Last October I worked with Scotty at SMIK on a
9'2" x 30.5" x 3.75" x 122 liter Hipster Twin Mini
Mal.
He just sent me pic. He is delivering some team boards to Hawaii and will ship mine Air Cargo to Boston.
Geezer froth activated!
Will obviously do a review after I get that Bad Boy used to chilly waters!
-
But will it nose ride????????
🙄🤔🏄
-
Check out SMIK video Logging Out for your answer!
Some internet wizard may help and post a link!
-
Wait Biggie, a twin-fin mini mal? Isn't that a contradiction? I think I'm going to want one! ;D
-
Clearly a “yes”.

-
lookin good.
-
I imagine they are pretty expensive coming from Australia.
-
Aussie dollar discount.
Same or cheaper than others. Starboard, Naish,
JP, Fanatic, Infinity, Sunova, et cetera.
Check out prices at Surf FX..

Such a good video it has to be posted. Watch it in full screen.

very nice
-
Sweet board, great videos too.
-
Normally I don't care for longboards, but that's one I could get into riding. I wish they were sold here.
.
-
good concept, two boards in one package. I wouldn't mine a test ride 8)

Well it is here! Scotty went to Oahu to deliver boards to some local lads, surf in the Apptour event, and ship some boards to frothing customers in the US.
Mahalos to the boize at Blue Planet for doing an incredible wrap and pack.
When I went to Logan to grab it, the outer two piece box was in tatters. Did not have a good feeling.
When I bought it home the outer box separated and had fun chasing the two pieces down the street.
Underneath was an amazing wrap by the boize at Blue Planet; multiple layers of bubble pack, cardboard on the rails, and nose and tail protection. Under that was the original factory SMIK wrap.
Ding Lords were appeased. I was expecting the worse given the condition of the outer disaster box.
Am an olde fahrte and old school. Tradition insists that you must go for a session immediately on a new board!
Wax 'em up and hit it geezer. Went to Second Beach and grovelled in knee high onshore pigslop.
Board is awesome, even got up on the schnozz in that unrideable junk.
WhatsSup took a pic which I will post. Only if the resizing gods are happy.
Supposed to have decent surf. Will report and maybe even post some pics!
Pray for clean conditions.
-
Beautiful shot Cleve. That is sharp looking. Love the color. I could easily go for that board.
.
-
How does it compare to the New Deal ?
-
Too early to have a comprehensive analysis as I have only ridden in one foot onshore chop.
Quicker rail to rail 30.5 vs 31; slightly more stable wider tail vs elliptical rounded pin.
More stable up on the nose.
So far it is a performance shorter longboard that also noserides easily.
When I have ridden it in DOH hurricane surf
I will have more to say on Big Wave performance.
It is clearly NOT a dedicated Noserider, but the Hipster Twin concept is absolutely valid.
I was surprised how stable a twinny could be without a beeg center fin!
More later!

NICE
-
A number of manufacturers are now making short longboards. Fanatic, Starboard, Infinity, Jimmy Lewis, Flight, and Hobie as well as SMIK.
They are much easier to turn, faster, and can still noseride.
Had it out in some real waves yesterday and what a great design the Hipster Twin Mini Mal is.
Lots of info over on the breeze as well.
I knew it would be fast and loose because of the bottom contours, but to have a twinnie with
trailer hold in the critical section while on the schnozz was BIG fun!
I believe Scotty is clearly on to something!
-
Congrats Cleveland! Looking good! ;D
-
Good to hear it worked like you expected in bigger waves
I will leave a report once I get mine out
-
So she's fast and loose? Be careful Biggy. If she has enough class to be nose ridden, you might be able to tame her wild side. New board stoke.. the best.
-
Holy Cow Batman!
I just went to the SMIK website. I saw a picture of a familiar olde fahrte holding the Orange Ghost.
Heavens to Murgatroid!
-
Had to look that up, so many cartoons so short my memory...

