Title: 9-10 Ripper
Post by: Blane Chambers on January 25, 2009, 09:47:23 PM
As the owner of PSH and the designer of the 9-10 Ripper I am very proud to say it freaking RIPS!      Will try a couple other fins setups so I can be sure I know how different setups feel for recommendations in the future...    But yeah...   Stoked! 9-10x28-5/8"x4-3/8"

This board will allow for serious bottom turns in critical waves.   Even in small waves it lets you really lay into it then it projects unreal down the line...

Carries speed nicely so you can crank real turns.

We have the 9-8 Ripper which is just ridiculous too.    For now, I'm in LOVE with this 9-10!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

That board looks so sick.  Austin was showing it to me at your shop the other day and I was really impressed.  I just wish I was good enough to ride one of those!  What was the weight range you had in mind when you designed the 9'8" and 9'10"?

I like that!  Similar looking profile to that smaller one you posted a while back that you had made for Jerry Lopez.  What is different on your new 9'8?

The 9-8 has a little less volume at 9-8 x 28-1/2" x 4-1/4"  The 9-8 is sick too...   I saw Stewart Ferriman RIPPING on it already...

What was the weight range you had in mind when you designed the 9'8" and 9'10"?

I built these for 150 lbs up to 230+ depending on your skill level.   Austin is 230 and is ripping on one.   I saw him glide into a few today that I thought no way he was gonna catch...   These boards are meant for steeper waves that you don't want the nose to catch on.    I have been having fun in mellow waves too but it's not meant for slow mushy waves.

From today...   Lefts and rights just clean and sooo rippable.
Drive down the line...

Backside cutbacks can be done full power and full speed...

Backside in general the board works really good.  Take off late no problem...

Freaking board is sick...   I know this is my company and any time I talk about one of my own boards it will seem like some kind of sales pitch but it really doesn't matter if people buy one or not...    As long as I get to ride it and have this much fun on it, it is a huge success! ;D

just curious, are the rockers on the 9'8" and 9'10" the same?  the last picture is sick!  every time I see that picture, I stare at it for a few seconds... like I'm anticipating that section ahead of you.

Blane,
Let me guess, the 9'10" must be more stable than the 9'6" ripper, easier to catch waves. just as versitile as the 9'6" but just better?
OK  great, now I have to sell my 9'6" to make room, or just add another rack. sounds good I'll just put up another rack, it's a lot easier. See ya soon
                                           Aloha

p.s.   Da pad on dat board....................HEAVY
                                                                          NUFF ALREADY ;D

Board looks great. Do I see a recessed handle in the deck?

Blane, is it correct the 9-8 and 9-10 are for faster waves and the wider 9-6 more foregiving in slower? I guess the 9-6 is more stable than the 9-8 and 9-10 (with the same fin config) thanks to its width?
On your website none of the new boards are presented. What boards are available between 9 and 10 feet?
How does the 9-6 wide behave on a bigger wave? Can you still do drawn out bottomturns with comfort?

Well, here's a little floater on a little left this morning... Frame#153

Not that impressive but oh well...  Exactly 2 seconds later Frame #154

They are very similar...

It's a prototype handle from Surfco.    Just a basic stick on that works well...   Solid and kinda flat.

Yes, I made the 9-8 and 9-10 for steeper faster waves.  9-6 Wide Ripper works good in faster waves too.
9-6 WR is more stable than the 9-8 or 9-10.
9-2AA, 9-3 Ripper, 9-6AA, 9-6WR, 9-6WAA, 9-8 Ripper, 9-10 Ripper, 10'AA
9-6WR likes bigger waves too.   Mel Pu'u's favorite board
Yes..

Backside cutback with Occy Sides and 6.5 Flex Center.

Sunny Sides with 5" Center...   This wave was faster so I guess not a fair comparison.   Over all I like the OCCY sides with 5" center mid box...

Mats. /JB

Hi Blane,
re: "Yes, I made the 9-8 and 9-10 for steeper faster waves.  9-6 Wide Ripper works good in faster waves too.
9-6 WR is more stable than the 9-8 or 9-10.
9-2AA, 9-3 Ripper, 9-6AA, 9-6WR, 9-6WAA, 9-8 Ripper, 9-10 Ripper,
9-6WR likes bigger waves too."

I guess that the 9'10" with its extra length will paddle into waves easier than all the others mentioned above?
I only weigh 73kgs (161 lbs), but want something with a bit more glide that still rips, as my 9'8" Starboard has given me a sore left shoulder (I'm a natural-footer). Want to surf the steeper faster waves we get in the south of Western Australia, but still have fun on the small slow fat ones here in Perth.

Slightly narrower also usually equates to better glide, no?
My 9'8" is 30" wide (very stable). It gets onto a wave easier than the 9'6" WR (only had a short surf on the 9'6"). You mentioned above that the 9'10" is 28 & 5/8", but on your website it says 28 & 3/4"? What width are the current 9'10's, & do they all come with recessed handles?
Thanks!

Hey Mollydooka, get a 9 3 ripper. I am 83 kg and use it in everything from 1 foot to triple overhead on one of the Bombies here in Sydney. It handles the lot.

My mate is your weight and started on the same 9 8 starboard but found it too hard to turn so sold it and got the 9 3 ripper as well.

I reckon the 9 3 is great for bigger waves in OZ as it has great paddle speed and never 'tracks' coming off the bottom. The Hawaiian guys use em at Pipe and Chopes so that says a lot.

thanks Goatman,
I was going to go shorter, but my dilemma is that I've buggered my left shoulder from paddling too hard on the 9'8" SB (I think), & after having a go on some shorter boards: 9'4" JL Shredder, 9'6" Laguna Bay (both 28" wide) I've decided that I want the bit of extra glide & extra stability that the longer board offers. Apparently the 9'10" R is less stable than the 9'6" WR, but I found the latter harder going getting onto a wave than the 9'8" SB.
Trying to work out a compromise: something that paddles as well as an 11-footer, but surfs as well as a 9-footer, if such a beast exists!!! ;D

Here's the dilema with having a lot of boards in your line.      Making a decision.     If I had to have a board between the 9-10, 9-6WR or the 9-3 Ripper I'd take the 9-10.     Reason is it paddles faster than the other 2 and it rips too.      If the waves get big you can charge on it.      If you throw the 9-8 Ripper into the mix well, that thing surfs soooo well it'd be all about getting into specifics.

Most stable side to side:  9-6 WR, 9-10 R, 9-3 R
Most stable over all:  9-10 R - 9-6 WR (Tie) 9-3 R
Fastest paddler: 9-10 R, 9-6 WR, 9-3 R
Best all around small to medium performance surfer:  9-3 R, 9-6 R, 9-10 R
Best medium to large wave surfer: 9-10 R - 9-3 R (Tie), 9-6 WR

Now if I absolutely had to choose just one board...   I'd still choose the 12' Gun/Ripper... ;)

I've ridden all those boards and own two of them and think the 906WR is MORE stable than the 910-the 910 is longer and narrow and just feels less stable IMO-having said that the 910 has great glide and is still surfable-be a good choice for you MD-a board with glide-so good to paddle and catch waves-but still surf orientated-so you can rip into those waves once you've glided in......  ;D
