Title: Vent Plug
Post by: Cruisinby on February 27, 2019, 07:45:12 AM: I have an older 12' PSH gun with no vent plug. Board is probably a 2010 in very good shape, very srtong construction with no issues. It has no vent plug. I bought it used and have no idea if it ever traveled in high altitude. I'm wondering if I need to intall one if I travel with it !

My 10' Coreban Icon doesn't have one, and neither did my 11'6 Naish Nalu (but I added one). If they are built well, specially if the blanks are molded with a vacuum bag composite finish, they really don't need one. Race and touring boards have a lot of foam volume in them, with lots of surface area to heat up. The more the foam that gets heated, the more the gas that builds up. That's why most race / touring boards have vent plugs.

Post by: Bean on February 27, 2019, 09:18:20 AM: If you decided that you wanted a leash plug, they are easy to install. Greenlight Surf Supply even offers a vented (Goretex) leash plug.

But as TD eluded, if it ain't broke don't fix it...

Just wondering traveling to some low mountain lakes.

Every year I take my boards from SoCal to Lake Tahoe over the Kingsbury grade (pass into Tahoe basin). From sea level to 7,300 ft. Hundreds of miles through 110 deg dessert to 40 deg mountains. Never had a problem with my un-vented boards. They are in board bags when I travel long distances.
