Last weekend I ordered a Jammer from Warren at Sup Sports. I have never bought anything from him before, never met him, never tried any of his boards, but my spydee sense is telling me that his Jammer shape is what I'm looking for in a very short board. After exchanging numerous emails about design ideas, we came up with this configuration. I know Warren knows his stuff. He assures me that this board will be very loose, have drive and will slash effectively on waves. It will be about 10 more liters than I am currently riding and be almost 2 inches wider. So I know I will lose some speed over my 7'3 Hokua, but hopefully gain some wave catching ability. The tail was initially wider than I had planned on, but drastically stepped rails on the tail are supposed to make it turn like a narrower tail. I think this Jammer is going to be a perfect balance and I'm hoping it will turn out to be exactly what I'm looking for. Anyone have any input?

You are going for it! I've had my custom carbon Hammer for just over a year now. I am extremely happy with the Hammer and can say that this board is helping me take my surfing to another level. OK, that said, now let's set some context:
59 y.o. 228 lbs, questionable balance, limited experience - My long board is 12'. My in-between board is 11' 2". My 10' 3" x 33" Hammer is my SHORT BOARD.
So when I say 'another level', that means I'm not cruising into them early, depending on the glide so much as catching them a bit steeper, getting into position and then a few quick paddles to help me into the momentum of the wave. Starting at a slight angle vs. straight on, or if it catches me straight, turning slightly right away to avoid the dreaded pearl. Then lining out and turning shoreward, weaving up and down and back and forth as opportunity, momentum, and what's left of my balance might allow. Radical kickouts are just a dream...
To sum it up, I am super stoked. Someday I'll get on a board like yours - In the meantime I'm taking lessons from the Hammer. Let us know how it goes... pretty sure you are going to enjoy it.

Can't really see the stepped rails in the drawing,
but I'm sure they'll show in the pictures.
Looking forward to your review when you get it.

Wardog should patent the "plumber's ass" tail configuration. They look like really cool boards. Still hope to try a Hammer someday.

What's the difference between a Hammer and a Jammer. (And don't say a J and an H)

LOL, good one. Here's the design template we used for the tail:

Aren't you afraid your board will crack up?

Zoo is going to be riding Ass

I am probably going to really shred on this board because my wife says I'm really good at making an ass out of myself.

Mike will definitely get all the bells & whistles of the design...working really well yesterday...Al didn't want to give it back...no worries as i was having loads o' fun on the 7'8" Mallet...

The stepped rail drawings look sort of like a narrow tail hidden within a wide tail. Will this be the world's first "have your cake and eat it too" board? OK, Wardog, those surfing pics are killing me. Is the Jammer ready yet? :)
-
Wardog just sent me this pic of the work in progress. The Jammer is done with the rough shaping. Woah, those are some massively stepped rails. ETA for the finished product is about 3 weeks.

Looks good. Can't wait to hear your ride report zoo.
I have an WD 8'6" WD and was looking at the Mallet, Hammer and Jammer. Still can't figure out which of those shapes would work best in waist to chest high point break?
What made you choose the Jammer over those other two models?

Cool, how do you like the WD? I may have this wrong but I think the Mallet is Wardog's answer to the Simmons style movement. The Hammer is his great all around board. The Jammer is his higher performance board. So I ordered a Jammer and had it dialed to my specs, and WD assured me that it would be very loose and high performance. I am hoping to have a board that performs almost as well as my 7'3 Naish Hokua, but be a little better at catching waves. Just a touch more stability too. Love my Hokua, but getting tired of missing so many waves.
-
Very tempting offering Mike.
Having riden a number of Wardog's shapes, it still amazes me how much a little volume or adjustment makes in the world of stand up, even on the same model of board. He's able to take the info you give him and dial you in pretty damn close to what you're after, and he offers enough variety to cater to a lot of different tastes.
I'd definitely put the Jammer near top of the short list of next purchases (along with a stoke extra wide and a big soft top hammer for family & dog use).
-

Yeah, that's why I'm going to the trouble of ordering from someone who is over 2 hours north of me, and not just using local guys. Warren's shape is already pretty close to what I have been seeing in my mind's eye for a long time, and he has already worked the bugs out. A few tweaks and it is almost exactly what I have been designing in my brain. Will it work? Dunno.
You can always try my Jammer if the chance ever arises.

