Title: Narrow!
Post by: RATbeachrider on September 01, 2015, 06:48:31 PM
According to my friend Amin, boards wider than 27 inches are waste of foam.  He's on a 9'4x23"x3.75" long board.

That's the exact same size as my long board. At 240# there is no way it will float me if I were trying to stand in the line-up. I'd have to prone paddle into it, then stand up with my paddle once I caught it. Your friend looks a little thinner than I am. If he paddles into it, then it looks like he has found his optimum performer.

I'm about to test this idea next month on a rented NSP longboard. The 10'ers are 25" wide and I'm gonna see if I can paddle one. Should make for some hilarious video at the worst. At best, I might find a 26" or so width could work for a noserider SUP.

I love this, this is the next step in the progression.

Skinny acrobats have more options.

Ain't that so true. I see the sexy shaped boards that a shaper makes for another weight class and then what I need to keep my 195lbs up!

'anything wider than 27" is a waste of foam'  might be a sensible comment coming from a guy who appears to be under 130 lbs.

Good for Amin but we're all different.  If we all rode the same boards it would be a boring sport.

I hope your friend was simply talking about himself. Blanket statements like that tend to piss me off. At 280 with bad balance I'm supposed be able to enjoy myself on a 27" or less board? If he's making generalized statements he's simply to be ignored....I don't care what he's capable of on a board. End of rant.

If he's talking about for himself....that's nice....happy for him.

Stone ... it was meant as a joke between he and I.  I'll edit the post.

Yeah....sorry....I was afraid I was taking it too seriously, I can be a dick that way. Definitely cool that folks can do it...shows what's possible. I have heard people go on about things like that, stating it as absolute fact, ignoring the fact that people are different and that are basically calling anyone a kook that feels different than they do. I have a hard time not saying STFU when I hear it.

It is nice for your friend, wish I could manage it.

Mostly just sour grapes and envy from me.  Seeing that kind of balance is great to behold.

I did manage to surf backwards on my Prowave a couple of times today.  I  surfed backwards on the wider Vernor, but I thought I couldn't do it on the Prowave because of the Prowave's narrow tail, but I can!  I want to do body spin (not board) 360's eventually, surf backwards than around again to surf forwards.

He has great balance.. I am at the point that anything less than 32" wide is a waste of time... I am of the Simmons train of thought.. You surf the rails..  It was hard for me to wrap my mind around it, at first, but once I went wide, I will never go narrow again... even on my prone boards....But to each their own..

others have mentioned this before, but i'll reiterate: height is just as much a factor regards need for width as is weight. if you're 5'5", it's going to be easier to balance and maneuver a 27" wide board, and you won't have enough leverage to do same on a 33" wide board. if you're 6'3", you have the leverage to maneuver a 33" wide and you can use that width for stability as well. obviously width isn't the ONLY factor, just like your height isn't the only factor.  and yes, blanket statements apply only to the author.

Never thought about height..  I am 5'10" and 235# so 33" works for me.   I have my friends who weigh much less than me try out my board and they love it.. I tried to stand on a 7'10" by 29" board and it was a clown show... For me, stability is worth everything as I have balance issues.  If I had started this when I was 20 yrs old and weighed 180lbs, now that would have been a different thing... That guys standing on a 23" wide board, now thats nuts and the same thing goes to young rippers out there these days, that are on boards that are close to prone boards...

Narrow boards for narrow surfers.  When the coach looks at you and says "Offensive Lineman?" ...well you know your dreams of being a jockey or gymnast are over.  ;D

There's a little gal (I don't know her name but see her all the time at San O with the infinity crew) who sups an Aipa 8' fun shape/mini mal board.  It's totally the right size for her and she rips it up.  It would be a crap shoot if I could even catch anything on it prone.

Variety is one of the best things about SUP Surfing.  So many different shapes are required to fit everyone, and then once proficient, you'll probably want a decent quiver for the different conditions.  Statements like "this board works great for everyone" get a few squints of suspicion after a while. That said, if Amin ever wants to sell that longboard...?

That longboard is  9'4"x 23"x 3.75" and he is def riding well . Maybe doable for me as a sup so I'd give it try. I never ride my longboards more than 9'0"x 22"x 2.75".  Looks fun. And Baja, you're lookin' STRONG on that Simmons!

Collin McPhillips was out on his custom 9'2 ×27 ×2-3/4 long board yesterday . He was ripping it up, nose riding and his famous carving cut backs. His board was wax only and 95% under water. Collin is maybe 160 pounds. I think any narrower and he'd be completely under water. He can definitely catch anything he wants, even with that sunk board.

A wider shorter board is more maneuverable than a longer narrower one so what's your point ?

TW is right. If you go narrower your going to end up with more length to compensate. So you have a less maneuverable long board. Collin is a long boarder. He nose rides almost every wave he's on when he's out just surfing for fun, so narrower makes sense for him.
