I've been looking up SUP technique and some recommendations are to angle the blade 90 degrees towards the board - http://www.sup-guide.com/sup-training/sup-paddle-technique-2/ while others recommend lifting it out of the water perpendicular from the board - http://www.supthemag.com/videos/sup-fundamentals-paddle-technique/ @ 2:30.
What do you prefer?

I push up with my lower hand and break my wrist inward to feather the blade. A lot depends on your blade design. With the dished face of the KeNalu blades that movement pops the blade out of the water. Flatter faces don't benefit as much from the feathering twist.

I flare the blade somewhere around my feet. My SUSing stroke is a little lazy on the recovery and I drop my top hand lower than I normally would. When I'm on my Javelin I tend to release/flare with more of an upward vertical motion to keep the shaft more vertical and recover more inline with the rail.
