I just found this. It provides more details about Kelly's perfect wave machine, and a good been-there-done-that opinion on how good it was.

His concerns were the same as mine. The perfect wave yes, but it seems like it would be too controlled and sterile. Part of the joy of surfing is the hunt for the right wave and best take off point. The days when it's bad (happening a lot here right now) make you appreciate the great days. Sharks, seaweed, current, and all the other negatives factor into the experience.
This is probably just sour grapes because I can't try it.

Check Stab and Beachgrit. I love/hate those sites but they really did a great job on the surf ranch. A lot of the writers were depressed about it because of it making perfection purchasable. Even if you go to Fiji, you might get skunked. Now you can buy a barrel. I hadn't considered that.

I would loooooove to ride it. I do not care if the author feels it is surfing or wave riding. The wave looks fantastic. Also if a ton of people go there, maybe a few less at my local break though I think it is probably that it will attract new people to the sport.
Certainly it will make surfing a viable olympic sport.

might be these pop up in places with wealthy dmeographic and, at least nearby, cheap real estate
might be they make the wave a loss leader showpiece to big mals/entertainment centers of sorts?
but, with only one wave every 5 minutes, and with what has to be huge build out expense, I dont see this becoming mainstream--surfing is a relatively cheap sport--grab your board and go
to surf this wave will make aspen seem cheap! and aspen's prolly 250$ for a day pass these days--and the ski gear runs into the thousands
more like a day of heli-skiing--which is appx 1000 per day--not a bad analogy---all play, little work, big machinery/carbon print, big bux!

I really doubt these would do very well coastal areas that have a significant surf population. Plus where would you put them? Regardless of how good the wave is why pay when free is an option? So with that (plus the things Eastbound mentioned), I wouldn’t count on them being popular enough to reduce the crowds at real surf breaks. MAYBE they would do ok in affluent landlocked areas but I think even that’s a stretch.
I suppose this would be the way to go for surfing in the Olympics but I still don’t understand why anyone wants surfing in the Olympics, but that’s a separate issue.

Sure would, but then I'd rather spend it on private lessons learning how to surf on the "real thing" in some awesome location 8)

Read my review of the wave in Austin. There's a reason they don't allow standups. I'm not sure that Nland's wave would be rideable on a SUP. I was barely able to keep an edge in with a 23" wide longboard. I can't imagine holding a 30" wide sup on that steep of a wave and I'd never try after surfing it.
Kelly's wave is different and has already had a standup on it. They allow whatever they want to. There have been body boards and skimboards all over it. It's private. Once it opens, who knows? But the main reason I SUP is to paddle out faster and move around the break. Once you get rid of that, how much do you really need the paddle in your hand? In a man made wave you only paddle 3 or 4 strokes and then you have to pop up.

Cool article. It's pretty much described exactly how I imagined the experience to be. Except the wave frequency was longer imagined for a man made. for me it would be the a one and done trip just to experience it. Def would miss the sea air.

I know I don't surf for the perfect wave. I surf for the whole experience. A big, big part of it is being out on the ocean with people I like and respect, sharing a great (or not great) experience with them. I get as big a thrill seeing a buddy get a great wave as I do myself. Well...almost. I love surfing shit waves with my brother.
Would I do it once--bet your ass I WILL. Will I make a habit of it. Nope.

Pretty much this. Surfing is the whole experience and it's a multi dimensional ritual not just riding the wave. It would also be like going fishing at a trout farm rather than camping by a stream and fishing there.
