I can now say that yes indeed I have foiled before. Waves were difficult to catch but I managed to snag several. I did not think it was that difficult. Like anything it will be a learning curve. Couple of times the foil broke the water and hit the e-brake. I was ready for it and shifted all my weight back and rode it out. I am not liking the foot strap on the front foot but will keep an open mind.

Did you do heaps of research or any tow-foiling or just jump in ?
What board and foil were you on ? Did you install it your self ?
Do you think you got better with each wave ?

I've been internet foiling over the last few weeks but I just jumped in and tried it in the surf for my first time. Waves were on the small size 1 to 3. I was on one of King's boards (8'), with their new foil. My board is ready (7'8" Sims Sup), they installed one of their TUT boxes in it. My foil will be ready in a few more days. Going to go pick up my board this morning and do some more foil testing.

Awesome. Version 3 of his foil is now out. Looks like the Simsup style works well!

As of this morning, I am no longer a foil virgin either. Got the foil from FedEx last night and my board had its tuttle box already in and ready. A scramble to find a hardware store open early this morning for longer screws and I was off to the beach. Perfect knee high crumblers. I heard the hum of the foil and felt the lift several times but its going to take a bunch more tries to feel at all proficient. I was surprised that it wasn't at all hard to stay on the board and in control - I only had one yard-sale wipeout and that one was by choice to make sure I fell away from the foil.
Anyway, here's one more voice saying that you don't HAVE TO be towed behind a boat first, just go out and have fun learning.

Just got mine today! This board is a demo. Kalama is gonna shape me one depending on what how this goes. This is a 7'6" by 24". Been once behind the boat, but hoping to hit the surf tomorrow. Yeah I just noticed that. No curve? If so, you just my first home build simpler. ;)
24" wide! I guess the foil does help with stability. That's cool.

Just got back from my first day surfing the foil. WOW, is this fun! I felt like it was my first day surfing or first day on the standup all over again. I am SO Stoked. The Maliko is the right foil to start on. I popped up on tiny waves and by the end of my hour session I was able to turn and pump a little. Can't wait to go again. I'll try and get some pictures this weekend.

Nice set up Southbay! I heard Dave say his foil specific boards had rails "like boogey boards" and I'm guessing this is what he was referring to.

That board's shape is definitely different. What is the theory or reason on the rear rails?

now that I have been on it for about a week, I can discuss the board shape better. Also talked to Dave K about it in some detail.
What I have seen is many of the boards people are using for foiling are wide and short to get a ton of volume. The problem is that the tail is so wide that it makes it difficult to pump and get the board flying. These Kalama boards have these boogie board rails so they have a ton of volume, but the tails are pretty narrow. His newest boards are not only narrow, but also cut away volume at the tail, so that you can pump and get the board airborne quickly, plus keeps in out of the water for pumping later on.
Dave is currently shaping me a 6'10" x 24.5 with the new tail. I will be sure to post photos as soon as I get it.
Today is my 7th session in 10 days. This the best thing I have done since starting to SUP in 2008. So stoked!

Stoked to hear you are picking it up quickly. I've been having a hard time in less than ideal conditions. Looking forward to hitting it hard next week now that I am back from seeing my Pops on Orcas Island WA.
