Title: Miles to paddle in 2016
Post by: PonoBill on December 31, 2015, 06:02:59 PM
Bulky's thread inspired me, my resolution this year is to log the miles I paddle and aim for a goal. I have a distinct advantage being retired and living in two of the best places for downwinding, where ten miles a day is pretty easy--it's more or less one downwinder. Of course I don't get to go every day, and there isn't wind every day, but I want to add in flatwater miles too. I need some training time. So my goal for 2016 is 2500 miles. I don't mean to set too high a level and discourage anyone else, I think if you're not living in a wind tunnel then 500 miles is a great goal, and 1000 is pretty amazing in flatwater, but I do live in downwind heaven, so my goal needs to be aggressive.

So put up your number and let's check in every so often. I'm going to use motion-X for the time being.

7 miles average every day for 365 days?

It's not the miles you put in, it's what you put into the miles.

Do 7 miles a day at 90+% of maximum heart rate and I'll be impressed. 7 miles a day at 70% of max HR risks sounding like a person with a lot of leisure time finding something to do. How about training for, and doing, the M2O? That really would be a challenge, and you have all the resources available to you to do it, unlike most of us. Be our inspiration!

I confess that my goal doesn't really require much more than that I do what I've been doing and just be a little more religious about it. I had a lot of double and triple downwinder days at Hood River last year that's 18 or 27 miles a day. You're right, though I honestly think I could do an M2O anytime--just keep paddling. Everyone might be gone home and the lights will be off when I hit the beach, but I'd get there.

I am indeed a person with a lot of leisure time, but I probably go at 80 percent, fifty percent of the time.

I'll be 69 this year. And this year will be training for next year. the big 7-0. If I'm still on the right side of the dirt that's going to be a serious effort to do wacky stuff.

Yes, you are doing extremely well for your age. Who is the oldest person to have done the M2O? That would be quite a title to hold.

Well, I have never tracked my miles but some weeks I get 30 hours of water time. Some of that is standing wave surfing so logging miles of ground won't work. I need a Log of some kind on the hull. I reckon on a river surf session the board must do at least 30 miles on the Plane.

My usually workout run will be at least 10k..

I'd say on any average year I closk easily over 1000 miles but lets find out..

My goal is 2600 miles :)

I'm going for 1,000kms again (around 621 miles). I fell around 100kms short in 2015 after making this in 2013 and 2014.. Too busy with work and kids to do more, so I think this is achievable and a balanced goal.

To be honest - Im not gonna set a goal as it sort of goes against my philosophy a wee bit but I am gonna track my year.

Indeed, goals are always good (show me when it's not?)
I agree with the number 2500 - but I will be using kilometers (that's about 1550 miles).

Most of my paddling currently takes place on flat water, with only about 5% on DW runs.

Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: What's the point of working so hard making money if we cannot enjoy something as wonderful as the ocean?
Title: Re: Miles to paddle in 2016

Goal for me is to try and be in the fullness of every moment on the water. So it is a goal but not a future goal.

I usually go on time not distance.. quite often my entire paddle will be against the flow so too many variables to give an exact mileage but not exact duration.. If the island comes to the paddler not the paddler paddles to the island, then time is distance :)

I could probably set that record, if it's measured at the finish, and I enter the next one to give me enough time.

I'm beginning to think they no longer support the app.  Mine crashed all through iOS 9.1.  Works again with 9.2 but I am up against the 300 track limit.  I could delete tracks but what is the point of the app then?

2500, PB?!?  That's amazing. I'd like to do 1,000mi again, but I'm already thinking El Niño might make that challenging. Only got two days in so far this year due to conditions.

I started keeping a spreadsheet a couple of years ago for my prone surfing with a goal of surfing 100 days a year.

That's decent surfable days, not just paddling out on crappy days that I wouldn't normally surf to get the number.

Surprisingly difficult to do with a full time M-F 7:30-4:00 job, a wife (who while incredibly understanding, also wants to feel like she ranks right up there with surfing  ::)) and all the other "life" stuff and responsibilities of (someone impersonating) a grown-up.

I've yet to make the 100 days, but I did get 100 sessions thanks to some multi-session days.

For 2016 I added columns to the spreadsheet for paddle days, and miles paddled. I figured since we're getting more into the SUP it will sometimes be taking away from the surf tally, and now that I have a good distance board tracking miles will be a good training tool.

