Curious where you all store your keys on-water? That is if you're not taking them with you. Thanks.

I've used this for the last 5 years.
Works great, I just lock it to the grill of my car.

I tie a key to a shoelace and carry it around my neck under my suit.

For exercising, I just take along one of the Aquapacs with phone, a credit card, ID and car key in it. This gets tied to the d-rings up front.

I've got a spare key I put on a long, heavy shoelace
that I slipknot onto a loop that I sewed into a pocket in my SUP trunks.

I hide the spare on the car somewhere, wheel well, bumper something like that.

My truck key is on a lanyard with a barrel clasp. I wear it like a necklace. Funny story.....a guy had just had the symbolism of the hei matau that we give to the CCBC paddlers explained to him. When he was introduced to me he saw mine and the key and asked what the key meant...... :o ::) ;D

i have one of the new remote keys on my car (so the car senses it is near and doors unlock just by pressing a button and car starts just by pressing a button)
yeah thats great- but if you hide the keys within 5 feet of the car- someone can just walk up touch the door and unlock the car.
so i just bury them somewhere between the parking lot and the break- at least 30 feet from the car- I have generally been able to remember their location.........

The Surf Lock (http://thesurflock.com/) has been a great solution for me, since I don't want to carry the key fob on me and get it wet, and I'm paranoid about leaving it hidden under the car. The only problem I've had with it was when I squeezed every last drop of daylight out of an evening session and couldn't make out the numbers on the dial in the dark. ;D Fortunately another surfer parked nearby that night was able to shine light from his cellphone on it to help me out. Now I just stash a mini-flashlight under the car if I expect to be surfing until dark.

thanks for the great ideas! liking the lock thing the best. mine's stashed in a super simple place. funny, my students want to put their keys and valuable in my car.

Another vote for surf lock. Holds big keys.

My f150 has one of those keypads so I leave the keys locked inside but I worry that someone could break in and steal the whole truck.

Warning: At least in our area people was the beach goers "hide" their key on a tire etc. Then, they get the key, steal stuff out of the vehicle. The vehicle wasn't broken into, just unlocked, with the key.
A hitchsafe is what I use.

i also have a car with a proximity sensor key fob. however, there's a button on it that releases a key. if you lock the door with the key, the proximity sensor is disabled. so i leave the fob in the glove box and put the key on the loop in my board shorts' pocket.
i even called the car's manufacturer because i didn't believe the person who told me.

I bought one of those surf locks but my key is so huge due to the built in remote it doesn't fit. So my keys get locked in the truck and the spare is double bagged and then in a waterproof container in my PFD. Not ideal but it's worked so far.

At first I used this video clip as advice on where to stash something valuable and small:

It kept things tight and I was getting lots of admiring looks from the ladies, but I was getting butt tired keeping it in position.
Now I just take a more practical approach and clip it to a small carabiner which is clipped onto a built-in loop in the pocket of my board shorts. Sometimes I use a magnetic key box instead, but I think a better answer for me will be to use a hitch lock or one of the combination key holder locks already discussed that attaches to a point on the car such as the hitch or grill.

I had a no-chip-dummy key made. Won't start the car, but can get wet and opens the door. I only buy board shorts with secure closing pocket and a key loop. Take the dummy with me and stash the real key.... in the vehicle.
Mostly I cheat big time. I belong to a beach club and put my stuff in a locker. Probably go there 4 times in 5. There is a lot to be said for a hot shower and cold draft after a session.

I Stick my key in a small Aquapac, put the cord over my head then drop the pack down the inside of my rash-vest between/below my shoulder blades, then pull my wetsuit over. You soon don't notice it's there and so little water gets down there, they stay really dry. Really important for keys with electronics inside!
Done this for years, works a treat.

In maui, a string around my neck. In HR, my truck is a Ford F350 with keyless entry. I lock the keys in the car.
The key spot no one uses is the one that most people don't realize they have--leashes have a key pocket. Almost all of them. That little piece of backwards velcro on your leash is the key pocket.

I always wear a hydration pack, so they go in a tiny drybag in a pack pocket. Keyless entry allows me to keep them there when loading and unloading and driving.

