Title: Encinitas- Day One and Two
Post by: surfercook on February 05, 2019, 12:10:58 PM
Been a challenge to dodge the rain squalls but me and the wife are making the best of it. Surf should be a go manana!

Nice memory clip. Just got back form there, I surfed every day rain on not.
only spring suit in the early morning, none later on when sunny.
I'll take these conditions every day compared to the east coast.

Have fun! beautiful waves.

Lots of good looking photos. Looks like you've picked a nice place to vacation. Nice town, nice accommodations and real nice looking waves.

Thanks for sharing.

Cookie, should cleaned-up by Thursday. Tomorrow may workout and still have some size, but the water quality will be iffy. Thursday and Friday look like go days. Friday is supposed to have more wind, but you never know. Maybe even squeeze in a Saturday morning before the next storm hits?

Sweet video.  The cove looked pretty clean in the video. Thats a cool place to paddle.  TD is correct on the forecast.  We might get a surprise tomorrow morning though?  Cross your fingers.  Cardiff has some great sand bars going on now. When it cleans up Thursday and Friday you will score.

Cool, Marc.  I was there about 20yrs ago and there were small cottage homes between what looked like a light rail and the beach. A place I thought I shudda bin born'd.  Have fun.

I don't know what I was thinking, but there are two places you need to know about if you're up for nightlife. Bellyup and The Kraken. Belly up occasionally has big-name performers, but if you like music and like to dance then any night is fine. Friday is my favorite because they have Atomic Groove play an early show. Being a geezer, late nights are not in the cards, especially when the surf is firing. You'd have to see and hear Atomic Groove to understand. Besides fine musicians, they have a rotating selection of gorgeous singers/dancers/cheerleaders to get everyone moving. Looking at the shoulders and arms of the Atomic Groove "Fly Girls" leads me to believe they are likely all surfer girlz. The place gets packed, arrive early. The attached restaurant is surprisingly good and has a separate entrance to the club. Seats inside are at a premium.

The Kraken is a hole in the wall more or less across the street from Cardiff Reef. Somewhat dead in the daylight hours, it's fun at night. One of those places that you wind up at, as in "...so we wound up at the Kracken..." It looks like such a firetrap that every room I walked into I looked for quick exits: "So if I throw a chair through that window, and then use a second one to clear the frame...". But once you get all your exits planned it does indeed rock.

Also worthwhile--Taco Tuesday at Brigantine in Del Mar. Great sunset view, reasonable if you don't go for a full menu and stick to happy hour.

And the very wicked Handel's Homemade Ice Cream joint in Encinitas.

Diggin' the replies, Zoners! Finally got in the water and waves today. was a piece of cake early right b4 the high tide. Paddled right out and started on the wave count. By the time the tide pushed in there were four and five rows of steam rollin' walls of white water punishing my to the shorebreak and drift down beach. one paddle out had me goin' for 20 mins easy w/many eff-u's muttered!
And i had assumed the SOLOSHOT was juiced up but she was completely flat bat wise. Luckily I had the power pack with so I plugged her in and after an hour she was charged up enough to boot. so I got the last 45 mins or so of the sesh. But the wind had started to come up and i was a bit tuckered. only managed one or two but better than nothin'.
...and thanx to Digger for the space heater. The Airbnb we are staying in has no heat and my wife is NOT a happy camper! But she is now! That thing is cookin'!

Good pics Marc!  Glad the heater helped you out - just another random purchase at Costco last time I had family in town :)

And Pono is spot on about Belly Up if you weren't aware of it.  Tonight is a really funky, bluesy, southern rock band called North Mississippi Allstars.  Tomorrow is Joan Osbourne singing Dylan songs.  And Friday is Atomic Groove  followed by Groundation - a jazzy roots, reggae band from NorCal.  Almost all general admission and only holds about 500ppl.  A few doors down Cedros from Culture brewing.

Glad you scored some surf Cookie. Should get cleaner early tomorrow. Hopefully, SanO Friday morning will work out. Nice to have some heat too. It's butt cold for us here. It was 50 in the sun today, but I still had shorts on.

Hey Mark, glad you got some water-time. Timing is every thing, if you'd have come a week earlier, you'd have had some sunny, warm waether, and pretty good surf. Looks like when you get back to NJ the storm will be following you. I was hoping to meet up for a surf with you this trip, but it's just not going to happen.

I had an interesting time in Mammoth trying to snowboard. First day I had two crummy runs and quit because the conditions were getting worst. Next day I never left the condo, and the third day we drove home early to avoid one of the worst blizzards Mammoth has ever had.

Sh1t happens.

How much longer are you in Encinitas?   Water has been kind of sketchy the last few days.  I'm finally headed out tomorrow AM.  I got an infection last year surfing after a storm that took 6 weeks and 4 different antibiotics to get rid of, so stay away from the lagoon outlets and sewer pipes.   Lots of better places to surf than moonlight - did somebody give you some directions to the best spots yet?
Title: Re: Encinitas- Day One and Two
Post by: surfercook on February 06, 2019, 11:18:19 PM
That Mammoth trip sounds a bit frustrating, Tom. Like you say, timing is everything. Seems Tuesday was 65F and sunny in NJ, with a perfect 5-6' groundswell fillin in too. Beauty of a low went off. Oh well, outa my hands so not losing sleep over it.

seasdart, I kinda like Moonlight, no cliff access and it's a sweet beach break. My last trip here I pretty much surfed the entire stretch from Cardiff Reef to Moonlight. Also one A+ day at Sunset Cliffs thanx to Zoner Tom. Hoping to hit a break in Solana Beach manana on/Digger's invite. But knowing more spots and directions can't hurt! Moonlight was sooo fun last trip. glassy long peelers to the beach. I was in heaven!