My 119 Kgs may have other plans for that 111 Liter board. It will be enough to see you enjoy it. :D

They will all work great in those conditions...really a matter of your surf style...we have heaps of pics and vids on the site and on our Zone page...

Mike's new 7'4" Jammer is getting sealed and then it's ready for lamination...gonna be a cool little rocket ship...

Wardog, I have two or three friends that are expressing concern that this shape will be stiff with the wide tail. They are also saying that it will not have drive. Would you set their minds at ease for me?

Mike,
There will always be people who aren't enthusiastic about someone else's new board. You ordered this board for YOU and not them. It'll ride how it'll ride. It won't be a perfect board as that just doesn't exist. Will it be a great board for you in the conditions it was designed for? Most likely. Part of the fun of a new board is designing it and the anticipation waiting for it to be done and then riding it for the first time. If you love it, great. If you don't, just get a new one and start over again with the process. I like to have a new board in the design\building process at all times. It's fun for me.

No worries...most people cannot seem to wrap their heads around the Jammer being really two twin fin short boards side by side...the board is usually on one rail or the other...but, some really good surfers...and, a few smart designer/shapers totally get it right off the bat without me having to 'splain it...;-)
The 7'10" in the attached pics is bigger and wider than your 7'4"...
I have no problem generating speed and drive, while still keeping it loose, front side or backside, at a spot like Jalama...
I generally only ride it as a quad with my SUPerflex 5"/4" combo and my 2.25" StubNub...

Thanks, Tom. I agree with the fun aspect of the development of shape ideas. You and I discussed this shape several months ago and it's cool to see it come to fruition. I was excited to see that Warren was already making a board that was extremely close to something I have been thinking about for awhile.
I might get back into shaping as a hobby one of these days. As you well know, it's a good feeling to ride something you made.

I haven't tried a Jammer (yet), but my favorite surfboard was a wide-tailed McCoy Nugget. I did not find that board to be stiff and it had plenty of drive for me. Proper fins, rails, bottom shape, outline, etc can keep 'em loose and fun. Don't fear them fat bottomed girls!

Custom board ... custom airbrush, designs, deck pad, etc., Zoo?

No, actually plain Jane here. I'm saving as much money as I can, since this is my second board already in 2015. I'm using the deck pad that Ralph got for me, which has a lot of graphics already on it. Other than that, just plain blue, no graphics. SUP Sports logo because that's free!
-
Oops. Wrong button.

My favorite board is also McCoy. The wide tail really works and this Jammer looks like it rocks.. My wide tailed, wide point behind center McCoys, had drive, turned on a dime and loved the pocket and steep part of the face. I always thought a quad was the perfect set up for the wide round tail.. If anyone with a Jammer comes down to Cabo, I sure would like to give the board a try... I got a feeling it that the Jammer would be a lot of fun in good surf...

My parents have a timeshare at Casa Dorada in Cabo. Right by "The Office." My wife and I usually mooch in with it and go down there every year or so. I'll look you up the next time we go and maybe bring the Jammer.
-
That sounds great Zoo... I really want to surf the board... I had a ton of spots that I surf alone, especially in the spring n summer.. My lonely winter spots on the Pacific have a major thump factor, but I love em...Cerritos, La Pastora and San Pedrito, are starting to get crowds, so I dont surf there as often, and head to other less known spots. Would love to show you around sometime.

Cheyne's 5'8" big butted Lazor Zap, that he rode at 20' Waimea 30 years ago, pretty much shattered the surfboard design dogma of the time and created a new paradigm...

