Title: Been watching 4k streaming you tube surfing on new monitor
Post by: SUPcheat on August 28, 2016, 07:16:29 PM
In Santa Cruz, I have been using a very nice Vizio E series 1080p 42 inch monitor in my tiny lion's den as both a media monitor, gaming monitor and computer monitor. I sit about three feet from the screen in an easy chair and use a small bluetooth keyboard. Being that close makes it a "big screen" experience.

I decided to treat myself to a Sony XBR43X800D 4K monitor.  These things look great in the demos at the store, but they are hard to watch because the demos are repetitive and you are constantly pestered by sales people.

The monitor has streaming you tube in 4K, and I have been watching some of the surfing vids and it is amazing to watch.  The upscaling from 1080p is also amazing, and playstation 4 just got a new lease on visual life with the new monitor.  The Vizio was great, but this thing is another dimension. I can't believe the colors and the detail in this thing.

Don't let anybody tell there is no difference in a small tv between 1080p and 4k, the difference is amazing.

I haven't been able to stop watching all the 4k you tube surfing videos.

Yep, it's incredible what you can get now. I got my kids (hah, that's my story anyway) a 65" 4k smart tv for Christmas last year that's used exclusively for Netflix, Amazon, and YouTube. No cable or Sat. The amount of programming available at 4k now is impressive as is the smooth upscaling. Incredible what $1400 gets you now. Wth a good sound system I find it's a much more immersive experience than going to the theatre.
I love how the YouTube WSL channel shows every round of every contest as well as the Big Wave events. They're very professionally done.

I was watching the 4k yousetubes feeds of Peahi and the drops on that huge wave.  The 4k really lets you see the violence of the drop and the board judder.  Even though the figures are small on the screen with 4k, you can really see and feel it.

Even without 4k material, though, the upscaling to 4k from lower resolutions is pretty spiffy.  Even 1080p somehow has a lot more visual information than a 1080p screen can show, and the 4k brings it out, and things look very smooth.

I remember the first time I saw 480i upscaled to 480p.  That slightly blurred interlaced picture somehow became smooth and detailed.  The effect is similar to 4k from 1080p, though probably not as dramatic.

As a computer monitor, the text is perfectly smooth, now, no pixellation effect at all that I can see.

The Playstation games also show a lot of little details  that I was not aware of before.
