A long time coming...
I"ve seen several versions of a hybrid 17' and then in 2014 I noticed this sitting under the trees @ Kanaha during the 2014 Olukai. These are early pics of a protype 17' V3. Team rider Scott Trudon used this board during the event and since 5/14 there have been several versions built and tested. I know there are some paddlers already riding custom EPS hand shaped (narrow v2) boards. But from what I'm told, the prototyping is almost completed.
These pictures are from Olukai

Two weeks ago I was at the SIC factory and Mark had just returned from testing another prototype. It was a green 17' Bullet. Very little rocker, wave piercing nose and narrow. Mark indicated this was designed for winning channel crossings, not just making them. Beautiful board and if he has been prototyping since before the Olukai, I suspect he would be close.
Can't believe that there would be that large of a market for such a specific purpose board. But the RnD they are doing will surely make a difference in what we ride in the future.

Very interesting. But what do you mean by "wave piercing nose", exactly? Thanks.

I'm guessing 'wave piercing' (pointy) as apposed to the Fanatic and DC/NSP style 'boof' (blunt) nose..

The nose looked similar to the current Bullet, but with limited rocker and the tip shape was more squared off, without any rounded bottom. The design allows for the board to go straight through a wave and not steer one way or the other as it surfaces. My old F16 V1, would always steer one way or the other as it popped up out of a wave. My V3 is much more predictable in that way. This looks like you would want to just plow through the back of every wave.

oh but there is
most of you who are not familiar with SIC's unlimited line up... these are more downwind specific boards, and the term "wave piercing" is probably the wrong word to use as most people would associate that with displacement hulls which this is not.

There's enough of a market to keep the crew at S.I.C. Maui busy, and the waiting list for any of the molded hollow boards is always several months. If you want to be competitive in a channel race, you really only have one place to go.