Wow, now I see. I was thinking that the Jammer reminded me of the "no nose" board designs of the 80's. People like Danny Kwok used to absolutely shred on those around around my house, at about 54th St. Maybe I'm just old and crabby, but I think modern surfboard designs have nothing on those.
-
Zoo's 7'4" Jammer is now officially blue...
-
That has no glass on it yet, right? Just sealer and color?
-
Aloha Mike...correctomundo...no worries...we've built 1000's of boards...not our first rodeo...;-)
Updated lamination pics will come soon...;-)
-
Oh, sure, not worried at all; I know you know your stuff. Just curious. 25 years ago when I made surfboards in my garage as a hobby, I just put pigment into the glass to get color. So I'm curious about the modern way of doing these sorts of things.
Funny thing about it, in about 1988, I made a no-nose, 5'11 that was almost the same shape as that Jammer. And, it was the same color of blue.
-
So Mike, would you say that shade is your signature color? We all have our favorites, and that's a very nice hue for sure.
I'm pretty jealous (in a good way).
-
Yeah I must really like blue. I'm putting a yellow, white and black deck pad on it. So it's either going to look flashy and cool or it's going to look like a mess of mismatching colors. Either way Ralph got me the deck pad for free so I'm using it
-
Aloha Jim...
That's pretty much our stock blue that we call "electric blue"...then we take it up a notch for "Maui Blue"...
Eye popping abstract blue Hammer below is on it's way to South Carolina...

Sweet looking boards!
Wardog, what fin sizes do you recommend for the Jammer you are making me? I have a number of various sized sets of FCS, quad fins in my garage and I plan to experiment. But I would like to start with a configuration that you recommend.
-
Wow, those are sharp looking.
Wardog, what fin sizes do you recommend for the Jammer you are making me? I have 6 or 7 various sized sets of FCS, quad fins in my garage and I plan to experiment. But I would like to start with a configuration that you recommend.
Aloha Zoo,
Thanks...we're really stoked with the quality and performance...
I haven't been on a surf SUP yet that didn't benefit from my WD bamboo Coreflex fins...5" in front and 4" in the rear...for a bit more drive and no apparent increase in drag we run the 2.25" or 3.19" Stubnubs in the center all the way back...these fins are fast and loose...yet, positive...
http://supsports.com/sup-fins/
I see most guys using too much fin on their standups...too big and too stiff...remember, the paddle is the biggest fin on your board...;-)
I understand you wanting to use existing fins...I'd have to see whatcha got...but, smaller and flexier would be my call...
Tell you what...let me fin it up with my FCS version...if you like them, then you can pay me...if not, then send them back...no worries...
Bring that pad up...I personally think the colors will clash...and, would save it for another board...but, we will put it on for you...
We've padded 1000's of boards in our shop...it's a quick job...no big dealio...
-
Thanks, Wardog. I'm pushing the finances to the limit even buying this board so soon. So I have to use what I have on hand until I can afford more. Fortunately, fins and deck pads can be removed and replaced when the funds are available.
However, I would love to have your help installing the deck pad. Thanks so much, that would be greatly appreciated

Yeah, exactly. I'm hoping that Wardog and Ralph are patient with this poor teacher who has an expensive board habit. Joking aside, I am worried that I am going to tic both of them off. It's not my intention. My apologies to both.

I like the looks of that fin setup. I've been looking for an alternate setup on my 8-0 Vec.

Maui blue, Maui blue, I've heard that before, and I love that color.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Maui blue came from Fender Guitars, I think you can get a Strat in Maui blue, but I'm sure there is no patent on that color. It would be cool to have a board in Maui blue with Stratocaster painted on it somewhere.
Hea, you could be like Orange County Choppers, and make boards with specific graphics and design to certain companies or corps!!!! $$$$
Or that could be too Kardashian'ish, never mind,,,,,,,,,, maybe.

Funny that. I play a blue Stratocaster all of the time. It's actually what Fender calls "Lazar Blue." Hmm, maybe there is a pattern there.

