Title: portable showers for my SUP
Post by: Larry2c on April 03, 2017, 04:48:51 PM
I've see someone with the Rinseskit down at the bay washing his board down and I really like the idea of rinsing my board before I put it up on the rack and drive home. The Rinsekit isn't terribly expensive but there are other similar products out there for about half the price. One thing I noticed is that most of those have a "dish sprayer" type nozzle and some of the complaints in reviews were about the cheap nozzles.

So my question is, is the Rinsekit worth the extra $45 or should I buy the less expensive version and share my savings with friends, a few burritos and some cold beverages?

Rinsekit https://www.amazon.com/Rinsekit-Mens-One-Size-Black/dp/B00UGA4DRA?th=1&psc=1 (https://www.amazon.com/Rinsekit-Mens-One-Size-Black/dp/B00UGA4DRA?th=1&psc=1)

BTW, what's the trick to getting a word to be a hyperlink? Usually I just highlight the word, hit Insert Hyperlink and paste in the url. That didn't work here...

I just bought one and used it for the first time.. It can be seen at the end of this vid.. It's a quality product and well worth it imo.. It's much better than sloshing water around out of a container like I used to do.

Thanks for the feedback folks.  So addapost - do you have one of these tanks? I have used weed & bug spray tanks for garden use and they all put out a great mist but not something I would think would be good for washing down my board. I see some of the tanks come with different tips - is that the difference?

David - I take it the Rinsekit uses the pressure from your hose bib at home (or wherever you hook it up). Does it say anything about max pressure for filling? I ask because my front yard hose bib is on the street side of the house pressure regulator so it has a lot of pressure - I've blown a couple of cheap lawn sprinklers up hooking them to this hose.

I just upgraded to the Rinse Kit from one of those Deck and Home sprayers. The rinse kit is definitely much better. But I'm only getting about 2 minutes of spray in the shower mode. Enough time to wash off board and myself. I'm trying to figure out how to get more water pressure in the rinse kit. Maybe my faucet has weak pressure.

Or just use gravity.

And when it's empty it takes almost no space. Under $10 at Walmart. I lost the one I had somehow but am going to get two of them this week. Fill them up before I leave with hot water, leave in the bed of my truck....it will almost be too hot on a sunny summer day and even stay warm on a cool day. With 5 gallons I had more than enough to rinse me and my board, 10 will cover the family too.

True enough. My racks weren't high enough. (You truck guys sheesh) ;)

Xterra has one on sale right now. Go sign up for their mailing list and they have a cool olive drab one for $15 or something. Check it. But I agree with Creek. It can be simple.

I've been using this one for years.

In the winter I fill it up with hot water and wrap a towel around it. Stays hot for about three hours.

I've been using one of these for a couple years in my van.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00WWNJVHQ/ref=pd_aw_sim_86_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=HNVP999DQK144V8AP77S&dpPl=1&dpID=51LAy7K53cL

5 gallons and has enough enough pressure to blow the sand off the boards, dogs, etc. I also use it for showering and washing dishes. Since it's inside my van all the time the water is pretty warm, which is nice after peeling the wetsuit in the not always warm PNW.

It's built strong enough to handle the pressure.  It's a good design with quality fittings.  The directions say to fill for 30 seconds.  I go over a minute until the pressure equalizes to get max pressure and volume of water.

30 seconds might be a good limit for you if your water pressure is extra strong, but I doubt anyone's house pressure is strong enough to damage this thing.  I've had it apart and looked inside the top cover.  Plastic is super strong stuff, this thing is rugged.

It's enough water for quickly rinsing a board your body, but, if you really have a mess, you may want more volume, like JP4.

But the rinse kit is a very handy size.  Perfect if I go somewhere without a good outdoor shower.

Yes LPB, few houses go to the 65PSI that they recommend.

I might be in the minority here, but I rarely ever rinse my boards off.  Probably because I do a huge percentage of my paddling very close to home.  After a surf or a paddle I carry my board right to the car.  By the time I get there (200yds), it's dry enough to go right on to the rack without a problem.  In over 40 years of doing this the same way, I've never had any car rust issues or board degradation issues as result.

Now, wetsuits are a different matter, they get washed and air-dried every time.

The stock-plastic back bumper of my Wrangler actually holds 7 1/2 gallons of water, so I could make a nice gravity fed foot bath or maybe add a 12v wash down pump some quick-connects...

