Title: Two icons
Post by: headmount on January 31, 2015, 07:05:17 PM
Everyone knows who these two are but it's fantastic to see them together in the same pic.  Pretty much the instigators of everything we do in the water.  Duke was the first to break the one minute 100m swim in 1911.

Check out this site http://files.legendarysurfers.com/surf/legends/ls07_blake.shtml to see everything Blake did for surfing.  It's awesome.  It's easy to do stuff after someone has done it first and these guys did.

That's the picture in the magazine I found in my father-in-laws stuff. There's also another of all the Waikiki beach boys.

I would guess that it's a steering blade for a canoe

Legends for sure...just read the article on Tom Blake from above.   I didn't know he was the first to use fins, and the amazing thing was the article said it took ten years after Tom invented fins for them to be widely used by other surfers.  Astounding.

That's a steersman paddle.

Legends...
I never tire of seeing their images or hearing/reading about them...definitely brought what we call the "surfing lifestyle" to the mainstream...

I would credit Hobie with 'what we call the "surfing lifestyle" to the mainstream...

The big break point that Hobie initiated was starting a "surf shop", that and making a board light enough, with the help of Grubby, that a kid could carry.  (in my 12 yr case, a double carry with my pal) Only monolithic muscle guys could lift those wood boards.  Even the first foam boards were still heavy by todays standards.  The guys that young kids in the early 60's saw surfing were still built like those two icons.  As boards got lighter surfers got skinnier and more agile with their boards.
