Should be some solid, overhead surf on the 23rd. It's supposed to be stormy and windy too though. Max fun. See you in the water.

Right now the forecast is for 20 kt winds, overhead surf and rain on the 23rd.

https://www.wunderground.com/us/ca/cardiff-by-the-sea

Not sure if you have surfed Cardiff before but there is going to be 3 days of run off flowing out too.  If the water smells bad find someplace else.  The bluffs around Encinitas/Solana Beach / Carlsbad are going to be saturated from the rains so keep that in mind too when choosing a spot.

There's potential for a decent day on the 24th. Wind is supposed to be light, surf 4-7 ft. If I surf Cardiff it will probably be more towards Swamis, just to get away from the rivermouth.  Might be a good day for further south.  For various reasons we're going to be renting a house in Del Mar for a week starting next Sunday. I'll be getting in the water somewhere pretty much every day, even if it sucks and storms.

I won't be quite as worried about the skankwater from this coming storm. The nastiest stuff is already washed through, though it still will probably be festive.

Stay in touch Funk. We'll find some way to have fun.

Thx Seadart for the advice ... Yes I am aware of the runoff there and will keep an eye and nose on it and will adjust accordingly ...... Will be snowboarding in Tahoe for the weekend and then heading south ..... We were going to rent boat for Mavs for Sat. but weather forcast looks bad. Looking like some macking waves forcast for up north!!

My first thought was that Friday and Sunday look to have great downwind potential (at least for here), but then I noticed the double overhead surf forecast that goes along with it.  Not a lot of easy entry and exit points in conditions like that.  Guess I'll get some work done in the garage this weekend.

Or maybe back to Mammoth if I can talk the wife into it - getting another 5ft+ of snow this week to go on top of the 20ft they've already seen.  Crazy month up there!

I   just got back   from   Mammoth  last  night .I've  seen  snow  before, but not like   that . Msin lodge has so much you can walk  to  the  upper  deck  without  using  the  stairs

Brown sludge coming out of Cardiff today at 12:20 .  And the rain hasn't kicked in yet.

Yeah, not advisable to surf or even touch that water.   Hopefully, this much rain will begin to clear out all the runoff.  Most rain we have seen in many years.  I hate it, but I love it.

Sunset Cliffs was surprisingly clean with doh and toh sets. Only a dozen or so out at 3 spots. Two SUPers got some bombs

You can't have a thread about Cardiff, without yours truly. :)

I would join all of you for a session, but I am down and out with a broken ankle. A few days after Christmas, my 7'2" JP Surf Slate sup attacked me, snapping my fibula. And I ended up having surgery.

Have fun.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170123/7183327e7667cf0f98ec1432ca16210b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170123/34b9c28b84b2ce451c1233da743b45fd.jpg)

Ouch CSweep!  My wife had a very similar break, and hardware to match, about 2 years ago.  I never realized how much of a hassle a broken ankle could be until those few months.  She was in a boot rather than a hard cast though.  And a knee scooter was the best purchase we ever made - assuming you can't put weight on it for quite a while.

Oh man, sorry to hear that sweeper.  The x-ray looks like one of the screws has come out and is laying sideways.  WUWT?

Ha, that's a screw fastening bone to bone across the break.  Carpenters call it a toe screw!  I'll bet the surgeon's counterbore drill formed  a flat spot (shoulder) for the head of the screw to rest.  I'll bet the threads only engage beneath the break, with a smooth shank above so he can tighten it juuuust so.

Yes it was!

We watched the lone SUS'er (there were two, but only one catching waves) lose his board...
He wasn't wearing a cord  ??? and the wind took his board 30-40' in the air and it came back down 100' south and outside of where he surfaced, then the next wave took it into the cliffs. Lifeguard on Ski picked him up and took him over to retrieve his board.
He paddled back out, where he promptly caught another wave, rode it a couple of sections and got swallowed up and lost his board again. Swam for it, knee paddled back to get his paddle, and did it again. And again.

Digger71 - I saw people over there but stayed at in front of La Jolla shores park. I shouldn't have been lazy & paddled over although I was happy w/ the waves where I was at. Is it all sandbar over there?

SD Surfer - I could barely see the two suppers that were out there. One of them came in around 11am & I asked him how it was. He said he was only on two fins & it was really windy. It looked awesome from where I was.  Is that just right of the children's pool?  Is that all sandbar as well? Thanks for the pics. I was gonna drive over there after I got out to check it out but was too hungry & headed home.