I don't think I'll set a numeric mileage goal yet, just curious to see how they'll add up. Given the fact that I still prefer to surf if the waves are good, I'll be pretty happy to paddle a few hundred miles in 2016.

Our group paddles, or paddling with my wife, are more of a sightseeing thing, so I kinda' have to go alone if I want to do any real training.

I did 5.6 miles yesterday in two paddles, sort of following the course of Saturday's Hanahano race, (without the Sea World leg) did 3.15 miles with an average speed of 4.02 mph, and then 2.48 miles with a 3.7 mph avg.

Numbers are not very impressive compared to some of you animals, but I'm fairly pleased with my progress considering I'm both old and new. 53 years old, and only been paddling a year or so. (Prone surfing 40 years)

Last summer we bought a matching pair of 9' 6" Brusurf boards, and thought a mile and half was a long paddle.
Wife said "I want to go faster" so we got her a 12' 6" X 30" Boga displacement hull. I was stoked when I did a 3 mile day on her board.
I recently got a 14' JL Stiletto, so I have a little glide now, and I'm trying to step up the distance and speed. (Gradually, so I can still make it to work on Monday) I actually feel pretty good today. Been playing with stroke technique, moved way up on the board yesterday so I was cutting the water more. I also shortened up my stroke a little more yesterday.
I'm using Runkeeper and get periodic updates on avg. speed, current speed, etc. and it's surprising that some of the times when I'm getting the best numbers is not when I "feel" like I'm going the fastest.

Now I need a new paddle for the new board, my Methane is cut at the tall end of surfing length, so it's tough to bury the blade. If the wife doesn't go I use hers since it's a little longer, but I think it's still short.

I'm off to a terrible start, I don't think I've had a downwinder since I made that commitment. I have a lot of surf days in, but I've just started tracking them and the mileage isn't adding up well. I think tracker lies about total miles paddled. I need to take my motion-X out on a good day.

But I'm still going for it. We'll see.
Title: Re: Miles to paddle in 2016

Total miles in surf is a tricky one.. Im certain the only truly accurate way to measure is with a 'log' on your hull.

Since I posted on the thread, Ive done about 20 -30 miles on stationary waves with ground distance - zero...

On a moving wave, you've got ground speed and hull speed all rolled into one.

Yeah, I'm behind too.  I'm adding this to the list of things we can blame on El Nino.  Just got in my fourth AM paddle this year, bringing my total to 23.65mi--well off the 85mi/mo I need if I'm getting to 1,000mi again.

No complaints from me though when the reason I miss logging miles is due to surf--and there's been a good number of those this year.  We didn't have surf like this last winter.

First quarter check-in (Ugh)--

Conditions, family, work and life have thrown me way off the 1,000mi pace.  Went out on Friday to log a long one just to finally bring myself to 100mi for 2016.

Things are hopefully leveling out a bit for me to get back into a good routine so I can get back to logging miles.  Not beating myself up about it as I've been on the water 28 times--about a dozen of them taking advantage of the surf that's been hitting.  With the weather have come a number of days where it was too sketchy to paddle but not clean enough to surf.

If I get back on pace I'm hoping to still get over 800mi for the year.  Keeping at it!

Without counting miles paddled during surf sessions, my goal is it hit 500 miles paddled before this years CCBC in late August. I'm figuring with multiple 5-10 mile paddles weekly then a bunch of 15-20 milers I should rack up the miles and be in good form and shape for the crossing !!

Between the crazy run of swells we have had in SoCal and the snow that keeps dumping in the mountains, it's been all snowboarding and surfing - my race board is collecting some serious dust!  Even on days I have taken it out I spend a good part of the paddle catching waves on it.  I actually paddled a few miles in the bay recently just to get them in...and I HATE the bay.

First world problems I know, but I need to commit to some miles before heading to Maui for some downwinding or it's going to hurt.

OK, it's 6/30.  Time for a progress check-in on midyear mileage. Set out to try for 1,000mi again this year and was way behind at the end of Q1 with only 100mi logged thanks to El Nino storms and too many days where the surf beckoned.

I'm now at 452mi for the year.

I buckled down and put together three monster months and was able to log over 350mi.  Closed the gap from 150mi down to just under 50.  I know there's a few trips and probably some work/family stuff in the upcoming months that will have me away from the water, but I'm back to having a realistic shot of making my goal.

