ok.... I am leaving tomorrow for the Carolina Cup Pro Surf Contest.

What I have with me:
8'3 Shroom
8'5 Speeed
8'7 Shroom

At the Carolina Cup Race weekend, all of the new new Sunova race and downwind boards will be there!!!!!
Kelley Margetts will be running a Sunova Paddling clinic at the Carolina Cup Demo beach

I have Demos on weekends, but no fixed plans during the weeks.... if you can meet up, lets do it!! Check the calendar
I like surfing, paddling, drinking, eating, long walks on the beach....... ;D ;D
Plus I am bringing my Golf Clubs!!!

PM me here... I will check whenever I have internet. Leave your number... I'll call you.

Here's another look at "the ONE" 9'5... just to get you in the mood!

Wish I lived closer to Carolina. From "ogling" the list of boards, I wish I was close enough travel wise so I could demo that 10'6" Surf model.

Creek-
Small world- Just saw your shirt in the picture- i used to surf with Jon from Chino in the early 2000's when i lived up in the Boston Area.

Ill be headed down to the demo one of the two days (waves and kids dependent...) Gonna stack some of my boards up for some additional fun f swapping board to lend out.

If you make it up to NJ early on friday I should be around and generally free Friday afternoons for a surf if there are waves.

NJS.......I think Creek and I agree that Chino's t-shirts are our favorite surf related T's....:)....and John is one of the funniest bastards on the planet.

Wrightsville Beach ProAm was awesome!
Great waves early with lots of onshore wind for the finals
Guys were kiting all afternoon so it was tough in the finals.

I ran into lots of happy Sunova owners yesterday
2 Acids on the beach
2 Speeed owners there to watch
2 Flows on the Beach

I entered the most competitive Ameture devision.... the 50+ Masters
Lots of contestants. Great folks from all over
I chose to ride a bigger board because of the conditions.
In the semi finals I took 1st
I was up against a 7'1 square
7'4 custom traditional shape
And local fovorite, a major brand rep.
But the 9'2 Speeed beat them in the semis

I ended up 4tg in the finals so it was a good day for old dogs

I am going to Myrtle beach tomorrow.
I will do a demo somewhere in North Myrtle mid week. Stay posted

I delivered a 9'6 Flow to rgbar this morning at dawn. We got a 2 hour session in 3' glass. He ripped his new Flow!!!
I rode the 8'10 Flow and am super super stoked with it!
Too bad it was so wonky in the finals. I would have loved to compere on the smaller Flow!

I am on my phone so I dont know how to resize pictures. I got renexted 1st try so I'll serial post them 1 at a time

Appst, I will probably be back in Wrightsville by Thursday.... just call me. I have your number so I'll text you to make sure you have mine.

Funny.... all the RI, Carolina connections here this week. :)

If anyone is in the Myrtle area..... let me know. I m here till at least Wednesday, then back to The Carolina Cup.

I have and interesting story about the Pros at the contest, but I want to make a separate post in General.

I am adding some pics of the Sunova's that I saw at the contest.
All the riders that owned them are very stoked!

Beautiful day from start to finish for the Wrightsville Beach the ProAM

I am at Pine street in Garden City this morning
Come on down.
2 people in now riding 1-2' clean
30 huge leatherback turtles around us
Got great gopro footage paddling right next to them!

Looks great, Creek!  Santa Cruz has been like Seattle in February rather than spring.

I got a first "voluntary execution" 150 degree off the lip on Speeed a couple of days ago (if you don't count the completely accidental 180 one a couple of years ago, when I didn't know what I did, I was falling off and it just happened).

Onward and upward to a 180!

Turn, turn, turn! I am not finding 8.10 Speeed a difficult turner at all.

Awesome day yesterday!
Glassy 1' waves at dawn
The leatherback turtlefest was followed by a swamp paddle trip with alligators

Zero waves today so not going to plan any demo, heading to Charlestown for the day.

Pictures from yesterdays surf and wildlife encounters
I figure the sea turtles were there munching on the huge jellies that were everywhere.

You can see the size of the turtles heads after the jelly pic

The pic of me and the turtle is a picture of the GoPro back screen.... terrible pic but all I gotz till I get to a computer that will download my videos (home)

and yes Tino..... the 19th pic is an alligator we paddled by in the swamp  ;D

Waves in S.C. are small and on the weak side, so the favorite boards down here have been
9'5 "the ONE"
8'7 Shroom

Sorry cheaterboy.... I can't say when right now.... but a container of Sunova's will be landing in Cali sometime before summer. More later!

Floridasup..... you should ke your boards on a road trip to S Cruz.... I would!

on to the C Cup
Carolina Cup is buzzing.... all the top racers in the world are here and ready to battle tomorrow!!!

So much action and stoke around here you can feel it!
I wandered around checking out the merchandising booths and saying hi to people all afternoon.

Jason and April from Carolina Paddleboard Company were lining up people to demo the Sunova Race and downwind boards.....  the feedback was awesome.... folks were loving them!

