Title: Foil surfing behind a pontoon boat in AZ.
Post by: Evan Lloyd on June 07, 2018, 11:22:54 PM
After watching every damn video on youtube I feel like I have a personal relationship with the guys from Blue Planet.    ;D. Unable to contain my excitement, my Buddy and I rented a pontoon boat at Roosevelt Lake and he drug me around the lake for four hours.  It was super fun and a lot more doable than I imagined.  I shot a little video of the experience.  Let me know what you think. Arizona Super Kook!!!

Congrats on the fast success!
What did you learn that would help others start behind a boat?

That's a good question.  I used foot straps from the get-go because I wanted to make sure my feet were in the right place.  It seemed to help.  My focus was on control more than height. I kept trying to bring the board up and then put it down - over and over and over.  After I got that down, I felt comfortable enough to experiment with turning.  At first, I would just turn my head and let everything slowly follow.  After a while, I was able to start leaning into the turns.  The most surprising thing was how slow the boat can go while pulling you through the air.  You don't need, nor want very much speed.

Hope that helps.

Very cool Evan, nice documentation of the process..... it will do a lot to get people to take this route first!
You did amazingly well  :)
It will be interesting to see what happens when you get into waves.

Very cool, that was smooth...I think my brother is bringing his rig with him when he comes east...pretty sure he's going to get me to hurt myself.

Good stuff. I'd say you got a lot out of the experience. If you do it again I'd pay some attention to turning and banking. That's been hard for me to learn, I try to turn like a surfer, which doesn't work well when your rail and tail are two feet in the air. There's no reason you can't get good at controlling the foil being towed if that's what you have. Just a few horsepower pushing a dingy is more than enough to fly a foil, but something bigger is easier. A pontoon boat seems ideal.

Evan, I'm not sure what you do for a living but your video editing and narration skills are pro level. Wonderful video, and it looks like you had a bucket of fun.

Nice! Stoked for you and your video not only was extremely hellful but very well put togeth. Thanx for the confidence boost as I also enter the fascinating world of foiling on a sup. I lime the idea of baby steps as far as speed, lift, and turning. Guessing you didn't have  a  paddle that day. Btw- what is that impacf vest you're wearing?

Your videos have been my instructional video.  I hope one day I can return the favor.  Cheers.
