Real popular spot for flat water paddling but the tide swing at the full/new moon creates a strong current at I know it’s caught a couple experienced paddlers off guard. In this case the leashes don’t save lives. https://fox5sandiego.com/2018/11/26/woman-drowns-while-boating-in-popular-north-county-lagoon/

Current was really ripping through there as seen in this video

This is very sad.
Although that float line crossing the current is extremely dangerous. If that system were on a river or creek, it would be called a "strainer", and be considered a serious hazard to health and safety.
Let's hope they update the design to be more safe. Such as a suspended warning sign that doesn't actually enter the water current, and isn't a rope that crosses the river.

That vid is gnarly. Looks like the lifeguards cut the leash. So preventable had they just kept clear of that part of the lagoon.

It looks a bit like they really were not aware of the danger there. The tide flows out of those lagoons can be really impressive. I used to kayak surf on some of the lagoon out flows along the coast there at Ponto and Tamarack and they make huge standing waves at the point of highest tide flow. She likely got sucked into that current flow and into the barrier and did not have enough experience in getting out of a current or getting the leash off under severe conditions. I know from kayak surfing the outflows that the current at highest tide flow can pull you in within seconds so strongly you can not outpaddle it in a surf kayak.
My son who was about 15 at the time and I were surfing at South Ponto a long time ago on a very large day and he accidently got caught in an inward flow into Batiquitos lagoon Jetty. Even though we knew not to get caught in the current, I tried to help him but it was powerful and pulled us in so the large waves pounded us into the jetty, we finally just went with the flow and got sucked up into the jetty channel, but there were a few minutes where it was extremely sketchy in the huge waves, current and rocks at the jetty point.

What a shitty way to die. I'm particularly empathetic since I've had a leash entanglement that would have been fatal except for a bit of luck. Waist leash--you can get it off. That won't solve the problem of a million newbs paddling around thinking they're safe with a five-year-old ankle cuff, but it's what I'm going with.

...
As is most often the case.
With a leash should come the precautions. And should be part of day one instructions.

Another ill-advised attempt at paddleboarding into storm waters results in loss of life in Escondido. Sad.

One of my former students, Keaton Guthrie-Goss, died in a surfing accident last December.