Wardog, how many layers of cloth will go on the Jammers?

Enuf...it will be done soon, grasshopper...;-)

Like I said before, I'm just curious about the construction process. Having made boards in the past myself, those kinds of questions keep coming to mind. I'm interested in the coloring process, the layup process and the gloss coat process.
No worries; I know it will be great and it is already getting done more quickly than I originally expected.

Agree that Yngwie shreds, but he is a little too over-the-top for my tastes. I prefer the playing of Guthrie Govan and his band The Aristocrats. This guy shreds too, but his playing is a little more cerebral, IMO. (Hey look, I'm hijacking my own thread!)

I'll be at Wardog's at 10 (family shopping...er demo...er research). Hope to see you there Mike, too bad you can't just demo a few of the other offerings and go for a paddle with the Slatch crew. That board looks...well, it looks like I'll have to demo one some day, that's what. ;)

Awesome! That would be great to have your gang show up, Jim. If I didn't have to meet my old friend in Fillmore at noon, I would rent a board from Wardog and join you. You should try one of his Jammers, we can compare notes at T6 next Saturday. You can also try mine, if you don't think it's too small.

Thanks, Wardog. Looks awesome. That yellow pinstripe will tie in the yellow deck pad we will put on it tomorrow. Didn't expect the satin finish, but I like it. Credit card OK for the balance?

What r the specs on that badboy?

Yes, took it for an inaugural session this morning in blown out, waist high, garbage surf. We had a 2-8 mph south wind all night that really messed it up this morning. From what I could tell in the terrible conditions, the board is really nice. I'm going to surf it a couple more times and then write a review thread on it. So far so good.
It's 7'4" X 30" 115 liters. Wardog's design adjusted to fit the dimensions that I have been thinking about for several months. I think I'm really going to like this one.
Thanks for asking, Bob. See you on Saturday, hopefully.

Damn Mike ... looks like a ripper! Ride and report!

Thanks, Ben. Another session this morning in lumpy, walled, garbage surf. Isn't it Murphy's Law when conditions go to pot the day you get a new board? The board seems pretty nice, but really hard to tell. It seems pretty loose so far.

In my experience a new board that is decent in terrible conditions will be a great board in good conditions. I have something similar in my quiver and it's a great board. You just need to be moving the back foot around a lot

Missed you Mike, we ended going straight up the coast since my daughter postponed for a day. We went out north of UCSB, with calm waters, tiny waves, and caught a zillion of them. Sunday was pretty blown out but we found out that the new boyfriend has great balance and his surf experience helped him catch half a dozen wind waves. Won't be long before wardog has another sale up there.
Can't wait to see you on the new jammer. Great color combo.

Thanks, Jim. Glad you had a good time with the fam. Boyfriend SUPs? Uh oh, dad likes him, might be a keeper. :)

Hmm, did I miss something, or is that the Naish deck pad on the Jammer?

Looks like you took a snooze through some of the earlier pages in this thread ;)
-
Well, it is seven pages long. When you get past a certain age, you're lucky if you remember what you had for breakfast.

Yeah, I already had the pad and putting it on saved me a fair amount of money. It turned out looking OK on that board. Wardog was very cool to help me put it on and not give me any flak. I've become a fan.

I've been out 4 times on my new Jammer so far and not ridden one decent wave on it. 3 different spots and not one good ride. Knee high walls everywhere; take off, close out, no shoulder. So I have not had a chance yet to really see how the board surfs.
I can say it paddles pretty stable and catches waves easily enough, considering it's small size. Oh well, conditions should be better on Friday and the weekend. Gonna try it at Trails on Saturday.

It looks like a peach, bet it surfs great.

Thanks, Carl. So far, so good.
Newport finally had ridable waves this morning and I caught a bunch on the Jammer. So far, it seems to be exactly what I have been looking for. Gonna ride it a few more times and then write up a review.
