Title: larger quad fins for tomo sup (fcs ii)
Post by: breakbad on March 16, 2015, 12:45:53 PM
Looking for suggestions to stiffen up ths ride for my 8x30 tomo custom. Usually mushy surf and beach break. Fcs ii system. Not sure to start large or medium. I'm 85kg. Definetly need to slow down the turns, and get more a little stability in chop.

Also not sure what exact fins I have currently,  will report back with measurements. Maybe someone can tell from pics in board review forum.

Thanks

I picked up a set of fcs compressor quads for my widetailed SUP. They are an improvement on the FCS II Al Merrick Larges I had on there. Pay attention because they are a funky template. The tabs are at the very rear of the fin, effectually moving the whole placement of you fins up half an inch, which may or may not work on your board.

Mind you that I'm about 100kg, so what works for me might be too stiff for you.

Try the MR twins in the back. Lots of drive and stability.

Thanks, both those look like good options.

FYI - current fins are the quad side carvers, 4.5" and 4".

Also found some sup labeled quads, one by Lopez, one by Naish. Here's the Lopez:

FCS also makes the Harold I. quad set which I have used in my King's 7'11". Felt halfway between the AM Large and the GL which are massive.

The rubber conversion shins enabling me to use previous generation FCS fins in the FCS II boxes worked perfectly!

You have a Center Box.
Try 2+1

As I found on my Tomo Vanguard, in quad setup wasn't much impressed...too slippery. went Thruster and it's a completely different board. But either way, without high foot pressure on tail of board, no fin setup really matters.

+1 beached. All the feedback on sea breeze from the guys on the square tomo boards
say exactly that. You have to have your back foot all the way back for them to work properly! 8) 8)

These? found these at a local shop. As a thruster setup. Ifthese won't work for tomo I may just order the compressors.

Thanks all.

I love the HI quads from FCS. I have two sets used in each of my surf SUPs.  Highly recommended.  Not FCS-2 though, so buy the conversion kit and get some screws.

I have the FCS Compressors and find them too stiff for my liking so they may be just what you are looking for.

I found the FCS Connector at a local store fin and bought the 8" version. Its the longboard fin that you don't need a screw for, pops in much like the FCS II system. A bit bigger than what I wanted but I think it made up for the flex of the cheaper flexible thrusters. My second day surfing the poles I caught some shore break coming in, buried the nose, and somehow caught a fin to my right quad muscle. Luckily the fin popped out and I only got a minor gash. So down a fin I went to the local shop and grabbed a Large set of the quad shapers series....'Stretch'. Was loving them in some chest to HH conditions the last day.

Breakbad,
I saw you out for the evening session on Wednesday.  What a great day of surf!!!
I was on the yellow  L41 S5. I have been playing around with fins too.  Tried as thruster with S8 Size fins, really stiffened it up, maybe too much unless it was pretty damn big.  Went back to Quads (controllers) with the nubster and I liike it.  The nub adds a touch of stability and control.  In small clean waves quad is a blanst!! Good luck and nice looking board!

Fun stuff!  Thanks for posting, you can see how the board carries speed and flows in the slower parts of the flats.  Thanks for posting!
