Title: Vacation week Feb 19-26 Hallandale/Hollywood - anyone up to paddle?
Post by: oceanAddict on January 15, 2019, 02:00:35 PM
Hi there,

We are going to stay in that area and I'm planning to bring my AirBullet if everything goes accordingly to the plan. Is anyone interested in paddling together? If not - can someone who knows the area give me some pointers? like where could I land for paddling on "canals' or whatever they called?  is it safe waters for iSUP? etc.

thank you!

You should find a local shop to give you some advice, there is a chance of alligator/crocodile activity in that area.  But, with a little caution I bet you find some great places to paddle.

Thanks, Bean for the advice. First, I thought you are joking, then I realized - it's Florida... and not far from Everglades ...

Depending on where you go, you do not need to worry about alligators or crocodiles. Most places , no.  Unless you go paddle in the  everglades.  I would go to the beaches instead. All the beaches.  Hollywood beach has some stupid laws about not launching off the beach there. Surfrider is currently fighting it.  Just go north to Dania beach and you should be fine.  Plenty of places to go in the intercoastal throughout that whole area and then go up and down the canals.  Just use a public parking lot and you should not have any problems.   On the south side of port everglades is John u lloyd park now called Dr Von D mizellwhatever park.  There is a creek in there that i know a lot of people paddle down.  Fort Lauderdale through south to Miami has a reef system a couple hundred yards offshore that you can easily paddle to if you want to snorkel also.

This chick paddles a lot off the beaches. Browse through her stufff

Also, take a day trip to the keys and paddle down there.  THere is a shop called "Paddle the Florida Keys".

They rent boards and have some good areas to paddle right near their shop.

The only thing is just keep your eyes open. THere is a lot of boat traffic down there.

Wow, lot of info, thank you, tuna!

Hmm, we are staying in the hotel that literally on the border of Hallandale. Would they tell me just go 100 yards on the right? I cannot believe that I cannot walk out of the hotel and launch my inflatable SUP??? Does it mean could be fishing restrictions as well? I was planning to bring a surf road and try my luck while the family is still sleeping...

I think I better call the place tomorrow...  Good thing I still have time to prepare/ edit plans...

Here is the story about it.

Also, if you are going to fish, you will need a license. Even from shore.

Yeah, already had a quick exchange with Cat over IG. Then Surfrider Foundation local chapter sent me an image with access map. That is pretty ridiculous.  Got the fishing license already, luckily "7-days non-resident" available. But some species require extra payment :(

Just wanted to give everyone an update.

We spent 9 days there, but I was able to take the board out only twice. It was a very stormy/windy week and I had one session in calm weather and one in windy choppy condition. I asked guard on duty in advance and he had no problem with me launching off the beach, just asking to watch out for people, but I had nobody in water both times, first because it was DP and second - because it was too windy.

I had a blast both times and happy that I brought iSUP with me. Already told to wife, I'm going to bring it with me next time around.
