I was driving back from a downwind having just filmed a piece for the "Will it downwind?" series of Youtube vids where non-specific downwind boards are being tested on downwinds (See the Downwind and Racing Forum), when I saw this large piece of Polyfoam / Expanded Polystyrene / EPS on the shore..
So, it just had to be tested.. and a new series, "Will it SUP?" was born...

What have you found on (or off) the shore and paddled?
-
Schweet! Necessity is the mother of intervention. :D
-
Great stuff OS! I'm sure Larry Alison could come up with a fin that would make that block of foam come to life, could be a twin fin candidate due to the wide tail... ;D

Bean, After I paddled the Polyfoam, I dropped off my boards at our storage place, and went back to pick it up. I fully intended to saw off the two front corners to make a front, and to cut a slot for a piece of driftwood as a fin and also find a way to secure a leash. Then take it downwinding... But it had gone... very sad, as it would have been hilarious taking it for a downwind... Its unusual to find a piece that big, but if I do, that is what I'm going to do with it!

slightly unhinged.... but I like it ;D
I can see this thread going places.... and probably more that a few "JamieO" moments
My SUP buddy Jim O was testing "bergs" for SUPability yesterday.
He didn't have his paddle, but did a stability test.... plenty of float and good rail to rail.
Here's a screen grab from his FB video "surfing icebergs"

Looks eerily similar to the "Big Foote" sighting.
Have we found stoneaxe's doppelganger?? :o
-
It needs more rocker.

I wonder if the person who took it did so because they saw that it could be paddled?

Is it common to find small piece of polyfoam where you SUP? :o
-
Looked like a dock float. Great video, and another great idea.
-
I especially like the slow-motion and captions.
Just don't try to enter that block of foam in a race using SUPAA rules. The weight would most likely fall under the minimums for 12-6 and 14, so you'd have to race it as an unlimited to avoid unfairly exploiting your competitive advantage.

But the 12-6 and 14 footers would not be allowed to draft you, so you would have that going for you ;D

early tomo I think

Been thinking about this. It could be that the piece of PolyFoam was a tender for one of the boat moored in the bay. However I drive along this shore every time I go to paddle and had never seen it there. We do get a lot of debris and PolyFoam along along our shores but this is the biggest one I have seen in 24 years here.

Forget SUP - lose the paddle and find some waves.

That is pretty funny seeing Conor's cat like reactions...

Looks like me on the Prowave.

So I was paddling back from a session on Sunday, and saw this huge piece of wood on the shore.. Turned out it was the base of a wooden Dragon Boat.. about 35ft / 5m long and around 31" wide... So.. Will it SUP?

haha .... you are weirder than I am... I like it! ;D
-
Maybe try it again in deeper water.
;D
-
...and now the Fish Box....

I have no idea what these two floats were that I found in the treeline behind the beach, above the storm debris field. Perhaps they were stabilisers for a canoe, or part of some sort of catamaran craft, but lashed together with some electrical cable found on the beach, they made an interesting and challenging craft...a sort of standaram... but will it SUP?

Awesome! Keep em coming.
I am not sure I would like falling in that water, or is it cleaner than the debris field beyond it :o

Beasho.. Haha. Glad you like it.. The storm debris field is way up behind the beach, and whilst there are beach clean ups on a regular basis, these small little coves get overlooked. A few of us who SUP in the area are going to do a clean up of this one later this year. The water itself is quite clean, until we get a downpour and all this crap gets deposited in the sea, only to end up back on the beach later... Actually on this trip, I was looking for a fridge that I'd seen a while back... because I've always wanted to SUP a fridge.. ;D
-
Didn't find the Fridge. But did find a sofa / couch / settee. But will it SUP?
-
That looks like a pretty nice couch. I could have used it in college.
-
It had to be done... This abandoned couch has been sitting on the shoreline for some time..

Thanks to PM for helping getting the couch in and out of the water.

Needs a stomp
pad cushion.

It's been over 120 days (or so the warning when I posted this tells me) since I last posted a vid on the "Will it SUP?" thread, and my kids have been egging me on to find something new to paddle, and so whilst on the beach this weekend, a refrigerator / fridge was spotted... or at least the remains of one.
I reckon it was 225L, which is similar to a 12-6 x 28" x 5" race board.....but with higher rails, no rocker, and a sunken deck like the Starboard Ace.. but will it SUP?
You be the judge...

I hope Laird doesn't hear about this. It might catch on.
-
Great stuff OS!
-
Finally, someone has proved stability isn't all about volume!
8)
-
Looks like an unfinished Nash Raptor..
-
If you stabilize it with ice and a few cases of beer, the rails won't catch as much.
Next challenge: downwind it with a door and the handle closed.
-
You're gonna need a bigger.....refrigerator.
;D

Off-Shore you must have some really trashy beaches. I have never seen so much garbage and junk. The perfect testing grounds for the "Will it SUP" series.
-
Yep. Beer and Ice as ballast would have made it a lot more stable....
On the trash on the beaches, Hong Kong has around 40 public managed beaches. Most have shark nets and trash is collected and removed daily. There are probably 300 more beaches if you count all the ones of the surrounding islands that are not managed like this one and which are only accessible by boat or walking track. These rely on volunteers to clean up or are cleaned once or twice a year by the authorities. In the Summer most of prevailing winds are Southerly and this particular beach is south facing and collects an unusual amount of trash..

First thing I checked when I got back home. Had my last booster a year ago so all good. We kept all the kids well away as there were some nasty sharp rusty edges.
Looking at the footage when I got home that night and all that green water pouring over my hand I did have to think hard about whether or not I had washed them before the lunch we had later that day though... We had chicken drumsticks from a BBQ... I ate them with my hands.. I did go for a swim though beforehand so hopefully that did the trick..

Hahahaha! Badger!!! that video of Connor Baxter on the Starboard trade show hunk of foam looks like me learning to balance in chop. I thought I had that one move patented! I started SUP'ing in the end of July or actually early August because my terrible back wouldn't let me surf normal boards anymore. The only time I actually tweaked my back SUP'ing was doing that wiggle. After that I said "To heck with it, just fall if I'm that far over!" Hahaha! Thanks for the yuks.