I've been happily using a 5 gal plastic can (says "Kerosene").  Fill it with hot water from the laundry sink in the winter, outside from the hose if not.

In November, my wife got me a Rinsekit as an anniversary present.  Pretty neat gizmo, but honestly a very elegant solution to a problem I didn't really need fixing.  That said, I use it every day simply because my wife worked hard at thinking about my passion and getting me something I didn't have.  It is well made and I end up using much less water than I typically would.  Much nicer than lifting up 5gal over my head after a long session, but I still keep the can in the truck as I often have just barely enough water to rinse everything down.

That said, I sure like JP's solution.  If the Rinsekit dies, that's what I'm getting.

I don't know about other places but the two homes I've owned in the San Diego area had one hose bib that was on the street side of the pressure regulator - and that thing kicks butt!

Regarding some of the other examples shown - geez Tom, that rig looks like it has more water than my house water heater! I've seen the Helios on Amazon but a lot of the reviews beefed about the nozzle and cheap construction. I think I can order one through Home Depot so maybe that would let me look at it before buying it.

I just want something that has a decent spray and hold 2 - 3 gallons of water. The bug sprayers might due but all the ones I had were pretty anemic.

Here's my street side hose pressure - after the regulator it drops to 70 psi

WHAT? A hose connection on the street side of the regulator? No backflow prevention? You could actually hurt someone with a hose connected to unregulated pressure in some cities.....great for washing your car though..... :o

Lots of houses around here just like mine in that regard - and I never thought about the back flow issue. Maybe they handle that out at the meter?

It does do a heck of a job on washing things off though!

The hose bib in my driveway was set up before the pressure regulator. When washing my car, if I shut the water off on the hose at the sprayer, the hose would expand to look like a python that just ate a pig. Had it changed.

I bought a rinsekit--rarely use it. I prefer a two-gallon cooler jug full of hot water. The problem with the rinsekit is that you're filling them with cold water. Not a biggie in Maui, but in San Diego this winter it was Shrinkage Ville.

They don't last very long either. Of course what I need to do is solve the problem for real. Sling-mount a long tank under the rails of my rack. I'm thinking ten gallons, flat black, and a heater element from a motor home hot water heater. Done and done.

Or maybe an RV gas hot water heater in a box with a water tank and a propane bottle. Yeah, I know, big sissy. You can call me that while I'm taking my warm showers on a 40 degree day.

10l Dromedary bags. I use them for all my water carrying needs be they hiking, paragliding, SUPing, or whatever else.

If I'm going to SUP somewhere that doesn't have showers I just fill a couple from the hot water tap and they're still toasty after a couple hours. They're not the cheapest, but they're so multi-purpose that I've never needed anything else. 2 of these and a Camelbak will pretty much get you through any adventure you want to embark on.

SaMoSUP,
FYI.  Rinsekit website says that you should get 4 minutes of spray time, depending on the pressure of your water source.  Also, there are supposed to be 7 different sprayer settings. If it is not holding pressure, see the video on the site FAQ.  Just need to check and tighten all of the various hose the fittings.  Sometimes they are loose from the factory.

Pono,
FYI, Rinsekit holds two gallons and they sell a hot water adapter.  See the website FAQ.  Just sayin'.

I'd need to make or buy an adapter for a hot water connection--much easier and cheaper to spend a week or so and a few hundred bucks for materials to build something myself.

Yeah, okay, I might be wrong about that.

For reference, I rarely fill my 5gal over half full. I use a sink sprayer and usually have water left over. (I don't spray my boards either)

Let me tell you, nothing endears you to even the hardest core shortboarder like giving away the end of your hot shower on a cold day.

I found this interesting from the RinseKit FAQ,  "in the near future we will be offering the ‘Field Fill Kit’ which will allow you to fill the RinseKit with still water and quickly pressurize the system with a standard bike pump."

Apparently with the "kit", the RinseKit will actually work more like an irrigation pressure tank.  The existing internal water bladder will be surrounded by pressurized air which in turn could be regulated with an air pump (electric or manual).

Hah, yes, so true! I always offer up my sprayer to whoever is parked next to me at the beach. Not many people turn down a warm shower after getting out of their cold, salty, sandy wetsuit.

I've used a RiseKit for a while now and had made my own adapter for my kitchen sink to be able to fill it with Hot water in the winter, it's been great, never any issues and I have always managed to rinse off fully and still have water left to share or rise of my board and wetsuit/booties/gloves.

