I’m going to be in Santa Monica for a week in July. Are there any known spots where people are foiling? Im happy to travel up to an hour or so. If you don’t want to name spots, maybe you could send me a PM.
Thanks
-
I'm in Huntington Beach..
Will depend on the swell and tide..
-
Evan, hit me up on here. I'm just getting started but I have a couple of spots close to SM that I'm trying and some other guys are already on a couple of spots up north.
Happy to share. Oh and I met you once with Wade! Be good to see you again.
-
What cowboy said. We cruise around these same spots. Would be cool to check out your rig too. I'm considering the same setup.
-
Hey guys. I’m a Santa Monica local and have been just starting out myself (on session 12ish) I don’t post here much but I lurk a lot. I’ve been traveling to popular spots in the counties north and south of here but haven’t had much luck locally yet. If u guys are willing to share via dm any spots that are working for you let me know I’m discreet and respctful. (Sounds like a shady massage parlor ad.) if not, I totally understand, and I’ll just keep lookin

Very cool. I'll be in town July 6-11th. Maybe we could do a meetup and go surf somewhere. I'd love to connect with some of my SUP brothers and sisters.
-
So I got my schedule and I'll be in the LA area for close to a week. Is San O the only place in SoCal that is like San O? The best wave to learn to foil on breaks far offshore and continues to roll and roll and roll. San O is pretty perfect in this regard. Cowells in Santa Cruz is also fairly ideal but very crowded. Is there anywhere from LAX to Ventura county line that breaks and rolls? I'm thinking Malibu/Latigo/Pt. Dune but don't know how foil friendly those spots are - especially Malibu. Here is my very loose itinerary if any of you would like to come foil/sup with me.
Wed: Afternoon sesh at San O then fireworks. (Camping at San O)
Thurs: Morning and evening sesh at San O (Camping at San O)
Friday: Morning sesh at San O then drive up to Santa Monica (hotel in Santa Monica)
Sat-Wednesday: LA. (hotel in Santa Monica)
I have some meetings Mon and Tuesday morning from 10-2. Other than that, I'm wide open.

Hi guys I used to live in San Clemente and foil at Sano which is world class for foiling, especially for learning.
Currently in France I'm moving to L.A in september. I would like to know if there anybody on the forum foiling around there ? I don't know much the area, hopfully there are some uncrowded/mushy/sloppy waves around there.
I know I will regret Sano (I will be there as much as I can), but I'm looking forward foiling downwind north Malibu, hopfully I will find people to join me.
-
Salut!
Latigo is pretty fun at high tide (at lower tide, the rocks get too close to the surface for comfort). Zeroes is also a good spot (left).
El Porto ( North of 42nd to avoid the crowd, between the smoke stacks and the jetty) gets good when the swell is smaller (happens a lot in the summer) and the tide high enough.
-
Thanks Dialy.
I've heard about Latigo and I surfed El Porto. I don't know Zeroes, I'm gonna check this.
-
I live down in Redondo and will check out El Porto.
-
I guess we can share our informations about foil spots as we are looking for the worst wave we can find on the coast, right ??
I foiled Latigo, I think it is a good spot for foiling/ I wold say better for sup foiling because the take off is not so easy on a prone. Watch out for rocks if you take off too much inside on small wave.
I foiled at Seal Beach on the rivermouth, nobody out there as it was super small and super dirty (but I guess it was because of the rain). I think it is a good spot for foiling when it is small and hight tide. This is the kind of wave you want for foiling, as it rolls on deep water so you ride the swell.

el porto.....up north of elporto actually....walk along the sidewalk to the jetty in front of the gas station and power plant...sandy bottom...works on all tides....usually not crowded....gotta pay for parking in the lot...kinda junk
sunset point....med to low tide only....lots of obstacles...beginners...high tide is no good rocks on shore create mean backwash
topanga....NO!
malibu....4 ft tide and higher only or youll scrape every run...4.5ft and up is awesome...but you better be under control...LOTS of obstacles...surfers....the little bay between 1st and 2nd is the BEST...half mile long runs from 2nd point to the wall ....easy...
point dume....great spot but a super hassle to get there for normal people...
county line....short fast punchy....obstacles
lots of shorepound beach breaks south of santa monica....havent tried them yet
-
Hey Frenchfoiler
Where exactly is the Seal Beach spot that you mention above? I work off of Bolsa and am trying to find a beginner foiling spot around there. thanks in advance

I'd guess San Gabriel river Jetty at 1st street. AKA seal beach jetty

thanks Fishman, i found it in google maps now.

