With all the downwinding Vids online, I thought it was time we started focussing on upwinding.. ;).. So here is my first 1 minute upwinding vid on the SIC Bullet 14v1 TWC.
This was inspired by one of my paddle buddies here, who said to me, "I hate downwinding, and am going to organise an upwind race... just for so I can beat all of you downwinding nutters"

Looks like you're got yourself a real good workout going against the wind. Thanks for sharing your video.
-
Yup, upwinding can be the pitts......I can get my heart rate up over 160 in no time going upwind ! :P
-
The wind is a good training partner. That is what I was told.
-
Absolutely stellar upwind conditions.
Ya think it's the next big thing?
-
I like the angle of the mount you are using. By stabilization, do you mean you are using a gimbal? Is it waterproof?
Where did you get this setup?
More information please!
-
Well, yeah. Great workout, great training, great mount, and perspective but I just think of this.

This brilliant off-shore! Upwind is such a crucial aspect of paddling and the technic involved is a difficult skill to master. I need to see more paddling
against the bumps though, this is where it really gets interesting.
You should have told me you're doing that, I had a prefect 5 mile upwind
today (on my way back from a downwind session). I could have had some
footage to show (with bumps and all) ;)

Crazy as it seems - we do that a lot here. 2 miles straight upwind and 2 miles DW. Really helps with pull strength and cardio conditioning especially when there are whitecaps. Do it until you get tired right out - and both your flat water speed will benefit - and your DW balance skills as well. Your endurance will improve dramatically and you will not fatigue like before. Really helps a lot actually - and your technique gets better and better. Go narrower and narrower as well. ;)

Robert, This is a Sail Systems Pro 3rd Person View Lite https://www.sailvideosystem.com/collections/all-products/products/3rdpersonview-lite, with a set up that I have worked out over the last few years, coupled with a GoPro Hero 5 using the SuperView Setting and with Image Stabilisation switched on, that changes the FOV back to Wide. I'm actually very impressed how well this works out compared to the GoPro 4 Black without the image stabilisation. I did not do any post production stabilisation..
Normally I'd just cut this upwind footage out, but when I was skimming through, I saw this and thought... Wow.. That's pretty amazing... I have two downwinding vids shot on same day I am working on.. Here are some stills..
But seriously... more upwind vids please... ;D
-
Haha!
That GoPro 5 has GPS overlays you can add now. ;)
-
Yep. Paddle against the wind, waves, marine life.
And then the reward! Whooosh! The poor man's down chopbreezewind THANG!
-
Thank you for the link, that's a cool mount and the image stabilization is pretty good.
I'm still waiting for a waterproof gimbal, does anyone know if one is available?
-
Great video and visibility shirt. I do a lot of upwind in order to downwind, sometimes several times in a session. Some tips on upwind that I've learned over the years..
-super short quick strokes - longer your paddle is in the water you're being pushed by the wind
-if super strong (over 20kts) get low - kneeling is common but still a sail. Sitting kayak style using single blade or full paddle kayak style, or prone. Helps save those shoulders and keep you in training if you brake/lose a paddle.
-
My favorite workout...1 hour pounding against the wind.....for a 5 minute downwind run. I find that if I get my stroke cadence to match the chop and with the focus that is required for me to stay upright in it I can get so zoned out I lose track of time.....suddenly find myself far further out than planned.
-
Good stuff offshore, I like the idea.... thinking outside the box!
A great way to improve your skills and fitness... why not create a buzz about it!
Sometimes the wind blows so hard you miss a paddle grab or can't push the blade into the wind fast enough.
-
Thanks for all the comments. This is quite an unusual upwind as it is quite sheltered and the water is fairly flat. In these conditions I actually use long and deep paddle strokes and crouch right down at the end of each stroke. I find this to be lower energy and more effective than using shorter higher cadence strokes in these flat conditions.
However as soon as there starts to be any waves coming at you (as in going upwind in downwind conditions) it is a different situation and the shorter higher cadence strokes are better. I'll aim to do a vid going upwind in bigger conditions to see if I can show how the technique differs.

Slick makes a good waterproof gimbal at a reasonable price - $239. https://www.slick.video/products/slick Good mounting systems, and self-contained. Not shipping until March, but it's been reviewed quite a bit and the design looks excellent.
OS--You might try feathering your paddle. It's good practice to feather every stroke, I do it with my lower wrist and it makes going upwind a bit easier--you can recover the blade faster, with less effort. The sooner your get the blade in the water, the less the wind slows you.

Seems like the Slick and Sybrillo are the gimbals claiming to be waterproof, and both are hoping to ship spring of 2017...
-
Thanks Ponobill and Clay, I was not aware of these new gimbals.
The slick says snow and rain proof, not waterproof while the Sybrillo claims it's waterproof:

Good to see these will be available soon, probably the second generation will be better and cost less.

Good stuff, sure ll ofus need to get skillsupwinding.
On my spots around home,we get some river channels where SW winds blow in, when tide against wind, that creates funny bumps for Dowwinding, game is doing several up/down wind runs of about 2/3 mile. Thanks to the current,I have been unwinding against 3,knots, above that force, if current doen't help, I go backwards.
2 things help,in my feeling:
1- a shorter paddle shaft and a quick stroke, stronger when passing wave crest.
2- if wind not exactly against,a fore daggerboard that I remove when down winding. It stabilizes course and board.

Okay here is the 2017 Starboard Ace 14 x 27" going upwind for one minute in slightly more challenging conditions than the Bullet in the vid at the start of this thread.. Definitely easier than the Bullet in these conditions but not as easy as a piercing race board..

Great to see these two vids Burchas. Looking forward to seeing other boards being upwinded!

I'll echo that OS. Next one on the list is the SIC dugout?

Looking at your Ace video It seems you had somewhat hard time keeping the rhythm going
with this board in comparison?

The conditions in the Bump Rider vid were a little windier but the Ace definitely tracks better into wind that the Bump Rider or Bullet. The better tracking and also the better wave piercing ability of the Ace makes it easier to keep up the cadence.

Yes, when I paddled next to you on the Ace and me on the Bump Rider, it was obvious that the fat round nose of the Ace was superior for punching through chop going into the wind.

Robert, I'm looking forward to riding the first dug-out style board from Blue Planet then!! ;D

Hey guys, first post on SUPZONE! Here is a freshwater perspective on up-winding on the same SIC bullet 14 (apologies for the shakiness on the hip cam). For those who haven't upwinded on freshwater, the distance between freshwater wave crests is much tighter = more waves to paddle through. I agree that the nose of the SIC tends to wander in heavy upwinds, but the increased rocker is perfect for the tight freshwater waves of my lake (Lake Champlain). The first part of these vids has good upwind footage.
