types of live performances.

I am not judging, just commenting on preference. I just love about all music.
From classical, blues and jazz of all the years to the pop, rock, hip-hop, reggae and rap from the 1950’s on. I regularly listen to it all. My brothers only listen to and attend concerts of 70-80s music. They focus on one thing where I get my pleasusure from a much wider pallet. To each his own.

And the music of my youth, The Good Rats, I was streaming it the other day.

The Good Rats played a ton of venues at the Jersey shore.  One of my favorites was Papa Popa.  Very cool band for sure J, and lots of great memories.
