Thanks. Not all boards are made the same,  So far Starboard is built pretty solid compared to alot of other boards.

Great work man. Did I see you adding carbon tape to the rails of that starby? If so, was that for repair or reinforcement?

Did you cut it at the rear rail edge or lap it over and sand it?

Thanks. It was just rail protection . That was for Jow Rowan a Starboard Ambassador. He didnt want the look of rail tape so i added Carbon instead. I blended it all in.

That carbon fiber board....wow.  I'm in awe.

(Side note: I think to advertise here you need to be a site sponsor, and I think you'd be the perfect business to advertise; i.e. put pricing on the photos to give us an idea of the cost for repairs.  Nearly all of us can do a half ass job of plugging a hole, what you're doing is art, and where better to find customers than this forum.  I'd love to see your businesss grow, and frankly I think your work is excellent.  Something to consider.  There's also the part of me that would love to see more of your work, the before and after pics are fantastic.)

Title: Re: Boardwork
Post by: surfcowboy on January 23, 2017, 06:31:26 PM
Just caught up on this. What's the layup like to get that Tuttle to stay put?

Did you cut all the way through the top or did you just drill for the screw and leave the sandwich in place? That seems like it'd be stronger that way, but I really have no idea how a board handles those kinds of forces.
Title: Re: Boardwork
Post by: eDUBz on January 23, 2017, 09:33:46 PM
I was thinking of that - leaving the deck sand which and just glassing in the bottom. I ended up going all the way through on this one.   I'm vacuum bagging 4oz, same layup as Alex does . I most likely have  quiet a few more coming in for installs, (one for sure after this one) and I'll run it by the owner of the next one I do.

No oil misting, if your getting mist you can add a fitting to raise your exhaust.

Good idea. I have one and it mists like crazy. It's under my bench, unused. I could add an oil separator. ( swirl pot) an put to use. Simple fix, I don't know why I didn't think of it.

It's not just the oil misting that sucks with that type pump, but steam from the exhaust takes oil with it. Running the pump out of oil, if you pull vacuum too long.

Joe woodworkers new quiet pump is fantastic. Bill you need this pump. Awesome pump.

So where ARE you located? We have some decent painters here, but your work is the best I've seen. I'm building an electric TR3 that's been painted as part of a failed restoration project--I picked the bits up cheaply. But the paint is shopworn, I've had the thing for more than ten years, moving the parts around from shop to shop.  I might just toss it on a trailer and come visit.

This is what the car looked like when I first put the body onto the freshly powdercoated frame--about ten years ago in my old shop under my home in Portland. Might be longer than ten years, we've been in Hood River for eight or nine years.

Looking at the funky chrome bead strips between the fender and body I'm wondering why I did all the work of installing them. The car looked much better without them. Originality, I guess. I built a very hot street motor for this thing, with a good TR6 transmission and overdrive, Tilton clutch, quaife LSD rear end. Would have been a pretty hot little street rod, but it's going to be fun as an electric board hauler too.

Thanks guys really appreciate all the compliments - never knew i would go this far in the industry and working on some well respected guys and Lady's  in the sport. A lot of time goes into each repair, I was never motivated by money as we have another business that pays the bills ;), only quality and the challenge.  I fell into this after I sold a few kayaks  bought two TAHOE sups that were damaged. I called around looking for a repair guy on stand ups, all the local shops didn't know of anyone in my area, the couple of surf repair guys said they can repair it but not match the
Color. I Made one trip to fiberglass Hawaii got the materials and went to work. I put an add on Craigslist to see if there was a need and there was, here I am almost 3 years later. All my glass work was all self taught in my buddy's back yard 10 years ago, so needless to say I do this as a side gig. I did consider stopping a couple of times but I think I'll be here for awhile   8)

I love it and honestly this is a serious service actually because all of these would be landfill much sooner without your services. This is keeping these boards on the after which is a pretty good thing for the environment long term.

One board fixed is a lot of materials and transport carbon that doesn't get replaced with a new one. Kudos.
Title: Re: Boardwork
Post by: eDUBz on June 08, 2017, 08:00:25 AM
They are still trashing them NEW. I got a call from a customer of mine sayings his brand new SIC Board has a leaking vent plug and if I can fix it - Sure bring it by. A couple days later he said that SIC said they will Warranty it as long as he cuts it into 3 pieces, that's nuts.

Crazy to think that most of these boards can be fixed and people trash them - my question to myself was, who is fixing all these boards and what are people doing with them if I had a hard time finding a repair guys.

This bark Prone got slammed into the rocks 3  times before the owner could get it .
Full restoration with lots of time into it / some things I do out of pure passion and the love of what I'm doing, this board and the story meant a lot to the Owner,

Amazing workmanship. I do a lot of glasswork and fabrication--just for fun and because I break stuff. Sometimes I really give finish work a go, and I've had some decent results. Normally I'm happy with doesn't leak and not too lumpy. Blending and matching takes sooo much time. And I've never had results like yours. Kudos.

Pretty much - these repairs do take time and sometimes I spend too much time on one repair, but it's my name on it and no one else. I'd rather do 1-2 quality repairs over 10 quick repairs.

I think they painted the stringer on that SIC board to imply that the board actually had a stringer, but it doesn't. I've done a few fin box replacements where the graphic stringer isn't actually centered or even straight nose to tail. I put my laser on them and on one board all the fin boxes were shifted 1/2" to one side, and not even aligned with the nose.

Yup! I never go by lines or graphics, it actually makes a bit harder to get everything center. If you notice the original box is not center with the template.

This sic was done for two reasons - the owner wanted more fin options and there was a Delam area right on top of where the new center box is. Check out this pic, it was Dry Stranded glass

Like I've said before...if you ever want to come east for a working vacation I have a great setup for guests...and a nice two car garage with tools....:) Of course if word gets around you're willing to travel you'll have invites to more interesting locales than Plymouth.....unless you have a fondness for the Pilgrims.....:)

I'd love to restore my 12'6" but I simply don't have the skills to do it justice. Sentimental reasons for wanting it restored and not just repaired...It's the board Pono gave me to start this journey.  It needs a LOT of work and I don't know of anyone local doing work at your level of quality. I snapped it years ago and had it repaired...it got stuck together and re-skinned with an additional layer of 6 oz. ...ugly along the break, heavy, and made the board feel horrible. Now a large section of the re-skin on the tail has delammed....:(

One and house and built another in the mountains with some land out of the city and away from the ocean. The closest beach is Oceanside, although I’ve been paddling SD and will be this Wednesday AM. Selling the house and moving away has been one of the best decisions we made,
Although I can’t just take a 5 min ride to the beach I can now ride my dirt bikes and Side by side right out my garage into thousands of acres of Land.  8)

Looking great as always Ricky!

I got a father-daughter SUP in the works. It needs another layer of glass then paint.
Better to:
- finish the glassing and fill coat and then do a PU primer with Montana colors or
- lay the color down first or
-?
Last layer of glass will be 4oz with epoxy going over older epoxy.
We are not matching color or anything, my glassing job is a little tough looking so we need some color for 'pop' and so it does not look post-industrial. Probably mostly the deck at nose and tail and around pad. Think like large bathtub flower stickers...

Thanks!
