Title: Sakonnet Downwinders
Post by: rbgar on February 15, 2018, 06:51:23 AM
Casual invite: I live in Little Compton RI where I kite, SUP and surf all over but I've never down winded on my 14'. The Sakonnet river seems perfect for it, SW winds Sakonnet Point to Fogland or NW Island Park to Fogland. Be nice to have buddy so let me know when a little warmer temps start to fill in. Cheers, JB

I'm starting to think that I'm forever going to suck at downwinders but I'm game. I do need decent weather however...the name Fogland sounds a bit forbidding. Fog screws with my already shitty balance.... :P

I'm sure I suck at them too, Fogland is a beautiful beach park that sticks out into the Sakonnett River. Deff waiting for warmer weather before I get into it as I'm sure I'll be in the water allot!

I live in westport, right next door. A few of us were doing them back about 5 or 6 years ago but have stopped. I even sold my SIC Bullet. We really don't have DW conditions here in south east New England. It SEEMS like the river would work great but it never did. The wind is always slightly off angle, never lining up with the "swell". The "swell" is never swell but rather very short period 1 to 2 foot wind chop. Do not expect anything at all like you see from Hawaii, it ain't like that. The wind REALLY needs to be thumping, like at least 30 knts to get any kind of push but even then you don't get any glide from the swell. That was my experience from trying for three years. YMMV Good luck

If you want good bumps in a river the wind needs to be going against the current.