Good for you Marc, nice pics!

Haha, Pono mentioning Belly Up and the Kraken brings back so many memories for me.  I lived in North County in the 80’s, worked at Fish House West (no longer there) which was right next to the Kraken.  That little stretch was called restaurant row, across the street was The Chart House and the Triton.  North County is so nice but last time I visited the traffic and crowds was an eye opener.

An old friend of mine Kathy (tall blonde) worked at the Fish House West in the 80's. Her and I taught skiing together at Snow Summit.

That’s cool.  I don’t remember many names a lot of faces though.  I also worked at Fidel’s Mexican restaurant in Solana Beach, another fun place to work.

Hooked up w/Digger for a successful Seaside Reef sesh. Man was that nice! He showed me the lay-out and we started on the wave count right off the bat. Dig was slicin' it up sweet on a 9 something King's tri-fin. I called it the Twiggy model it's so narrow, thin, and curvy! He let me try it and it was difficult for me to adjust after floatin' around on the fatty Assassin.
Collaged some shots.

cookie! nice wave--enjoy the trip!
Never tire of hearin' that! Thanks.

Good to surf with you today!  Not like it's some secret spot but we were the only 2 out for over an hour on a sunny chest high morning.  Amazing what just  a little paddling can get you.  Who says SoCal is crowded?  :)

Great day at San Onofre. Amazing place. Most Zoners I ever met at once. Very cool! Really appreciate all the hospitality. That 10' Coreban TallDude lent me was a treat in the gentle peelers.

SOLOSHOT likes hat place!

Five days, five sessions, five spots in a row so far. My NJ connection out here hooked me up w/a retro longboard and we hit a spot in Carlsbad. Was pretty chilly, yesterday and today. Both dys I saw guys w/boots, gloves , and a hood. Brrrr!! But the stoke has been strong and alot of guys are out every day. Talked a bit w/a young guy yesterday in the water said he was here tentin' it in San Elijo State campgrounds. Said he'd come down from Long Beach.

SOLOSHOT fired off nicely in Carlsbad for us.

Me and Digger were diggin' it this morning. Leash broke, I had a long swim in, and my hands started gettin' numb, but still the stoke was strong. 6 days in a row now!

Double that on the 60+ stoke. Secret to keeping up the stoke as we age - don’t stop surfing, and you’re killin it.

Got a question looking at all the sessions you’re getting in.  How are you keeping the wifey from revolting?  For myself, the combo of a surf trip with the better half along has ended up with her bumming as I surfed many hours or me bumming as I didn’t surf enough.

How long are staying out there?

Ahh...the age old dilemma for us surfers w/non-surfing wives. Luckily here in CA the mornings are best and she runs while I surf. Granted she's usually only 90 mins and I'm more like 3 hrs but we have managed to stay happy. The remaining daylight hrs are reserved for time together boppin' around San Diego county.

I've not done one evening sesh though and the fomo has been a bit hard to handle missing the occasional evening glass-off. But I'm now 7 days in a row in the waves so lig. Also we've watched a girlie Netflix movie almost every nite. The girlie flicks have actually been quite entertaining and funny.

Yesterday we hit Torrey Pines glider port/Blacks Beach cliff access. She was SO scared to do the descent fearing a stumble would award her an injury. Luckily some ladies talked her into it.

Nice reporting on the trip Cookieman.... looks awesome!
Great that you got to tap the Zone connections and meet up with everyone  :)
Very cool that you get it all out timely!

I get so much footage and photos on my trip that I spend all my nites downloading and reviewing..... too tired to make anything of it.
The next day I get more..... I'm lost in images

Wow! Deja' Vu all over again!

I worked at the Fish House West as a bartender in the 70's.... loved that place and everybody there!
Belly Up was a regular hangout along with Bully's.
Never went to Kraken much.... but it was there then as well.

Ah Cookie.....SOOOOOOOO awesome!  Pic #1 is the best.  I can see Scripts pier in the background and La Jolla in the distance.....such fun times at La Jolla shores and just south (Tourmaline).  I feel the hankering for another work/play trip there!

I'll be honest, initially I thought your trip was gonna be a bust given the rain and incoming Pacific nastiness but holy cow it looks like you've been scoring in a big time way!!!  Stoked for ya!!!!

Love the pics and look foward to more...and of course some vids!

Thanx to all the zoners who posted and followed my 2019 California sup trip. Especially want to thank Digger for the parking pass and heater, and also TallDude for the heads up on when to hit San Onofre.

Pretty much the same here. Especially w/us only having 10 days we make the most of our time and try not to waste it in front of a computer screen.

Yea, same here. Was really considering myself lucky to have surfed a bunch of good days.

I'm home now having returned safely and will start editing my media. Quite a bit after 10 days but surfercooks tend to do that!
Was lucky to have mild temps and light winds for my return. Was a beautiful spring-like day and we were even treated to a cool halo-moon. took me a while to remember exactly how to connect the Session5 to my phone and navigate settings for Night Mode photos.

Thanks Cookie! That was a fun session. Glad you got to meet most of the SanO crew Zoners. I know there are a few Zoner's that frequent SanO, that I still haven't personally met. I hadn't surfed my 11'6 Nalu in a long time. I forgot how fun it was in those knee to waist waves. Looks like that 10' Icon was working for perfect for you on those slopey SanO waves. I'll have to do an east coast surf hook-up. My daughters going to college in Connecticut, so maybe on her semester move-in trip I can catch some surf north or south?
