Title: Foil Mast/Deep Tuttle Box Bolt Hole Diameters?
Post by: maxsonic on July 14, 2018, 10:58:24 AM
Zoners,

I just procured a Exocet F91 Windfoil board and am matching it to a Slingshot FWIND1 Foil with Al Mast/Deep Tuttle Box Adapter. Looking forward to light air windfoiling here in San Diego.

The Slingshot uses two beefy M10 Diameter bolts to attach the Foil Mast/Adapter to the Board, however, the Exocet F91 is manufactured to accept two M6 diameter bolts in the Tuttle Box - the smaller two diameter bolts in the pic were provided with the board.

I'm curious, what diameters are most foil and foilboard manufacturers using for Deep Tuttle Mast/Board attachment fasteners?  M6,  M8, M10?

Looks like I will have to oversize the bolt holes on the new Exocet F91 to accept the Slingshot's M10 diameter mast/adapter bolts...just hoping that won't goon up the board for any other future foil I might want to use.

Once the oversize to M10 is done - perhaps I could custom manufacture a set of shouldered (flanged) bushings to make compatible with foil manufacturers who use smaller diameter mast bolt systems?

Recommendations?

Thanks
MAX

Nevermind...looks like Slingshot has a M10 to M6 Titanium Insert solution for their FWIND1 Foil Tuttle Adapter:

I trust that the M6 bolts will handle the loads of my XXL airframe!

Ok, here's what Slingshot Rep Wyatt Miller advises, guess I'm back to drilling the board holes to M10 oversize (size Z drill bit?):

I was bending the M6 bolts so we upgraded them to the M10.  None of them ever broke but there is a lot of stress on them.  So yes they do work but not ideal and you will want to buy some extras so you can change them if they bend.

You can also just drill the holes in the board bigger to fit M10.  That is what I did on the older Slingshot boards.  It does not compromise the watertightness of the board.

Cheers,
   Wyatt

I’m also a San Diego windsurfer. Let us know how the SS foil works in really light winds. I’ve been thinking about getting a foil and would love to hear your review.