Keep on paddling everyone!

You can always paddle 150 miles down a swift flowing river on December 31.

Great stuff and great goal but with your efforts and concentration to get yer yaws out (which is great as well) you must now find different routes or extend existing ones or for those 20 July evening paddles you did last year you must now do 23 to get the same mileage. Perhaps a few confused foggy mornings are just what you need.

Good point.  I haven't been able to verify the exact impact of losing the yaw, but I do think I'm getting there faster by travelling in a straight line (duh) and not losing speed due to all of the arcing.  Fortunately, all of my paddles are "out and back" and there seems to be enough of the Pacific left after my usual turn around to extend things a bit.  ;) As it happens, I've actually been on my backup board for the last few weeks during which I was addressing the yaw.  Very curious to get my race board back and have a mirror-smooth speed day to see what kind of speed difference there is--been pretty churned up of late.

I confess I haven't been counting, through I'm racking up the miles pretty well now that the wind is blowing in Hood River. I've also mentally committed to paddling similar distances for conditioning when the wind is calm. Today I did fifteen miles.

OK people--It's September 30th and end of Q3 so time for a progress check.  This morning's paddle brought me up to 741.5mi for the year.  Pretty close to being back on track to hit my goal of 1,000mi this year.

I thought that I'd fall way off pace due to about 3 weeks of travel in July/August, but I guess somehow I got my sessions in.  I was 150mi behind pace at Q1.  Closed that gap to 50mi at midyear and now I'm just 8.5 mi behind--pretty easy to make that up.  Hoping Oct stays mild because if I can get 100mi in that should make things pretty easy.

Keep paddling everyone!

After 12 years of consistently paddling every chance I could, this year life keeps throwing curve balls.

The latest being a trip to the mainland to hang with my son's family near Truckee.  It started off OK.  He planned a camping trip on Emerald Bay, a spectacular appendix to Lake Tahoe.  His son and my Shirley packed in from the highway a few miles above the site and my son brought the lions share of gear in his two man kayak.  I paddled an indestructible SUB to the camp site with my son so we'd have that to play with.  Nice calm conditions for my first fresh water paddle except for occasional boats coming by too close for my liking.  Boat traffic on that lake is like a horde of yahoos.  Anyway we fished that night and caught two just below ten lbs..  We ate well but there were ever present swarms of yellow jackets around our food.  It seemed a peaceful coexistence nuisance where a slight brush away allowed you to take a bite without inhaling a wasp.   He then informed me that it was the biggest outbreak of wasps in years.  I had an allergic past, was nervous, but figured I'd be OK.

The next morning before sunrise we kayaked over to an island in the middle of the bay to take some sunrise pics.  My grandson went SUP and got there before us.  He quickly scrambled up some granite slabs to the top but by the time I was ashore, I couldn't see his path.  It looked a little challenging for my stiff 66 yr old body (first sleep on the ground camp trip in fifteen years) so I began to make my own way.  There was a crevice that had some bushes to grab so I started that way.  Before I knew it, the freaking wasps were covering me and biting.  I scrambled down the hill yelling at my son to come pick me up.  He did but the wasps kept following even out over the water.  He was yelling at me to not tip the kayak over and I was quickly descending into dire straits.

Initially I seemed to recover somewhat to the many bites but the next day I really disintegrated.  My son's pal boated me out and I was in the Truckee hospital by that next afternoon.  Liver enzymes went through the roof.  My pee was as dark as Newcastle beer.  So it's been over 4 weeks since then.

This last week I've paddled with my fellow 66 yr old pals Jimmy and Victor four times, although just short 7 milers.  Getting our kicks on route 66.  The first run had me nervous as to whether I could even make it but things are coming together.  Yesterday from Maliko was actually pretty damn good and I kept up.
But so much muscle and aerobic loss.  It's really frightening how quickly it can happen.

Wow, Bill--read of your bee encounter on FB but don't think I caught that it involved hospitalization, etc.  There's got to be some allowance for recovery there and you can play the "I'm 66" card all you like but I paddled with you--your little 7milers would have most people calling the coast guard.

You'll get there.

I know what you mean Bill. Our Tahoe trip this year had more bugs than I can remember in the 10+ years we've been making the trip. Actually, we saw almost 2 bears a day as well. We've always gone in early August, but because of the kids school year getting shifted we went early July. We attributed the bugs to the earlier vacation time. Unfortunately for you, the bug fest continued. I've been in that little tea house on the Emerald Bay island as well. By the way, Flippy's son Marty says to say hi.. He lives down the street from me.

