Title: Thoughts and prayers going out to Zoners in Florida.
Post by: Zooport on September 10, 2017, 01:19:35 PM
Some of the Florida photos I saw today looked pretty gnarly.  Thoughts and prayers to all of you who evacuated or you who hunkered down and are weathering Irma.  Please let us know how you fare.

Yes, keep us posted as to how it's hitting, when you can.

This is a wicked hurricane for Florida. Wind and rain. I went through the rains of Harvey, but I think Irma is much worse.

The islands in the path look like they have been carpet bombed.

All the people doing silly things are hurricane mania.  The storms really do induce ozone madness before they come in, creating a bizarre sense of euphoria, empowerment, and invincibility. That's why people run around and have hurricane parties.

I remember in the day driving past Gulfport and seeing the foundations of the apartments where the residents were celebrating with parties before Hurricane Camille (I think), only to be killed except for a single person who survived riding a mattress into some trees on the storm surge.

I have felt that buzz from tropical storms, and it is really weird.

I heard on the news as I type this, there are about 4 million customers in Florida without electrical power. It's going to be a long night for the northern part of Florida.

We are in the beaches area just south of Jacksonville and we got hammered by the storm. It wasn't anticipated to be that bad so we stayed at our house to ride it out. Well it was worse than we expected and it got a little sketch for 12 hours. We are across the street from the intracoastal waterway and it breached the road into our yard.  4" from coming in my house. Crazy winds and lots of huge trees down all around us. 75% of the state was without power and many areas are devastated from the keys to Charleston.  Crazy how impactful this storm was and continues to be. The keys are cut off from the world and have no water, power or communications. Not to mention the millions of mobile homes and RV parks throughout the state of FL that are completely wiped out. We still have no real grasp on how bad the devastation is. Never before has there been a storm that had the entire state under a hurricane warning at one time. It stayed so powerful because it was in the gulf and the Atlantic at the same time for the length of FL. And it gave us mediocre waves!! Jose is churning in the Atlantic now and is supposed to do a loop and head north. We will get surf from that one but let's hope it actually heads how the forecast shows. Irma did what she wanted and only the Euro model was even close on the predictions.

Being a home designer / builder I've been thinking about the codes and the future of building in Florida and The Caribbean. A lot of our wind driven codes come from Dade County testing and requirements. Of course, a large percentage of the older fixed homes were not built to those standards and the mobile homes are not subject to almost any of the building codes and standards. Concrete homes are superior and if elevated above the potential storm surge are the safest. I will be interesting how this affects the mentality of building designs in your area.
If the homes were to become mostly concrete or structural steel with elevated building pads, water tanks, septic tanks, LP tanks, and protected solar panels, they could be self-sustaining for a certain length of time.

Glad you and your family are safe.

There are several threads (or whatever they call them) on Facebook showing relative damage in strongly code-controlled areas vs. less so. Some of them regarding the Caribbean, without reflecting on the relative wind strength. But still, point made. Though with a high enough wind or storm surge a concrete bunker might survive--but nothing around it will.

I get some major league twitches commenting on a post saying "my thoughts and prayers". It's turned into such a common thing to say. Seems pretty empty. I'm sending some money instead.

Got a close friend in St. John. That's been a bad run. No power, no water service, minimal food. Cell service is spotty and no ATMs or banking. She has a neighbor who's been sleeping outside in the exposed pad where his house used to be.

She tried to evacuate and couldn't. Rode out the storm under a mattress in her tub. House was concrete but her landlord didn't put plywood over windows and she had no means to. Rough one and a great tale of worst case scenarios.

She says that one of the biggest issues now is security. Drug addicts now getting desperate after a week. She's trying to get over to St. Croix where there are more services and the potential to get to the mainland.

I posted the drug addict story because one, it's true and also it'll worry the heck out of the PFD, leash, sunscreen crew on here. We also might root out the racists and gun nuts with a post like this. Y'all are welcome. ;)

PS, don't come for me on this one. I'm a gun owner. I'm just trolling y'all. But all this is true. Rough hang for her and yeah, Pono, I sent money which she can get in a day or two when she hits St. Croix. Wish I could send a damn jet.
