Earlier stuff was great, later stuff was a bit opaque or boring.  Sounds like the bottle took him albeit a little later than most rockers.

Eric Clapton was hooked on smack in the Cream years, and after. Lot of musicians from the 60's and 70's who were big into drugs are now coming down with Hepatitis C, which destroys the liver. Lou Reed also died recently from "liver disease". Very unfortunate.
