Title: Jimmy Lewis Stiletto
Post by: Muskoka SUP on October 05, 2015, 07:01:37 PM
Just thought I'd share a couple pics of my (wife's) new JL Stiletto 290.  It's a 12-6 x 30" work of art...  And it paddles pretty nicely too! (for a 12-6.. )

Your going to let your wife wear that in public? It's practically a G-string in the shape of a board.

That's a strong relationship.

The Stilleto has a pretty good rocker line. More rocker than I originally thought anyways, and it's a really nice looking board.

Yup.  She's a strong, fit, athletic independent woman.  Besides, it fits her better than it fits me...  ;D

The Stilleto has a pretty good rocker line. More rocker than I originally thought anyways, and it's a really nice looking board.

The rocker is very continuous, typical JL from what I've seen.  Lots of volume in the tail too.  I don't think it has quite the stated volume of 290 litres - my 180 lbs seems to be a touch too much for it.  I have to stand with my toes at the front of the pad to get the tail out of the water.  It's very slippery though, both upwind and side chop.  The low profile nose doesn't catch any wind, and pokes through oncoming waves effortlessly.
All that is moot, however, as it's not for me.  Bonnie is thrilled, as she has been paddling our old SB FreeRace, which although is still a great touring board,  weighs too much for her to be able to easily load and unload from her car without help.  The Stiletto weighs just under 24 lbs.... and the JL sandwich construction is bomber.  To top it off, the finish is stunning.  Ya get what you pay for.  The only thing she isn't thrilled with is the JL shark logo...  ;)

Nice looking board. 24lbs is lighter than I would've thought. Is it carbon?

No, it's the standard JL sandwich... I was skeptical of the claimed weight, until I lifted it, then later weighed it.  It makes you wonder about why other manufacturers can't (or don't want to) do it similarily.  I'm guessing the carbon version would be under 20 lbs...

But like I said above, you get what you pay for, they aren't cheap.  I got this one used (only a couple times by a paddle school instructor who is really more into surfing.  He was meticulous about keeping it minty fresh.  Rail taped, and always in a bag when not in the water.)

My first ride with the Jimmy Lewis Stiletto-14 on the Danube river.
5 km upstream, 5 km downriver.
The first 5 km are about 9 minutes faster than in similar conditions with the SIC Bullet. The Stiletto is slightly more susceptible to current than the Bullet. Probably because of the larger fin and the displacment bow.
In the calm water the board was nice stable even if my bullet appears somewhat more stable.
Anyway, I'm quite happy with the combination of Bullet for wind and waves and the Stiletto for flat water.

Very nice.   Looks like you've got a perfect quiver of two for your needs 8).   Oh, and I like your car too....

Beautiful board... but I could be slightly biased. ;D

You could very possibly lose that board off the racks, the way you have it secured.

The rear strap is holding the board down, but it still can slide sideways.
If it slide far enough, it will fall off the rear rack and slip out of the front strap.

The back strap may seem tight enough, but if it slides forward, it will loosen up.

You can slip a strap under the rear roof rack, over the board, then under the rear roof rack on the other side..... cinch like a normal rack.

or.... drive slowly  :)

You know Creek, it doesn't look like Mr Proper has any roof racks on his Fiat... Just some pool noodles.. (Yikes).   Wonder if he still has his board?  I know I'm crazy anal about how careful I am with my boards on my car... If I wasn't, shit would happen... Yet other people I know don't seem to give a damn about it, and nothing ever happens...  >:(

Thanks for your tips.
I know, that this is not the best solution, but it works for the 2km to the harbor. And yes, I drive slowly.
But in the meantime I got a place for my board in a boathouse at the harbor and no longer need the car to transport the board.

For longer trips, it looks like this:

Nice Van Mr Proper!  I was just kidding about still having your JL,  we're all pretty considerate and concerned about all our fellow 'Zoners here... Nothing worse than hearing a brutha or sistah has lost a board unnecessarily...

Nice Van Mr Proper!

Thanks :-)
And the best is, that it has 4x4, limited slip differential and gear reduction.

Nothing worse than hearing a brutha or sistah has lost a board unnecessarily...

Yes, this would be a nightmare.

You ought to see how Jimmy carries boards, scares the crap out of me, and I'm careless. Drives like a lunatic too, and it takes one to know one.