Champion racer Kelly Margetts will be paddling his favorite Sunova in tomorrows Graveyard event.

It was cool to see a few superstars stop by to paddle these beautiful boards. The line-up attracted a LOT of interest from everyone!

Tino and his son Nalu had a great time talking boards, paddling the demo boards and playing in the surf. Nalu is such a great kid..... they flew in from Thailand a few days ago, drove from Jacksonville, Florida today,  then spent all day at the demo area and playing together in the surf.... very cool to watch them together! Nalu's artwork is on a lot of Sunova paddles..... including my personal favorite paddle.

Good luck to all the racers tomorrow... it should be a fantastic race day!

A few pics from today:

Sunday's events at the Carolina Cup were cancelled due to torrentail rain.... that lasted 2 days.

Today, it cleared up and cleaned up.... really fun waves with some size.
Tino had a meeting, our Air B&B guy surfed the crowded pier tubes.

I wandered off till I saw a street with NO surf cars cramming the parking.
SCORE..... I got a nice "A" frame peak all to myself for 3 hours.

Rode my 8'10 Flow 1st session. then my 9'2 Speeed after the wonk wore me out.

Pretty day.... Tino left a shortboard with out buddy Brian... then Tino, Kelly Margetts and Nalu headed north, towards NH.
Tino will take Kelly to the Annapolis race, then head to JimK's.
I am going to Virginia Beach Wednesday... arrive sometime after lunch.
Waiting to see if Freedom can arrange a demo for Thursday.
Bill H and Albe are in the loop for tomorrow... hit them up if you know them. They will know if we are going to meet somewhere tomorrow.

Pics I like:

This mornings rebirth

Too bad I ran over my beach cam last month.

Great time at the C Cup.... time to move north.
Tino and Kelly were already in NH.... headed towards RI by lunchtime.
I headed for Virginia Beach
The torrential rain from Sunday & Monday gave us amazing OH waves on Tuesday.

Today that rain made it's mark on travel.
The interstate I was traveling was closed by flooding.... all the detours were closing.... people driving in circles.
The entire interstate diverted to back roads.  :-\
Seri kept aiming me into the water, so I went rogue.

I wandered country roads for hours.... not another car in sight,  was officially in the boonies. And it was awesome!

I took 100's of pictures, with the idea of making them a movie.

Finally in Virginia Beach, I stopped to see Dave at Freedom Surf Shop, but he was surfing :D

I called some fiends and set up an impromptu demo.
I found a hobbit hole, filled it with Sunova's.
Albe, Bill, Sherry, Nancy and Eudy showed up for more great waves!!!!
I hit the water and ran into another Bill that came to the demo last year :)

Some travel pics.... cuz I love farming country and back roads.
No one anywhere.... going up country.... gonna go someplace I ain't never been before.....

and oh yeah...  Albe ripping the 8'3 Shroom and Nancy's 1st surf since shoulder surgery on "the One" 9'5

Great day Thursday in Va Beach.... an early morning surf check found empty waves in the middle of town, a few blocks from my friends house,  so we did some urban surfing.

She took a few videos of me after her session, so I grabbed some stills off them to share. Another Virginia Beach gift.
I was riding the 8'10 Flow.... so stoked with this board! A totally different animal than my 9'2 Flow was..... I am liking it much more!
Nancy rode the ONE 9'5 and caught her 1st waves since shoulder surgery.

As usual... people stopped by us to ask about the boards  :)

Later, I dropped by Freedom Surf Shop to visit with Dave and Doug and shared some surf stoke. They have a great shop, so if you are in Virginia Beach, make sure to stop by and check out some Sunovas!

After a great dinner last night at an awesome creekfront venue, we spent Saturday night broken down on the highway into Atlantic City (not my van)
Always something interesting to experience on the road  >:(

It was great to meet Rick (creek) Tino and his son Nalu at Jim K' place (Extreme Windsurfing) on Sunday.  I really missed seeing the rest of the local Zoners on Saturday but a vet appointment (no-worries, just a wellness visit) got in the way.  It was a blast watching Nalu rip it up on the Onewheel on Jim K's boardwalk, and then later on a SUP...remarkable balance!

Rick had his van full of Sunova boards of all types and sizes; what an awesome opportunity to try a few out.  The winds were blowing on shore, but it was totally surfable.

The big surprise for me was the 8'10" x31 1/8" flow.  At 210lbs plus wetsuit, this board felt remarkably stable paddling out through the chop.  And once on the wave, like a time machine, it transported me back to my short board days!

Also as a side note, I gained some new appreciation for the LiftSup handles.  They really came in handy moving the boards back and forth from the van to the beach in the 15-20mph on-shores.

I REALLY regret not getting out with you guys it would have been a blast but in my current condition that looks like a couple of weeks away...Creek Tino and Nalu were a blast (although Nalu told me he doesn't like America food ...He's 9)

Already looking forward to Creek's next visit

Creek,
Your tours look like so much fun and a great way to share the stoke! Any plans to turn it into a 'Grand Tour' and bring the tour over to the UK??!!

