Title: Bote Boards.
Post by: sxrracer on May 30, 2016, 03:07:23 PM
Anybody have any experience with these.  Picked up a Lowrider today and returned it 5 minutes later.  Had a cracked corner.  Looks like it had been dropped.    Are these boards durable or fragile.

I saw a guy on a lake close by last year. It looked cheap to me. The standing area caved in from the weight of the paddler and it was all dinged up. Maybe they have better quality now. Not sure how the new ones are.

Think there's been discussion on here that they're great boards, but superficially fragile.. gelcoat cracks or sum-in' like that.  But not structurally fragile.

I have a 2016 flood and love it. They are well designed and well built, however, they dont have a good recipe for the paint. It does chip and ding fairly easy. The performance outweighs the paint flaws to me and i knew that going in. When i did a demo on one it got picked up by a 40mph wind gust and tossed down the beach a good ways. The only thing that happened was a small split on a rail. i was expecting much more. They do get a bad reputation for being fragile, but its really just the paint.

I have a Niner brand mountain bike that has same rep.  Paint chips easy.

Yep - when the LBS gives you touchup paint when you buy the frameset, you know you're in trouble. Love the bike tho.

I have a Ahab and HD12, both great boards but yes very fragile.  As long as you don't mind that there really nice board. We have done several 10+ me days with ease. I'd definitely recommend RSPRO and lots of it. I'd cover top and bottom rails with it and you should be pretty good to go.

I'm surprised to hear the Bote Boards are so fragile. There's a veteran attempting a world record paddle on a Bote.

Yea to be honest it's a huge let down. Especially with their price tag. Their design and creative accessories definitely help deal with it. But just a few days ago I got a 1"x1/4" chip on my bottom rail and got to see just how thin the glass really is..... I was shocked to be honest. It's like a thick sheet of paper!  If some other company could make a durable board with Bote features they'd make a killing!!

Yeah the design and thought going into accessories are great.. they just need to be a bit more concerned with durability... even though I know it is just the paint and boats aren't just falling apart.

They are great at the marketing, design, and accessorizing part.. if they just make the outer layer a bit more durable they'd be an even bigger hit.

Thats kind of the difference in say the DragonFly which is a specific design for fishing made like a boat by boat builders and the epoxy/eps boards, the tradeoff is weight. I find most all the SUP's unless roto-molded are rather fragile but repairs are not that hard.

Did that 1"x 1/4" ding penetrate ? Its easy to repair with a little epoxy, even sun-cure will work, unless it ingested water and if its in the painted area that's not so easy to match.

Yea krash there's always trade offs. I have to say if I knew they were gonna be this fragile I might have gone a different direction.

Yes it did penetrate to the foam "not that it took much to do that..." but fortunately it happened out of the water so no water penetration. I put 3m 5200 fast cure on it for now till I can get it professionally repaired. I've glassed for half my life on boats but this is soooo thin and fragile I won't even consider trying to fix it. Honestly if I can get it fixed perfectly I might consider selling it and getting something more durable. It's either that or forget the professional repair and toughen it up myself with something like Linex. I have a buddy that works there who has done several boards,  makes them indestructible and only adds about 5-7 pounds.

I bought a Bote Rackham in March.  I haven't really tested the durability yet.  I mean I've accidentally hit an edge on pavement a couple times walking my board to the launch, but I have tried to baby my board as much as possible out of the water just in case.  I hope I never find out if it really is fragile.  I did put some RSPro rail tape on it.

In the water, I just try to avoid shallow rocky waters.  If I want to get in those conditions I use my cheap Pelican board.  If my fin can touch anything, I don't want to paddle there with my Rackham.  The one moment when I got scared was in a reservoir/lake that was kind of murky, and I didn't see a stump about an inch under the surface until it was too late to avoid it.  Maybe the stump was softer than I anticipated from being waterlogged, or maybe not (I sure felt the hit, it almost knocked me off the board).  After I finished my paddle (10.5 miles that day, the hit was 3 miles in), I looked under the board and could barely even see where contact was made.  It was a very minor scuff mark if that.  Now had I collided with a rock with a edge to it, who knows how that would have gone.  So far I can't complain, but again I am trying hard not to test fate.