On big fun days at La Jolla/Scripps, it's always fun to see the big waves they catch & wipe out on. Saw some great rides & nasty spills.

Nate, the guys you talked to is probably the guy in that first pic I posted. I never did see him catch a wave.

The Children's Pool is probably 200 yards south... Boomer's is in between, Bodysurfing Mecca.

I can't speak to the bottom outside, but everything I've seen in the Cove & sea cave area is reef, rock, and Kelp forests, with patches of sand here and there. No sandbars til you get over to the Marine Room.

If I weren't injured, I'd have taken a shot at it out there. Ends up petering out into deep water. Easier said than done.

WOW! Impressive LaJolla Cove and screw job to the ankle! When I visited Blacks I gazed over at La Jolla and remembered all the photos I'd seen over the yrs of it breaking. That looks a bit outa my skill set. That bailout looks terrifying!

Yep, those are the moments when you start re-thinking a lot of your life choices.  ??? I surfed the Cove twice when I was young, dumb, and full of... ummm, enthusiasm... and thought I had to prove myself.
It's really kind of a mushy, slopey faced wave, and while it's technically not a really difficult wave to surf, it can really mess with your mind 'cuz you know the Cove doesn't even break unless it's huge, and there's A LOT of water moving.

FYI, while we were standing at the Cove, every so often we could see some major mountains of water at Blacks.

I went to Scripps this afternoon, sat in the car for about half an hour looking at the water trying to find something that made putting on my wetsuit in 45 degree weather worthwhile. Didn't see it. I kind of regret not going, I'm sure I would have had some fun, but it was pretty much nothin but whitewater.

Rub it in, Dog.

I had a good session this morning until my paddle snapped. I suspect it was pre-broken in the back of the truck, I think my bike rack fell on it. It felt funny on the paddle out--I thought it was just odd current. But when I went for a particularly big wave--snap.

Had to drive back to Canyon Lake to get a replacement shaft and some spare paddles--I only brought one. As it turned out it was a good thing I went. the Trout's dock had risen above it's anchor posts and moved enough to one side so when the lake level came down the post jammed under the dock, and it was starting to tilt. Got that sorted out, but by the time I got back to Cardiff the wind was on it.

At least Surfline acknowledged that the SUPer was "ripping"  That's more acceptance than I have seen on Surfline.

So just got home to NY and had a crazy awesome trip!!! Alot of too much (snow, rain) and too big (waves at times). Arrived in SF 19th we were suppose to bike from Montery to SLO  and then drive to SD BUT MOTHER NATURE THOUGHT OTHERWISE , landslides and rain cancelled that part and so we drove Tahoe up access road ( lucky we had 4 wheel ) we made it to squaw area at 10pm to see the most snow I had ever seen in my life and was truly amazed. In the am on the 20th... we suited up to snowboard and ski (3 snowboards 2 on skis) We heard there were only two lifts open due to conditions and arrived to the sound of morters going off every 1/2 to cut down avalance potential ( so so sorry to hear that later in the week a ski patrol was killed by explosion) with only two lifts open the wait was 40 min to get on lift and arrived at top to 50 mph winds ..... now as a east coast snowboarder the depth of the snow made for a tuff learning curve for power (4 ft deep in places, at times when I fell I could not get up almost like a turtle on my back : ) but started to get the hang a little ..... but we had to flee in early afternoon due to new storm arriving and blizzard conditions, potential power loss and the poss of getting stuck up there .... we headed to SF Ocean Beach slept at friends house woke up to what looked to be 25 ft faces crazy ..... we drove south on a surf tourist drive to see spots along the way Mavs, Steamers and a few other places mostly in driving rain but awesome to see. We then rented RV in SLO to drive to San Elijo state park and hang till sat ..... We arrived on Mon night and awoke to some macking waves with only small crew out at swamis at a few sporatic others out it was a touch out of our league but the park was a great spot!!  We woke on wednesday to super conditions!! at pipes/turtles.... 2 of us on SUP had a great sesh!! And many old friends who moved to cali ( I lived in cali in early 80's) and new friends who lent us boards and other the things to make our trip amazing ( we are firefighters from NY) and several SD FF were super generous!!! with the time and materials (Don and Nate to name a few) crowds got a little tough at times but we made the best of it..... on thursday  we went to del mar to help out with Wounded Warriors ( but did not do much they did not want to put them in water due to bacteria) so we surfed over there in front of life guard shack ......  checked out of park yesterday