Wow. That does sound scary. Being miles from anywhere as well. Glad that you are okay Headmount.

I was stung as a child so many times on my face my eyes swelled shut and I could not see for several hours... How did this happen? Because a friend and I decided it was a good idea to throw stones at a wasps nest... and all was fun until they decided enough was enough and the hive emptied en-masse in a huge swarm... and whilst my friend ran, I ended up standing still... Didn't do that again..

I'm a little behind in my 1,000km goal this year, but catching up fast..

First 9 months 2016:
107 sessions,  471 mi,

Not bad for a recovering couch potato. btw:  I cheated, SurfSki and SU combined.

Next year my full time job will be paddling, so double or more for 2017.

I'm at 220km (139mi) so far,  so will probably match my last year of 200 miles.   5.18mph average (with some current), also about the same as last year.  As I get near 60 yr old, and my friends are having joint replacements left and right,  I'll take the same result year to year.

Logging some serious miles, Zoners!  Very envious of some of the speeds out there because my average is 4.3mph.  Some of this is probably due to my daily paddles being open ocean--there's almost always some chop to contend with.  I've also increased my avg distance to almost 6mi and I notice I'm not able to sustain speed that well--the rate on my tracker drops off pretty significantly, especially if I'm going against wind and chop.

Additionally, I'm probably just plain slow.

I've dreamed about being to average 6mph (or even 5.5).  That would translate into a lot more miles in a year.

All righty, Zoners!

With holiday travel coming up, this morning was probably my last session for the year.  Very happy to reach my goal of 1000mi.  Grateful that the benefits go way beyond the physical--I'm pretty convinced that every stroke keeps me sane!

Merry Christmas and finish strong!

Very cool, dude. Congratulations. I didn't keep up my promise to track my miles this year. Maybe 2017 I can get my shit together. I'm doing about 7 miles a day here on the lake, but it's been a weird year. More surfing that downwinders at the start, then tons of downwinders in Hood River. Now not much surf (damn) and flatwater paddling often.

I'd just be guessing, but since I paddle almost every day, and probably average 5 miles or better, I think I'm pretty close to 1000 miles as well. I turn 70 on January 5th. Good reason to count the miles. and I'm training to do the CCBC this August in it's tenth year. time to step it up.

Thanks, Pono!  I'm pretty sure you must have hit it as well.  It's just that I'm kind of neurotic about logging every bit of mileage.  I'm with you on the surf--I think a big part of why I made it was scant few mornings where surf was worth it.  Probably still going to target 1K this year but certainly won't beat myself up if I don't make it because of 30+ surf sessions.

I'm behind again this year.... and won't make the 1,000kms but will do better than last year. And I have not paddled one single day just to get up the miles / kms...

The last 3 years goals and achievements are shown in the 2nd picture... So one out of 4 years is not too bad I guess, with 2 out of 4 over 1,000kms..

OK, I am done for the year.

40 sessions, From January 9 to Dec 24.  No paddling in February. Located Cape Cod MA Every other month though.

202 miles, 325 KM.  Average 5.21mph.  usually 5miles session. With some current assist. Sometimes wind with me, sometimes against me.

Within a few hundredths of last years results.  I still love it!

The last two this year were a little tough.  2 sessions ago no ride back to the car, so locked up board and walked 1.5 miles in my drysuit home.  My wife took me later to get the car and board.

Saturday morning I had a 1 hour tide window, that coincided with a 1 hour no rain window.  So I was out at 7AM in 40F to get to my 200 mile goal.

Banh Pho 14' x 26" Sprinkmaster
Blue Planet Kai Zen 98
Makani Tere 23 fin

Very happy with this combo.  No changes anticipated next year.

2016 was a huge pull back for me.  My graph has really dropped since I moved from near the ocean.  Every trip downcountry is an expedition and sometimes I cancel myself out over thinking when to go, trying to coordinate with pals and staying home too long where I get roped by women to do stuff.

So I'm making a new years res.  Out the door immediately, skip breakfast, eat on the road and get water time where I can find it... right away.

Wind hasn't stopped on Maui and SUS has had very few days.  The harbor is my new terrain.  Uhgg.