-
I remember Snaglepuss. Another catch phrase of his was "Exit....stage left" and he ended sentences with the word "even" a lot. 8)
-
New board...even...
-
Well, it is spring here in New England. As unrepentant finaholic I have been experimenting with fins all winter. Lots of chat
Over on the breeze including advice from Scotty.
Stock fins too small. Tried Al Merricks with a bigger trailer. Too small and didn't work well on the schnozz.
Bought some shapers, but they were a little mushy. Cork. And the larger trailer not so much.
And then Shapers came out with glass Ashey Pacers 5.79 with a small trailer.
Nirvana! And Baby Huey delivered waves in Newport to test. No boots, no gloves, a two ml
Hurley (awesome suit on sale).
The issues that Scotty discussed were solved. Smaller trailer definitely better. HUGE twinnies better ( when you are noseriding) in combination with the small trailer, it is possible to get back to the tail and carve like a short board.
End of rant! I even have a pic if resizer works..
-
Hey Big....Is the cost and exhange prohibitive to get these boards to the US? It doesnt seem like they have a US distributor
-
Not an instant gratification deal. Aussie dollar discount. Scott gets them to you, by hook or by crook.
First one hand carried to Logan at 3am. Second sent from Hawaii United Air Cargo.
Check his current prices in Aussie Dollars. I think they are still around 2300.
Talk to Ninja Tuna here on zone about his experience. I think it went well!!🤣🌊🌈🌠
-
Yeah, I was able to get a hipster twin. Love it.
-
even though i no longer have a leg or a foot in this convo, i still go with what jimmy lewis once told me, that it ain't noseriding until you have at least one piggy over the nose. less than that, you're riding on the nose but you're not noseriding. it especially amused him, and slightly irritated him, when someone gets close to the nose and starts striking poses, soul arching and the like, when there's still 12" or even 2" left to go to make it legit. i myself have been at fault in that way more times than i care to remember. ha!
but like mr big says, this isn't a dedicated noserider, so allowances will have to be made ... even tho, at the same time, i maintain that any kind of posturing ought to be kept to zero ... though like i say, i've found it impossible to resist.
-
^ Did you exit the noseriding scene? I recall you were on a dedicated pursuit, with your B&B.
-
i have a leg/brain disorder that's made it impossible for me to SUP anymore, so ... no noseriding attempts, though i still dream about a miraculous recovery, which is why i still float around the zone, offering unasked-for opinions and so forth.
-
Back in the sixties a white stripe was placed a couple of feet from the nose. A scoring rider was one where you had both feet across the line.
And then Nat Young came to Cali and destroyed the Malibu lads and that earlier era ended.
I have hung five over, not of the cheater variety, on the MiniMal. No ten yet!
Much more fun than on my King's Crocodile 10' which was a dedicated noserider and deadly in the hollower waves on CC.
Concave, step deck, kinda like a Model A. Heavy, but only 122 liters.
It will be interesting what happens now that I have figured out the best fins for the SMIK!
-
... impossible for me to SUP anymore...
I must have missed that. Sorry to hear. But glad you continue to share the stoke/wisdom...
... Crocodile 10' ...concave, step deck...
What is the SMIK deck contour? Dome like the New Deal? Less so?
-
Dusk P. - The SMIK is waaay flatter then the New Deal!
Notice the ND was sold! Incredible performance LB but twitchy. The further I went towards the tip the twitchier it got.
I suspect the the 16.2 pound weight was not my friend while on the front third.
But there are vids of Dave Boehne noseriding on a 9' New Deal!
Just for fun. Found a pic of the Crocodile!
-
Ha... that’s a cool looking board!
-
is the SMIK as flat as the Jimmy B n B? I love the trad lines of the Jimmy -- very little nose rocker, lots of tail rocker, 50/50 rails, etc. But I suspect the SMIK is more progressively shaped. Nothing wrong w/ that, of course, just different.
-
Linter - next time I see WhatsSUP we will lay 'em out an have look see.
The bottom contours on the Hipster Long board
are a single concave going all the way to a double near the fins and v out the tail.
Scotty also makes a much more traditional long board called the Style Lord.
I just went back to his site and the Hipster Twin Long Board is no longer only a MiniMal. Ten foot available.
Google SMIK Hipster Twin Longboard and SMIK
Style Lord for the differences and a much more detailed discussion if you are so inclined!😎🌊👀