I'll likely pick up another one for the extra water for when we have the nasty red tide (Newport, RI).

Comes in handy for many other things (camping, watering inside plants, etc)

Post by: Bulky on April 05, 2017, 11:00:25 AM
I plumbed a hose bib off the hotwater supply to my laundry sink and put the Rinsekit adapter on there so I've got a dedicated hot water feed.

I have thought often about the tank under my roof racks, but then there'd be challenges of filling it (need to uncoil the hose--hot water even harder), making sure the truck isn't sloped the wrong way and then everything I'd want to rinse would have to be close to the truck.  A little mobility is necessary.  Another pretty cool solution, but not without it's own inconveniences.

Got the rinsekit rigged but if it ever breaks, I'm pretty sure I'll just go back to the 5gal jug.  Easy to fill and mobile.

Ok, that BigKahuna looks like the ticket. When mine breaks I think that's what I'll get. The 8 gallon size should last a whole weekend at the beach. The components look more durable than the unit I have.

Pono, you made me laugh - Shrinkageville! I guess if I was wanting the sprayer to wash me down, I'd be worried about that issue but I just want to hose down the board before putting it on my rack. Keeps the salt from crusting up on the board or maybe worse, dripping into the truck. Crusty skin doesn't bother me that much and a nice shower when I get  home is better than a teaser at the beach.

I found this "portable pressure washer" on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017C65CXE?psc=1) that works well, and I like that I don't need a pressurized hose bib to fill it from.

(https://i5.walmartimages.com/asr/8fd13995-1fe4-4aba-85cc-96298ce0f0e3_1.63202e7659724b5d7abacd40338e8b6a.jpeg?odnHeight=450&odnWidth=450&odnBg=FFFFFF) (https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81u%2BqzoUgGL._SX466_.jpg)

Unscrew the cap, fill with whatever temp water you like, and off you go.  At the beach, plug it into your cigarette lighter, and shower away.  For the extended days, sessions, friends on the beach, I bring an extra 5 gal. jug of water to refill when empty, and away we go....showers for everyone!  Best $100 I spent...no with the water/showers shutoff statewide for the most part.  >:(

I think the original fitting is for an outdoor spigot. An adapter is required to attach to an indoor fawcet, which would have hot water available. Well worth $15.

It's actually an indoor faucet adapter that screws in place of the aeration screen. Assuming your faucet has one. Fifteen bucks is a little steep, but worth it for hot water if you already have a rinse kit. I do, and I ordered one. I didn't order the refill kit--40 bucks for a water bag and bicycle pump adapter. I don't need the bag, they won't sell the pump adapter separately. A bit aggressive on making bucks from add-ons. I already ordered the home depot shower. I like the simplicity and versatility of that design. And I can use any size container. I have a good cooler that I cobbled up a clamp to lock it in place in my pickup bed. I can fill it with hot water from a hose tap in my shop--I have hot water/cold water tap system in my shop. Great for washing cars. If I get the floor cleared enough I can wash my truck inside--the floor has copious drain channels. If I'm in a hotel I can dump buckets of hot water into the cooler. I'm McLovin' this.

I generally stand in a big plastic storage container to peel my suit, rinsing as I go. I gave up on the RinseKit and used a big Sparkletts bottle in SoCal.  The container winds up partly full of fresh water and my suit, which helps rinse that. Then I pull the suit out and pour the water over my board to get the salt off that before I stick it on the rack. I use whatever's left in the bottle to rinse off the board and truck while the board is on the rack. I don't want my truck to rust prematurely.

But I digress. I think this electric pump might be a much better solution to the somewhat wimpy RinseKit.

I'm just gonna pitch in that you guys are working your ways from simple to complex and are about to lap yourselves back to seeing why I built the one I did.

Big enough, but not too big.

Easy to fill in any sink with hot water.

Pressure and capacity/remaining water are unrelated.

My shoulders have had enough at the end of a session. Who needs to hold a few gallons of water over their head?

I could bring myself to add a battery pack as my car is always right there and I didn't need another thing to forget to charge.

I should make a kit... so I could capture that giant Middle aged SUP guy market.

Walmart sells a garden/bug sprayer for $10 made by Flo-Master. Pump it 20 times and you're good to go. Leave it in the sun while you're out in the water and you can use it for your own shower too. I bought a shower head for it from Flo-Master for about $5.00. It's okay. The tank on mine is black but I guess they no longer make that one.