Yes that's the spot. I heard it is a good wave on south swell, perfect for foiling with small swell. ;)

Thanks Steamroller, those are good tips. I saw you foiling at Malibu last week, you got some nice connections with super long ride !!

I foiled at Sunset Point, watch out for super slippery rocks when get in or exit !
For beginner I definetly recommand Sano, it is worth driving down there.
The problem with all those spots is that when it is small which is good for foiling, it is shallow...
-
Another nice foil session at Malibu surfrider. When it is small and hight tide 6', there is a fun little wave to ride on a foil, between 2nd point and 3rd point, you actually ride between the reef and the beach so you are not with the people you are way inside. It is like a swimming pool with nice little non breaking wave.
If anybody has a premium surfline, you can check the cam 10am to 10.40am.
I think it is important to show that we don't mess up with others people and we are respectful by riding waves noboby wants.
-
Just watched all your rides. Great stuff man and no, I’d never have thought you could ride that in between waves. Crazy.
If I get this DIY thing built would you be willing to meet at a beginner break and help me catch some white water and test this thing? I’m pushing to have it ready for boat testing by thanksgiving. We will see.

Yes sure !

And another fun sess today. Those flat days are pefect for foiling, well except that even with a hight tide 6'3, it is shallow on the take off zone.
Is it possible to post the vid from the cam ??
-
You can download them. I’ll try to grab them when I’m on my computer and post up. Really fun to see this stuff. I love it when you heard for the horizon pumping back out.
-
Frenchfoiler, I tried to get those files but the fires have the cams down today. I'll see if I can grab them before they go away. Rough times out there this weekend for sure.

Thanks, no worries.
Good foil session today at Sano, definetly world class foil wave !

This morning I went to Malibu surfrider for a upwind (walking up to the point) to down wind. I had some nice ride but I had to go wide to the outside to get the bigger bumps has the inside was protected, so I ended up far away and the walking back out on the beach was too long, way further to the pier...
I had a nice ride aroind 11.30, if somebody could get the surfline video that would be nice to see how it looked.
I didn't know what to expect and I haven't done many dw session so I used the M280 which is a little bit slow but at least it is ''easy'' for catching bumps.
-
I tried to surf the 280, just to see what it's like. Hard to catch a wave, but when you do you have to have every ounce of weight well forward. Slow as shit. I would mark it NOT for surfing, downwind only. When you overfoil it sucks so loudly that it's distracting. first time I did it I was looking around to see what the hell made all the noise just before the faceplant.

Anybody does down wind foiling in Los Angeles area ?
There are some good runs especially north Malibu.
Today I did a upwind/dw, 15 min upwind super boring and 2min dw super fun !
-
What wind? It was the Pacific lake today in Malibu. Never seen it so flat. Were you at county line?

It was nice meeting you at Latigo a month or two back when I was surfing there. Not ready for dw foiling yet but have been having a blast in the waves. A friend lent me an IWA wing and it was night and day to my M160 so I upgraded to an IWA / M200 combo--love the IWA everytime I have it out. If you need a shuttle, I wouldn't mind taking my 14' out for a light downwind run on a WNW at some point.

Off course steamroller, use those photos and yes it was fun foiling with you :)

You finally made it up here! The waves washed away the beach a couple weeks ago which makes it a bit hard to get up and down the rocks but otherwise fun waves... am sure I will see you on the water.

Yes I noticed that, impressive, no sand at all !!
-
Not really L.A area but depends on the traffic it can be close by ;)
Sano is definetly my favorite spot to go foiling, not only the wave but the vibe, the people you meet makes it so great.
Yesterday two kids I used to train sup racing were having a blast foiling.

What a good dw last sunday. The biggest I'va seen here, wind at some point were like 30nd and the bumps in the 3 last miles were huges.
I did a 14 km launching at Sano going straight to Dana Point harbor.

When Malibu gets as good as Maliko !!