Oh most people realize they have it....the only reason they don't use it, is that keys don't come curved to fit comfortable around the ankle while they're in it. One and done was all I needed to know that that wasn't going to be going on again. :o

Note: Used to hang it on the tow bar receiver, up until the night that I got out of the water at Doho late, and not being parked near a light post...having the dang thing hanging below the van, made it too dark to see the numbers on the SOB. Had to wait to flag down someone coming out to their car, to borrow their headlights to get my friggin key.
At least on the door handle, there is usually enough ambient light to see just enough to get it opened, after half a dozen tries or more.....that was until I figured out that when I lock it, I turn the four dials in a certain pattern, that when I come back, I can feel the little "clicks" in the dial, reverse the pattern count, and open it up....even with one eye closed if need be. ;) :)

Like BTS .. just get a 'door open only' key and keep it in your baggies/wetsuit .. lock the active one inside the truck. I also keep another 'open only' attached to the gas cap with velcro in case the ladies chasing me down the beach (in my dreams) get my baggies.

I have one of these too, though I almost never use it because the guy heading the group I go out with offers to store everyone's keys/phones in his vehicle. The lock is solid but "fits five keys" is somewhat of a lie. It can probably fit 5 keys but if like most human beings the top of your car key is molded and comes with an alarm fob and you've attached two pounds of other crap (loyalty cards, charms, etc) it's not squeezing in there. As I learned from my group leader, it's best to detach just the fob and place that inside.

This is my most favorite movie 'speech' ever. Most screenwriters never put down that much uninterrupted dialogue so this was a brave departure but turned out fantastic.

I keep mine in a small dry bag, with my phone, that goes around my waist. I'm not suggesting that you try it, but I can vouch for the fact that electronic keys can take a lot of water and still work; I wakesurfed all day with my 2014 Ford key in my boardshorts pocket and it still works and I dropped my previous Chevy key in the snow, ran it through the snowblower, couldn't find it until the snow thawed 2 weeks later and it still worked.

I use a trailer hitch combo lock. I got tired of taking the key off the remote key chain link to put in the leash key pocket. I now keep my spare truck key and remote in the hitch lock. Never have to worry about locking myself out of the truck anymore either now.

when I'm feeling really, really lazy, I'll take my valet key that I keep in the car all the time and leave it in the groove of the rack rail on the vehicle rook. The key pretty much hides there and although it IS risky, I leave it there sometimes.
The rest of the time I put the key in the key pocket in my wetsuit. My SUPreme wetsuit rocks and I love it, but no key pocket. Take notes, dudes!

I bought a Realtor combo lock box and hang it from my hitch or frame, depending on what car a take. You can get them used on ebay for about $25.

I've seen her, but I never thought to ask her to hold my car key. That's really cool of her...
I carry a door-only key in my trunks, use the leash pocket, or as I usually carry a dry bag with my phone in it to track workouts, I could always toss it in there. Another helpful backup is to strap another key someplace under your car with a cable tie. Might save you in a pinch.

I've used the leash key pocket in a pinch, I've never noticed it being uncomfortable. It's probably more comfortable in a calf leash, which I tend to prefer. Of course the big problem is that if you lose your board because your leash pulled off, you might not be able to get home once you make the beach.
The combination door lock is such a great feature, I'm surprised more manufacturers don't do it. It's kind of ugly, but it's very handy. My spare key is always in the truck. Rod Parmenter called me and offered to shuttle my truck back from the Viento parking lot for yesterday's race, but Greg and I were already on the way. He caught a lift with someone else and shuttled my truck back for me. Very nice of him, and he remembers the combination better than I do.
We've been shuttling together for a long time.

i just leave the key in the ignition its to easy no one thinks i'd b carzy enough to leave it there. jk..
i just swallow a spare key the night b4 i go out.. then I just have to time it right when i leave the beach :)
and if that dont work i keep one in my boardshorts tied to the loop...

I'm usually walking from home, so just have my plain, non-electronic house key in my pfd pocket. At races, I'll hide my car key in a hollowed-out lime. They have small limes specially made for hiding keys. If I'm surfing in Canada, I just leave it on the table in the food court next to Extreme Pita.

I used to take my key with me in a zippered pocket. I always buy shorts with zippered pockets. Until there was a hole in my pocket....
I tried one of those combination lock boxes on my rear fender. Except I found out my eyes are so bad I couldn't read the numbers. Now I have an F150 with the combination locks on the door. I just leave the key in the car.

No one here just "hides" them on/under the car? Everyone I know does that.

Actually I just staple mine to my balls. No one thinks to look there.

I'd try your method but staples can't penetrate brass.
