Title: SUP Fishing, Bonefish
Post by: krash on June 02, 2016, 01:35:38 PM
For them what don't know, caught a nice BoneFish today, after several powerful runs and a sweet sleigh ride brought landed what we call a big BoneFish.

Nice catch! Bone fishing has to be one of the most exciting and challenging forms of fishing, especially using artificial bait. Bonefish jig?

No I normally target them wit either a DOA shrimp or crab, mainly the shrimp... this trip I had a crab on one rod and my second rod which usually has a top-water dog-walker for general casting at other species. This day I had rigged up for fresh water the day before so it had a bait I would not normally have tied on in the area I was fishing.
The tide was wrong, high and dirty, so sight fishing was not going to work. I normally don't even cast unless I can see and identify a bonefish or permit.
hd spooked a few fish, saw swirls and stirred up mud, so I made a cast or two with that rod, and wham, zing, fish on and after a long first runa dn no jumps I knew it was not a big cuda, would have cut me off, then on its second run I knew it was a Bone... "pumpkin seed zoom fluke"
Unfortunately did not have any more like it in my bonefish box, put on one I had in a much different color and 1st cast 1 bite, 12" cuda, cut off, tried another same thing, stopped casting and started sight hunting again.

Wow, nice fish! That's a big bonefish! A sleigh ride? So that means you were standing on the board when you hooked it? They run like hell as soon as they get hooked so yeah, I can see that. SUPs are great for bonefishing since they live in such skinny water. Way to go!

Yes, standing but a sleigh ride can be had while seated on the cooler had a few of those with tarpon or even a large Cuda.

My canoe can get much skinnier than the SUP but its not as easy to stand in... but once I find the right fin I'll be closer to what I want.