Hey Guys-

First- Thanks to Jim K, Supthecreek, Kliss99 and the 'guests' that made the Saturday Demo awesome. Bummed I didnt get to meet zoners Bean and Surfercook who i think came day 2.  Next time.

I wanted to share a quick review of my experiences- Mostly because demos like this really, really are beneficial for the Sup Community.  Many of us don't have access to demos- and taking 2k plunges on sight unseen boards are really tough- and any time there is info out there on a board it helps (although all should be taken with a grain of salt...including this one) So hoping i can pay it forward for STC and Jims hospitality.

Me: 40 Y/O , relatively athletic, ex football player build, (5'10 210) everyday board is a 119L Riviera El Tigre Wide 8'2 x30.5- comfortable Guild factor (I just learned this term) is 1.25 - smallest board is 1.05-1.1 depending on wetsuit. (95k / 119l or 95k / 105l)

Boards I rode:

First off the conditions really didnt cooperate.  it was waist high with some chest sets- but really really messy and onshore.  Probably the sloppiest conditions i would consider surfing in if it wasnt a demo. So all reviews should acknowledge that the conditions we not ideal at all.

first Board out: 9'1 Acid.

This was the board I cant to demo.  My 119L 8'2 really isnt long enough and too wide for Jersey hurricane and storm swells (Chest+)  I've been really considering a board like this for NJ Winter since i snapped my 8'8 x 29 El Tigre. I took it out first because I knew it would take a ton of effort to ride in these conditions....iT DIDNT!

I was hugely surprised how stable it was.  the whole 'secondary stability' thing really worked on this thing.  I got 4 or 5 good waves and the board ripped.  the teeny tail spun around as fast as my 8'2.  It was a pleasant surprise and I could feel my better financial judgement going out the window the more I rode it.

2nd board out: 9'2 Speed.

I wasnt on this board for long as I knew it doesnt fit my style of surfing.  It was definitely a fun board. and I wont go to into it as I think there are dozens of reviews that capture how it rides well.  It really doesnt turn from the middle as many had mentioned- but moving around on the board a little (See STC's vides) made it tons of fun.  again- im not a board walker unless im on a longboard- so fun- but not for me at all.

3rd board out: 8'5 Speed.

Yeah- Choppy, 210lbs, McDonalds on the road for breakfast and 112L. I paddled this thing right back in.  Barely could stand in the conditions.  I think it might have been less stable than my 105l Hypernut.

4th Board- 8'3 Shroom

Ok- heres my biggest revelation.  1.  this board is WEIRD. two center fins, a concave Deck (felt like standing sideways on an old snowboard with cant plates).  super strange and total novelty when i first saw it.

oh man...I spent the rest of the day on this thing.  I wrestled it away from Jason from Extreme Windsurfing a few times!  it took about 15min to get used to the domed deck- but the long rolly choppy waves (we dont have them in North NJ- more steep barrely waves) this board really shined- I was catching everything, the board would turn on a dime on the two center fins, and surfed great off the tail.  It was a better bigger version of my hypernut. (which frustrated me)

I havent had much experience with Simmons, squared off shapes- but as an old surfer who was very leery of them.  The shroom was a BLAST.  Its a quiver board for sure. But for the conditions it was very very fun. The shape works.

all in all- It was a great day.  of course i LOATHE the liftsup handle. and this is my biggest argument on these boards.  I also hate the deckpads that are several pieces. (and in wird places where you stand and surf from.  - either have a deckpad or dont...

the board sin the xxxtech were all super light- and full disclosure I do have a 10'6 Sunova Style longboard and its the only board I havent repaired in that last year.

again thanks to all the guys involved in the demp. I have no affiliation with sunova- but do have a respect for the time that STC and JimK put in helping guys like us out to learn and progress. (On Sunovas and other boards)

Also forgot I rode the skate (think it was 9'1 or so) I really did like that board. Slow sluggish and really didn't do anything particularly well. A rare miss shape from the Sunova guys in my opinion

Ha ha... I wish!
I'd love to go back to the UK with a lorry full of Sunova's..... so many beautiful spots to visit and surf with so many forum friends!

JimK folks:
I had such a great time with you guys, that was an awesome day!
When I got to the beach at 7 am, it was shrouded in morning fog... so very cool looking!

A computer glitch delayed my picture post of the day... but as they say "late sucks... but it's possibly better than nothing"
I love the crew in Jersey.... a bunch of talented surfers and great guys!

Thanks to NorthJerz, Kliss, Bean, Michael, Jason and a the Zone guest who all came to play.
These guys all surf very well and, as I always find about Zoners I meet... really fine people

Unfortunately Bean missed the rest of you folks, but had the beach all to himself!
Stoked to finally meat you Bean... it was truly a pleasure!

I'll be back to JimK's again later this summer.
