Title: Patagonia Kiting Drysuit
Post by: feet on October 26, 2014, 05:23:00 AM
Has a neoprene neck gasket, which sounds a hell of a lot better than the latex neck common on other dry suits.  $699 seems like a decent price for a goretex suit.  Anyone have any experience with this? I'm thinking this will help me get through winter flat water paddling.

For winter flatwater my O'Neill boost did the trick. Much cheaper than the Patagonia if you are a low budget dude like me!

Feet,  Unless you're doing ocean paddling or expect to loose your board a DRY seems overkill to me.  I bought one once to extend my kiting season but hated the clammy feeling and nasty seals.  I also found a smoothie a lot better when fully exposed to wind ..as you are standing. Especially when you tune them with a waterproofer - proverbial duck's back.

I got two 100% smoothies* from these folks (me frugal also Big) http://www.xterrawetsuits.com/store/index.php/products/wetsuit-clearance-sale to go along with a couple really comfy, conventional MATUSE suits.  Smoothie is fussy in that you need to wear gloves putting it on/off so your nails don't dig holes but you almost never feel the evaporative cooling effects like with Lycra/neoprene. (..after you once get wet of course)

Jim

*triathlon suits are a little weird in that the legs are 5mm but the tops are like ..2mm.  I cut one into a Spring suit.

Looks very basic. While the price is good, I'd be concerned about fit and how easy it is to get on and off. Drysuits that bag to much or that bind in the joints are a huge pain. Binding is not just a loose enough fit issue, if the suit bags and collects around your ankles, when you try to bend your knees the friction of the suit can stop you. You may find you have to hitch the suit up to bend in it--major PIA.

I've never used a rear zip suit. Front zipper can be challenging because you often don't have room to get both arms in without some wiggling, but you can get the zipper fully closed. a rear zip would worry my--even if a friend checked it I couldn't see if it's closed. Having your suit fill is a major bitch. It won't drag you down like some critics claim, but it can be very hard to get out of the water with a hundred extra pounds in your legs, and then getting the suit off will teach you some new words.

I'd look at the Ocean rodeo stuff if you're serious about a drysuit. Patagonia stuff is excellent, but sometimes I think they make everything for living on a glacier. I have a Patagonia wetsuit I've worn twice in frigid water and terrible weather. Both times I thought I was going to explode into steam.

I know this post is a few months old but, I've been thinking about getting a Boost for early morning flat water paddling.  What do you use for boots and gloves?

The Supskin suits are really nice. Dan Gavere reps them and I bet you can get one from him for a good price.

For flat water these Kokatat are nice because they have a neoprene neck closure that is super comfortable, maybe not as 1000% water tight as a latex gasket but still very adequate for flat water. also with the built in bootie/socks you can wear a good quality water shoe and have support along with water tight feet. Get the shoes a little on the big side. You can regulate your temperature with the front entry zipper.  They also breath very well.

Also check out the Ocean Rodeo Heat. It's a more affordable version of the Soul which I wear. Same material just less features. Very lightweight and comfortable. Excellent breathability.

I found a twice used kokatat goretex front entry dry suit on craigslist in December and bought it.  $320 shipped from a guy in FL that planned on using it for kiting but didnt.  The latex neck gaskets are as uncomfortable as I remember them, but it is what it is.  I prefer this to a wetsuit any day.  Now if I could only find the time, in between work and grad school, to get on the water...

It's surprising to me that people say latex seals are uncomfortable. I don't even notice them on my Soul drysuit. I did have to trim mine down a little to make them fit properly. Once I did that they were perfect.

I have a Stohlquist breathable suit I use on my trimaran, and flatwater SUP.  I love it. Easily used 30-40 times a year.

Also been using it for Snowblowing this winter with the fleece underneath, comfy.

So, I picked up an O'Neill Boost.  Real simple design, easier to get in an out than my wet-suit, back zip is not as tricky as I thought it might be.  I'm glad the neck seal is neoprene because I need to stretch it just a bit to fit comfortably.  I have a can of oats nesting in the seal for the morning.
